After an Illness of Two Weeks Mrs. Dow
ney Passes Away at the Home of Her
Parents at Liniestone Funeral and Bur
ial at Oakland Cemetery.
Once more the death shadow passes
over the community and carries gloom
and sorrow into a sunshiny and happy
home; bright eyes are dimmed with
tears, hearts are burdened with an
almost unbearable weight of sorrow,
a husband is made wifeless, a pre
cious little cherub is tnade motherless,
mother and father lose a dutiful
daughter and sisters and brothers
lose a loving and devoted sister; but
in the midst of it all may those who
are most deeply efiiicted be able to
say, ‘‘Thy will be done, O Lord.”
It was just as the evening shadows
began to fall, the birds were chirping
their evening farewell, the cattle had
ceased their lowing on the hills and
started for the shed, the laborers had
ceased their week of toil and were
wending their way homeward, as
Amelia Downey, beloved wife of Dr.
James H. Downey, finished her days
of earthly toil and her spirit wended
its way to its eternal home in the
great beyond—it was 7:30 Saturday
evening. About three weeks ago
Mrs. Downey came from Pacolet to
Gaffney to visit her parents, Prof,
and Mrs. H. P. Griffith. She brought
with her a little bright-eyed baby
girl, the surviver of twins that came to
bless the home but about six weeks
before, and mother and daughter re
ceived that welcome that can only
bo bestowed by fond parents and
grandparents. It was only a few
days after her arrival until Mrs.
Downey came up town. The day
was raw and chilly and as a conse
quence of exposure to the weather
Mrs. Downey contracted an illness
that terminated fatally. As the days
came she grew worse, until at last
the trouble developed into peritonitis,
deaib resulting about four days later.
Mrs. Downey did not realize that
death was near until a short while
before the end came She was so
young, and life held for her so many
charms that it was difficult for her to
realize that the sands of life were
rapidly passing away. It was when
a brother imorinted a kiss upon her
whitening forehead that she called
for her little babe, realizing that that
was to be the last time for her to
knowingly clasp the little darling to
her breast. The scene was one whose
pathos beggars description.
Mrs. Drwoey was formerly Miss
Amelia Griffith. Everybody in Gaff
ney will remember her as one of the
most lovable characters that ever
claitned Gaffney as her home. It
was in 1898 that she was wedded to
Dr. Downey, of Pacolet, and moved
from Gaffney to cast her lot among
others. That she won the admiration
and respect of all with whom she
came In contact in her new home was
evinced by the large concourse of
people who came over Qunduy to pay
their respects to the departed. De
ceased was about twenty-eight years
of age. She had been a consistent
member of the Baptist church for
so.ne years.
The funeral was conducted at Oak
land Cemetery Sunday afternoon at
o o’clock, the exercises being con
ducted by Rev. II. J. Haynesworth,
of Pacolet, and Rev. F. C. Hickson,
ot this city. The ceremony was
exceedingly appropriate and beauti
fui. The attendance was perhaps
the largest that has gathered In this
oily on a similar occasion. The pall

Poole, P. Bradford, D D. Little, F.

At the Opera House Tonight.
Tonight the Union Dramatic Club
will present ‘‘A Rival by Request”
at the opera house. Already we have
published the exceedingly compli
mentary notice given the club and
the play by the Union Times. Be
sides the merit attached to the play
there is the social feature of enter
taining our neighbors, and as several
of the players are well known here
there can be but small doubt that
the opera house will be well filled.
Dr. Mu ray Hair, once a resident of
Gaffney, is among the cast, besides
several popular and well known
ladies of Union, to say nothing about
the gentlemen. Then again, there
is hardly any likelihood that there
will be anything else here in the
nature of a show until the latter
part of September, so let all who de
sire to spend a pleasant evening take
advantage of this opportunity.
Prolific Bee*.
Mr. M. C. Spencer, who lives in
the Home neighborhood, has had
,quite a profitable experience with a
swarm of bees. In June of last year
he settled a swarm of bees, and has
since paid little or no attention to
them. Last month this gum swarm
ed four times in seven days, and Mr.
Spencer has successfully hived each
awarm. Mr. Spencer was in town
yesterday and stated that there were
indications that his bees were pre
paring to swarm again. It will not
be long before Mr. Spencer will have
an abundance of honey, and there is
nothing that can be produced with
as littlo care and expense and so
much profit to the owner of the bees
as honey, and the wonder to us is
that more people do not encourage
bee culture.
