The “Old Maid’s Convention”
which was the attraction at the Op
era House Friday evening, under the
management of the Ladies Aid Soci
ety of the First Baptist church, was
a grand success, both in the point
of furnishing a round of continuous
amusement to a delighted audience
and in a financial way.
The play was witnessed by one of
the largest and most select audi
ences that has ever been assembled
in Gaffney, and everyone, from the
oldest to the youngest, highly en
joyed every feature of the program.
The fair actresses were thoroughly
familiar with their parts and con
ducted themselves with the ease and
abandon of stage veterans, at the
same time displaying talent of the
highest order.
Each one was so much of an artist
and acted her part so well that it
would be unfair to make special men
tion of any particular one. Mr. P.
V. Gaffney, in the character of »
‘coon” and Col. T. B. Butler, as pro
fessor, added greatly to the amuse
ment of the occasion and rendered
valuable aid in making the “conven
tion” a success.
quite a handsome little sum was
netted for the church, and much
praise is due the ladies for their un
tiring efforts in its behalf, as well as
for the very creditable entertainment
Friday evening. The “Old Maids”
who formed the convention were:
Mesdames E. B. Wilbur, W. C.
Carpenter, Jno. F. Bridges, Hamil
ton, W. W. Gaffney, B. L. Hames,
L. U. Campbell, Dr. Nesbitt, T. L.
Brown, Wm. Phillips, W. C. Ham
rick, Harry Dodenhoff, W. H. Good
ing; Misses Bessie Kendrick, Fannie
Hopper, May Harris, Edna Sarratt,
Verna Sarratt, Annie Johnson, An
nie Brown.
The specialties of the evening
were: %
Mr. Paul Gaffney, coon; Mrs.
Copeland, song; Misses Eva Ross,
song; Lucy Barton, skirt dancer,
Wilmer Gaffney, recitation; Birdie
Crawley, recitation; Rose Johnson,
violin; Mr. Both Butler, professor.

If the records of the mayor’s court
may be taken as an indication, the
morals of our c'tizens are growing
perceptibly better. There have been
no cases of a serious nature in a long
time, and only three or four minor
ofienses have been on the docket
during the past two or three weeks.
This speaks well for the city. The
police officers are, of course, as vigi
lant as ever, but they are having
very little to do in the way of making
arrests, and this fact is sufficient
proof that not much is being done to
warrant interference by the city
officers.
Occasionally, however, some ob
streperous fellow will break loose in
utter disregard of morals, police
officers and everythig else, and suc
ceed in getting himself before the
city's chief executive.
Last Friday there were two minor
cases tiied, one for drunkenness and
the other for disorderly conduct.
The unfortunate who had taken too
freely of the ‘ rosy” was fined $d 70
or ten days; the other case was dis
missed after a thorough investigation
by the mayor.
Yesterday morning two young men
were up for having engaged in a lit
tle d faculty Saturday afternoon
without any serious results on either
side. After an investigation the
charge against one of ihe combatants
was dismissed, and the case against
the other was continued.
The above cases constitute the
proceedings in the city court for the
last two weeks.

Paster Services at First Uaptiat.
Easter services were held In the
First Baptist church Sunday evening,
having been postponed from the pre
vious Sunday on account of several
members of the church being in
attendance upon the B. Y. P. U.

teresting and appropriate and
were attended by the largest
congregation that has ever gathered
in the new church. Special music
had been selected for the occasion
and this, under the able management
of Prof. Wade R. Brown formed
one of the prettiest features

Rev. Mr. Cree, the pastor
tone particularly inspired
nature of the gathering and preached
one of hia best and most eloquent
sermons. He also preached a good
sermon in the morning to a large and
select congregation.
