The strike in C dumiiia is unfortu
nate and is the more Hr be regretted
because it appears to the outside
public that it might easily have been
avoided. It is a mistake on the part
of the mill* to deny their operatives
the privilege of beloaging to labor or
ganizations So long as they do their
work acceptably at stipulated wages,
they ought to be permitted to belong
to whatever organizations they please.
When it comes to rights, of course
the mills have the right to say who
shall and who shall not work in
them. They have the right to close
down, to dismantle, 10 make kindling
wood of their machinery, to do any
thing they please with their own
property; but they should r«*member
that other people have rights
too, and that it is only by harinoniz
ing conflicting rights that progress j
can be mad** and peace maintained.
