In response to an invitation Mr. J
V. Sarratt and a Ledger representa
tive spent Wednesday on Broad river
amid Cherokee’s iron mines with Col.
John Logan Black. Mr. Sarratt called
for The Ledger man about 8 o’clock
in the morning, and shortly after his
faithful animal was drawing the two
down Cherokee avenue towards the
river. Nothing worthy of special
mention transpired enroute, and al«

road for the new one that led to the
new ferry was the friendly greeting
given the visitors by Joe Rice, the
colonel’s man-of-all-work. Joe was
buaiJy engaged in building a corduroy
across a boggy place. He discon

in his skiff fetid row across the aiver

cook as well as the house maid, ferry
man, woodchopper, etc. He can do
almost anything, but he says he

as ‘ mystery,” corned beaf hash, rab
bit hash, chicken hash, beef bash,
and every other kind of hash we had
ever heard of, but “deviled” hash was
a puzzle to us. By way of parenthe
sis the Colonel remarked that the
next time we called he would give us
“hell-fired” hash, but Mr Harrstt
says he thinks the Colonel got mixed
and gave us the latter dish on this
occasion. At ahy rate it was so hot
that there were indications that Joe
had lost the pepper box in the pot
and failed to find it, and^t- 8- did
not get cooled off until yesterday
morning. But it was good, neverthe
less, and we hope to be able to eat
“deviled” hash with the Colonel
again. Let the reader make no mis
take and think that “dfevlfed” fcash
was all we had to eat, for the balance
of the menu was of the “warm mem
ber” variety and there was an abun
dance of It. After dinner we were
taken over the place and shown the
iron ore mines. VVe brought a num
ber of fine specimens home with us,
and if there is a skeptic on the sub
ject of valuable iron ore in. Cherokee

ber the Colonel shipped these ores to
the furntce J^Greenboro, realizing
