O. B. HARRIS SKIPS.
He I,eaves Itel.lnd a Number of Unpaid Ac
counts with (iaffney Merchant*.
About aix mouths ago a dapper lit-
t!e m in with a smooth face and a
polite address came to Gaffney to
open the new Commercial Hotel.
He was received with open arms and
hailed as a good fellow in general.
The kird hearted people of Gaffney
received him warmly. If he were to
come back now he would rec ivo a
warmer welcome than he did on his
first appearance. The reason is that
the people—or at least some of them
—know him better He opened the
hotel with a great flourish of
trumpets. He invited everybody to
come and dine with him and to par
take of his hospitality. Things
moved along smoothly and noi a
wave of trouble rolled across the
minds of Gallney merchants. The
dapper little fellow is no longer seen
upon our streets. The guests who
visit the Commercial are no longer
greeted with that innocent smile.
The minds of some of Gaffney’s iner-
chauts no longer bear that serenity
of former days. The cause of it all
is that the dapper little fellow has
skipped. He did not exactly skin by
the light of the moon, but he did the
next thing to it. Ho skipped by the
early morning light. Yes, he is gone,
and we mourn for him because he is
not. May his mind rest in peace,
eternal peace, because ours cannot.
We long to see him. We know him
to the tune of a double eag!e and
more. Others know him to the tune
of more.
The guests of the Commercial are
greeted with another smiling counte
nance now. This one is a tried and
true one. They need have no fears
hut that they will receive a warm
welcome and tho merchants have no
fears of their bills not being paid.
Your Uncle Samuel Hopper is the
genius that stands behind the coun
ter and reads the name of the guests
upside down as he writes it on the
ledger and greets him with a pleas
ant “howdy-do.” May it be a long
while before Uncle Sam and the
Commercial part company.
THE MAYOR’S COURT.
Only Tho CnneH Before HU Honor Last
Week and Two lesterduy.
The offenders against the city or
dinances have been very few during
the last two weeks; but whether it is
that the standard of morality is being
raised higher among the usual offend
ing class, or whether they are be
coming more adept in the art of con-
(•♦aling >heir crimes and escaping
toe vigilance of tiie officer.-, is a mat
ter for conjecture.
There was only one case last week
and that was against a colored indi-
| vidual by the name of Alice Towell
for being a disorderly person and us
ing language not laid down in the
catechism. Alice pleaded not guilty
to the shocking charge and was dis
missed.
Yesterday Bob Liles, a young col
ored sport who has a habit of “iden
tify ing” himself with almost every
thing, except a good moral charac
ter, and who seems to have a fond
ness for chaingang hospitalities, was
up yesterday on a charge of pettit
larceny—a charge that he has an
swered to before, Mr. W. 0. Johnson
being the plaintiff. The case was
continued until this morning at 9
o’clock.
The only other case was against a
young white man for violating the
bicycle law. He was fined two dol
lars, which he paid.
“Suffer Little Cblldreu.’’
Little Irene, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Luther Holmes, died on Christ
mas day at the home of her parents
in the Limestone cotton mill village.
Irene was between five and six
years of age and had been #ick about
six weeks of typhoid fever, and her
death was caused by some throat
trouble resulting from that dread
disease.
The body was taken to Drayton-
ville cemetery for burial and there it
was consigned to its last resting
place, while fond parents and a few
friends looked on with weeping eyes.
The bereaved parents have many
sympathizers in this sffiiction that,
sooner or later, must come to all.
A Boy Hurt.
A little boy by the name of Love
lace, who works in the Gaffney cotton
mill, got his hand caught in a carder
Saturday and pretty badly lacerated.
He was urought to the Cherokee
Drug store, where the wound was
dressed, and, fortunately, it was
found that amputation would not be
necessary.
With proper care, he will have the
use- of his baud in a short time.
Not Tlie Kind She Wanted.
A well known lady who lives but a
few miles from the city was in town
yesterday and stepped in to the store
of an equally well known merchant
and asked if be had any honey.
“Yes mam,” replied the merchant
“l always keep it, I am honey my
self.”
“That ina> beso. ” replied the lady,
“but you are mighty full of bee
r^a'i.”
A ChauKe of Kaitr.
Mr. J. K Killian, who was for some
time connecUd with tho Gaffney ^
Manufacturing Company, in this I
city, but who went from here to
Charlotte to work for the Alpha
Mills, has accepted a position with
the Cherokee Falls Manufacturing
Company. The Ledger is pleased to
have Mr. Killian so near it again.
Ho is not omy a good mill man but
is a pleasant and affable citizen and
while we cannot have him in our
midst we want the next best thing
and that is to nave him as near us
possible.

Every woman in the country
ought to know about
Mother’s Friend
Those who do know about it
wonder how they ever got along
without it. It has robbed child
birth of its terrors for many a
young wife. It has preserved her
girlish figure and saved her much
suffering. It is an external lini
ment and canies with it therefore,
absolutely no danger of ujvsetting
the system as drugs taken intern
ally are apt to do. It is to be
rubbed into the abdomen to soften
and strengthen the muscles which
are to bear the strain. This means
much less pain. It also prevents
morning sickness and all of the
other discomforts of pregnancy.
A druggist of Macon, Ga., says:
“I have sold a large quantity of
Mother’s Friend and have never
known an instance where it has
failed to produce the good results
claimed for it.”
A prominent lady of Lam-
berton, Ark., writes: “With my
first six children 1 was in labor
from 24 to 30 hours. After using
Mother’s Friend, my seventh was
born in 4 hours.”
