Thursday the exerciaea of
Limeatono College were auapended
until ten days before the opening of
the next regular sesalon. The stu
dents began to leave on Friday, and
they have been going every day since
until yesterday, whan the last party
of some eight or ten attended by two
of the most faithful and elTicient
teachers in the college, Misses Werts
and Pitcher, left for their homes.
The causes that led to this step on
the part of the college authorities re
quire to be explained. About a month
ago some cases of slight sickness oc
curred among the students which
were pronounced to be of a bilious
type and incident to the change of
season. These cases usually recovered
in a few days and were not sufficiently
severe to excite any uneasiness, the
attending physician failing to dis
cover any symptoms that indicated
typhoid or any other disease of a
serious nature. Later, however,
there were three or four cases In suc
cession which began in the usual way
and failed to run theif course in the
usual time, exhibiting finally some
of the symptoms of typhoid fever,
only one of them, however, developing
these symptoms while at the college.
In the meantime greatly exaggerated
reports had spread over the country
and had of coune excited undue agi
tation among the patrons and friends
of the college who soon imparted
tbdir own perturbation to a small por
tion of the student body.
The work of instruction had teen
completed for the session, and there
was nothing before the college but
the final examinations which were
expected to occupy the last two
weeks of the session. As the stand
ard had been raised two full years
there were no graduates, and a com
mencement was by no means a neces
sity, while the classes were being
fllightly disturbed by the withdrawal
of members in obedience to orders
from parents at a distance who had
not the opportunity to acquaint
themselves with the true situation.
Under these circumstances Dr.
Lodge, after consultation with Capt.
Montgomery and as many of the
trustees as were accessible, deter
mined to avoid all possible risk to the
health of the large number of stu
dents who remained, by suspending
the examinations until the time
above stated.
There have been in all only about
four cases that assumed anything
like * typhoid type, and these, so far
as we are informed, are all convalesc
ing. When it is remembered that
the college has had about one hun
dred and fifty students, this propor
tion will not strike sensible people as
assuming the character and dimen
sions of a disaster. If the college
had been provided with an infirmary,
as it will be before another session,
this sickness would have attracted no
unusual attention.
The session has been the grandest
one in the history of the college.
The health of the students has been
remarkably good and the vast ma
jority of them are enthusiastic over
jbhe high and far-reaching wont that
has been done. Every room in the
dormitory has been engaged and
ticketed lot another session, and
frere it not (or the fact that more
room Is to be provided during the
eummerjg|be college would not be able
to accommodate all who will very
probably wish to enter.

and this feature will probably ahurd
more genuine pleasure for the attend
ants of the school than they would
derive from commencement exercises
at the college.
Rev. Campbell and his assistants
of the colored school have arranged
for very elaborate exercises Wednes
day and Thursday nights—the pro
gram embracing music, recitations,
dialogues and addresses by visitors,
probably by some of the trustees of
the schools, as has been the custom
at former commencements of that
school. The schools have all had a
prosperous year and each one has
made a splendid showing. The at
tendance has been greater than dur
ing any previous session, the teach
ers have labored faithfully and dili
gently, th? scholars, upon the whole,
have applied themselves well and the
results are highly satisfactory to the
trustees and teachers, and to the pu
pils as well.
The program for the exercises at
the colored school is wel! arranged,
and those who have part in it will
no doubt acquit themselves in a man
ner that will reflect much credit upon
their instructors.

he has been on business. Mr. Car-

ligence that the Welsback Light Co.
will erect in Gaffney a $6 (MX) plant
for the purpose of separating mona-
zite. The machinery has been
ordered and the plant will bo erected
at once. The close proximity of
Gaffney to the magnificent monazito
mines of this and Cleveland county
was the factor that led the Welsback
people to select this place for their
plant. Mr. Carroll, who has been
handling monazito for years, was In
