WAR POET’S SON.
Verses Itelow Are hy a Hon of the Author
of a Famous I’oeni,
[The poem printed below was sent
us by its author sometime ago with a
request that we criticise it, and pub
lish it or not as we might think
proper. Rather than offer any criti
cisms of our own we lay it before our
readers and give every one of them a
chance to criticise it for himself.
The verses read smoothly, rhyme
well, and there is an air of mystery
about them which is highly favorable
to poetry of some kinds. Tt may in
terest our readers to know that the
author is the son of the writer
of the famous poem, "All Quiet
Along the Potomac To-night.” one of
the ringing war poems of ’61. There
were several claimants to the author
ship of this celebrated poem and the
question was a long time unsettled;
but a few years ago Mr. Oliver estab
lished beyond ail doubt that his fath
er, Captain Oliver of a Georgia regi
ment, was the author. It seems that
the poetic vein has extended to the
son, and we recommend a careful
reading of this product of his genius

Boom-a-loom-a, loom-a-lxvom-a.
Loud machines their work are plying:
Life's an endless, sunny summer,
lie's a fool that talks of dying.
Nought of Heaven and wliat’s before us.
All of earth and things around us,
liullfrog song and jackdaw chorus
Ever, everywhere confound us.
ll'azeu horns without are blaring,
Donkey men are shouting, braying;
Traitor doubts within arc scaring
Childhood faith at home from staying.
Laughing, jeering, swearing, sneering.
Market crowds are pushing, rushing;
Under modest bonnets peering,
Honest checks they set to blushing.
And the face and form adorners
Mingle with the money makers—
Gold-linked friends ami poor folks' scorners,
Mortgage-binders and heart-breakers.
Quickly green grow graves with grasses.
Dim the shadow of Death Angel;
Dream-like from the stricken passes
Echo of the Lord’s Evangel.
Dead the dead, they cannot aid us,
Safe above, they do not need us:
Think of folks who have not paid us—
And when dunned they do not heed usV
Laughter loud and skeptic speering
Fling their deadly witching o’er us;
Not Ills praises -God is hearing
liullfrog song and jackdaw chorus.
God forgot, hut not forgetting.
Hear the prayers we should be making!
Not for aye wilt thou be letting
Us to he our own way taking.
Hack and hack to happy youth time,
Us t j save from evil raring.
Rack and hack to Heavenly truth-time,
Memory’s ship us all is hearing.
Gracious ones who taught us praying,
Gone to he with seraphs singing,
On your graves our ears we’re laying,
in our brains your words are riugiug!

We may seek the Heavens which hold them!

CHEROKEE’S MINERALS.
The County Is Rich With Yalimhlo Ores
anil Metal*.
Everyone interested in minerals,
and especially in the mineral wealth
of Cherokee county, should road the
article in another column written by
"A Miner on the appointment of a
State geologist and minerologist.
Cherokee county is rich in minerals
of all kinds, hut, as "Miner” says,
the owners of the soil that contains
them are nearly all agriculturists
and know little of minerals and
metals. It seems, though, that we
are likely to have a smelting machine
before many days somewhere near
the lower portion of the county, and
that the ores which are there in
abundan e, are to be utilized. The
following from the Hickory Grove
Sun is in reference to this enterprise :
‘‘A gentleman of note, influence
and means was in Hickory last
week looking about and getting
information ls to the quantity of
gold ore in western York. He
informed us that he and other
parties would^ be here again in
about thirty days and that it was
very likely that they would es
tablish a smelting machine here
with a capacity of reducing fifty
tons of ore per day. There is an
abundance of this ore in western
York and just across Broad river in
Cherokee county near Smith’s ford
There s no enterprise that we be
lieve w’ould do more general good in
this community than one like this
and we hope it will soon become a
reality. More later as to this enter-
ptise. Man of means have their eye
on our mineral resources and they
should meet with proper encourage
ment.”

RAVENNA CITIZEN WEDS.
Mr. George W. Chalk Takes Unto Himself
a Helpmeet.
Wednesday night at the home of
the bride, in Spartanburg,Mr. George
W. Chalk, of Ravenna, and Mrs.
Emily C. Smith, of the above named
city, were united in marriage by Rev.
Mr. Richardson, assisted by Rev. Mr.
Covington.
Mr. Chalk is one of Cherokee’s best
citizens and is a leader in bis commu
nity. He was for a long time a mer
chant at Ravenna, but is now a pros
perous planter and stands high in the
esteem and confidence of his neigh
bors and fellow citizens.
Mrs, Smith, the bride, is a good
woman and enjoys the respect and
esteem of a large circle of friends.
The friends of the newly married
couple wish them a life full of peace
and contentment, of happiness and
prosperity, and The Ledger joins
them with hearty congratulations.
The Report Confirmed.
The Carolina Baptist says that one
of the Louisville papers announces
that Rev. A. C. Cree has accepted
the call of the First church of Gaff
ney, and that it hopes to hear the
announcement confirmed and to have
the pleasure, of welcoming Mr. Cree
to South Carolina. No doubt the
Baptist has beard the report con
firmed by this time; but as it is pos
sible that it has not, we take the
liberty of informing our esteemed
contemporary that Mr. Cree has ac
cepted the call and that he expects
to take charge of his church on the
second Sunday in March.
Gaffneyltes In Arkansas.
In a private letter from Mr.
Fletcher Smith who formed one of
the pleasure party that went from
this place to Hot Springs, Ark.,
about two weeks ago, he states that
they are all doing nicely and having
a ".fine time.” They have rented a
cottage and are enjoying some of the
comforts of home life.
The Ledger also has a letter from
Mrs. M. L. Ross, who is one of the
party, which appears in another
column.
We wish them, one and all, a pleas
ant and beneficial stay in Hot
Springs and a safe journey home.
Nesrlng Completion.
The new two-story brick building
that Mr. J. L. Spake is having erected
on Limestone street is nearing com
pletion and will soon be ready for oc
cupancy.
The lower portion will be used as a
store room, while the upper part will
be cut up into rooms for offices and
other -purposes. . When finished it
will be an ornament to Limestone
street, as well as a commodious busi
ness house.
Mr. Spake is thoroughly progres
sive in his ideas—hence the success
that has attended him.
Fnsumonln Can be Prevented,
This disease always results from a
cold or au attack of the grippe aod
may be prevented by the timely use
of Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy.
That remedy was extensively used
during the epidemics of La Grippe of
the past few years, and not a single
case has ever been reported that did
not recover or that'resulted lu pneu

preventive of that dangerous disease.

on the foundation of the new addition
to the power house. Mr. 1/. Baker
nas the contract for enlarging the

The new addition will be twenty-
seven feet long, and two new engines
and another boiler will be put in,
thus making all new machinery.
The gentlemen who have the work in
charge are all men of push and en

completion and the plant put in in
the shortest possible time. Gaffoey
