The Bone of veterans met Friday nl^ht in Col J. Q. Wurdlaw’s office at the Gaffney cotton mill. Not withstanding the disagreeable weath er, twenty-five enthusiastic sons were present and n camp was fully or- gunized. Col. J. G. Wardlaw was unani mously elected commander of the camp, W. C. Carpenter, lieutenant, and W. W. Thomas, adjutant. The staff of officers is, of course, incom plete, but others will be elected later on as the car ip increases in members. A committee, consisting of Col. J. G. Wardlaw, James A. Willis, Esq., Dr’ C. T. Lipscomb, J N. Lipscomb and Win. Webster, was appointed to draft by-laws for the camp, and a standing committee, of D. C. Ross, J. L. McWhorter, W. H. Smith, A. W. Griffith, Julian Lipscomb and J. R. Sparks, was appointed to solicit members. Every applicant for mem bership must bring or send in with his application,a record of his lineage and of his ancestor’s rank and conduct during the war. This is re quired to show whether or not the applicant is eligible for membership, and applies to charter members as well. Mr. W. O. Lipscomb suggested that the name “Smith Lipscomb” be given the camp in honor of his un cle, by that name, who was a gallant soldier in the war between the states. The suggestion was put before the camp and the name was adopted by a unanimous vote. Mr. Smith Lipscomb was born and reared near this place, and is well known by many of our citizens. He entered the array as a private, but by gillant conduct and m ritorious service he won rapid promotion and sionrose to the rank of lieutenant. Mr. Lipscomb is still living and is now a prominent citizen of Texas. The camp should feel honored in bear ing his name. Other business of minor impor tance was disposed of and the meet ing adjourned. The next meeting of Smith Lip scomb Camp, tons of veterans, will be held Friday night, Feb. 22, in the K. of 1’. hall, and every son in the community is requested to be pres ent. A UNIQUE ENTERTAINMENT. Mr*. W. II. li iodliiK Compliments Some of tlie Young Married Folk*. Mrs. W. It. Gooding entertained a few friends last Tuesday evening complimentary to Mr. and Mrs. T L. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Willis, Miss Minnie Carroli and Mr. George G. Byers. After tea the following unique story was handed each guest with the request that they fill in the blanks with some names of Gaffney citizens Mr. and Mrs. St. John But ler, Mrs. T. B. Butler, Miss Wardlaw and Mrs Dr. M. W. Smith completed the personnel of the guests. Miss Wardlaw having supplied the largest number of names was awarded the prize. After deciding to Invite a few friends to tea, I discovered that I was without bread, I determined to get a bag of (Wheat) and (Goforth) to have itground. My mule (Wood) (Nott) go as rapidly as I desired so I stopped to gee a (Reed) and gave him a (Little) of it. This treatment often (Gaines) time. On reaching the branch, I found the (Bridges) washed away, but a (Carpenter) was there and soon had it so we could go over in a (Crawley) fashion. After reaching the mill I was dumbfounded to find the(Hopper) broken and said, (Doggett) what bad luck! I should have turned (Grey) headed, but for the (Cook) who told me to go to the (Baker) and buy bread. I was delighted to see (Sparks) Hying from his oven as I approached his shop. The place was thronged with (Byers), but he sent his Little (John) to the (Cole) (Garrett) for bread, while he got mo some (Lemmons). Myntlc Temple of Altalr. Altair Temple, Dramatic Order Knights of Khorassan, was organized in Spartanburg Thursday night with one hundred and twenty-five charter members. Only two such temples are allowed in a state and Spartan burg was the first to organize one. The D. O. K. K. is the highest rank in Pythianism and corresponds to the Mystic Shrine degree of Masonry. A majority of the members reside in Spartanburg; but the others are from other places, Gaffney furnishing twenty-three of them. Col. J. G. Wardlaw, of this city, was elected secretary of the Mystic Temple of Altalr. ______ A Correction. In Mr. N. Lipscomb’s card in the issue of The Ledger there were two errors which destroyed the sense of the meaning. For instance: Mr. Lipscomb wrote “I asked him to take charge of the letting and building of the bridge,” and ic appeared “letting and bidding.” Then again he wrote: “As to the $300 bid which was made by ’phone message,” and it appeared “Thos. Message.” We make these corrections in justice to Mr. Lip scomb and ask the indulgence cf a forgiving constituency. Ulorloa* New*. Comes from Dr. JJ. B. Cargile, of Washita, I. T. Sunday’s Cot u in hi a State contains the pleasing intelligence that Mr. Butler’s bill to authorize the commis sioners of Cherokee county to build bridges across Broad river had passed its third reading in the Senate un contented. There may be those w ho have an idea that the building of i!m-I bridge will work to the advai i t ..f some people, especially the mt chants of Black-hurg hut B vji >• There is not a person who liv ^ n j the other side of the river who wiM come to Gaffney to trade simply b - cause they can come over the river on a free bridge. There must be s une greater inducement than this to bring them here. The only effect the building of this bridge will have will be to abolish one or more ferries or reduce their revenue, and while we regret that the ferrymen will be made to suffer some decrease in rev enue it is essential that the good of the masses be subserved.
