Their Coming to Gaffney Resulted In the
Reclgnatlon of Doth.
The great day baa eome and gone,
and UafTney is the beet advertised
town for its size in the State. More
was acconaplisbed here in one day
than has ever been accomplished by
Any other town in the world—two
United States Senators have resigned
—and thue those who are opposed to
McLanrin and Tillman can rejoice in
the fact that we shall have neither
of them as Senators for a short while.
For our part we regret the turn af*
fairs have taken, for it means an
effort to widen the political bretcb
in this State that was fast ciosiog.
It means a campaign of prejudice,
vituperation and abuse, at the end of
which the people will be divided. It
was a bad piece of business and
neither Senator Is to be commended
for it.
About six hundred people attended
the McLaurio-Tillman meeting here
today. Senator McLaurin opened
with a fifty minute speech, in which
he laid down the thread of bis argu-
iterating his position as
tte and Greenville.
^ 1 /A Good Haul.
Ne«M&feacbed us Saturday of one
of the^argest, if rot the largest,
catches oU fish that was ever made
by a sing^'haul” in this part of the
country.
On Thursday morning last Jube
Jenkins, Joe Hains, Alex Smith, J.
M. Reynolds, Marion Phillips, Buren
Clary, Claude Harris and J. B. Smith,
all sturdy Cherokeeans who live in
the lower part of the county, went
seining in Broad river near Cherokee
Ford and caught by actual count 544
fish at one draw of the net. This
would have been good work for an all
day seining. but for one haul it was
Simply wonderful. Oar report of the
catch came from good authority and
we are sure the statement was true.
A few days ago a .friend at £tta
Jane sent us some scales that were
taken from a large fish killed near
that place one day last week by Mr.
J. L. Blackwell. The heavy rains
had cauted the water to back out into
the bottoms of Fowler Brothers, on
Broad river, and it was in this “back
water” the fish was found by Mr.
Blackwell, who killed It with a shot
gun. It proved to be a Leather
Carp and weighed 13 ponnds.
