C., spent Sunday in the city with her brother, CJarence, of the Gaffney Foundry and Machine Shops. W. Sam Lipscomb, of Asbury, was in the city yesterday. Worth Little, of Charlotte, was here Wednesday. G. W. Humphries, of Cowpens, was in to see us yesterday. Rev. 8. T. Creech, of Kelton, ar rived in the city yesterday for a short stay among his relatives and friends here. Mr. Creech is always a wel come visitor to his former home. Hunting In Florida. Will Thompson, son of Mr. R. C. Thompson of this city, is in Florida on a hunting expedition, in company with bis friend, W. R. Livingston, manager of the company store at Lockhart. In a letter to a friend at this place, Will said that he was having a splen did time and plenty of sport. He and his friend went out about twenty miles from St. Augustine on a camp hunt u few days ago, having employed a guide, ami the result was four fine deer, several ducks and a large quan tity of quail. While out they visited Flornict Vi>la and were honored with an invitation to help themselves to oranges, grape fru'if and everything they warned in tlidl lino that the villa could affnrd Will has been in Florida about two weeks, but expects to return home in a f< w days. A Popular Pliarmai ;«t. Dr J. D. 1'imm ns, who has been ni charge of the prescription depart- meiit of S. B. Crawley & Co.’s drug store for the past six months, left Wednesday for Florence to begin the duties of a similar position with F. U. Lake. Dr. Timmons is a genial, warm hearted and sunny-spirited young man, with a high-toned, Christian character, and he made many friends during his stay in our city. In bis business he is courteous, polite, ac commodating, strictly attentive to bis duties, and is a valuable man in bis profession. We regret having Dr. Timmons leave Gaffney; but our best wishes follow him and we commend him to the good people of Florence as the embodiment of all the virtues we have attributed to him. Change ot Offices at Court House. The location of the county audi tor’s office in the court house has been changed to a room in the front of the building once occupied by the clerk of court. The clerk’s office is now in rear of building in the room formerly used as a council chamber. Cherokee county, will be heard in the State supreme court be ginning Tuesday, April IGth, and continuing for four days. Rev. C. E Robertson, the former pastor of the Presbyterian church, conducted prayer meeting services at the Second Baptist church, to the delight of all who attended, Rev. A. Madole, of Spartanburg, will occupy the pulpit of the Lime stone Street Methodist Church Sun day morning and evening. A cordial invitation is extended to everybody to attend these services. The faculty of the National Univer sity of Chicago, III., has issued a diploma to Rev. Richard Mayers, of this city, granting him the S. T. D. degree, he having passed successfully a rigid examination. Dr. Mayers is a native of the British West Indies. Ed. Turner is again with 8. B. Crawley & Co., druggists, of this city. Mr. Turner is a clever young gentle man and a hard worker, and his many friends will be glad to welcome him back to active business life in the city after a sojourn “down on the farm.” J. H. Beard, a licensed embalmer, who possesses a diploma from Clark’s School of Embalming, St. Louis, Mo., and who has a license from the Geor gia State Board of Embalming, has accepted a position with the Acme Furniture Co. Mr. Beard arrived Sunday and assumed his new duties Monday morning. The ladies of the Limestone Street Methodist Church will give what is termed a “Box Supper” tomorrow night, commencing at seven o’clock. The supper will be given in the base ment of the Second Baptist church, the officials of the latter church hav ing kindly tendered the building for the purpose. The proceeds will be devoted to liquidating the indebted ness on the seats of the Limestone Street Methodist church, Mr. John W. Parker Head. Old “Uncle Johnny” Parker, one of Mercer’s venerable citizens, died at his home near that place last Mon day afternoon after an illness of about three weeks. He was said to be about ninety yeers old, though no one. not even himself, knew his exact age. He distinctly remembered the war of 1812 and loved to talk of the obi I m s in t his section. Mr. Parker was twice married and has ten children, two of whom were kil'ed in the war between the States, and six are still living. His remains were buried Tuesday in the presence of a large crowd of relatives, friends and acquaintances who had assembled to pay their last respects to one whom they loved Funeral of Mr Humphries. The funeral of Mr. Thos. Hum phries took place Tuesday morning at 10:30 from Providence church, the services being conducted by the Rev. F. C. Hickson, pastor. The ceremonies were earnest and impres sive. The remains were laid to rest amid the shady oaks of Providence graveyard. The funeral service was attended by a large concourse of the relatives and friends of the deceased. Pneumonia Can be Prevented.
