The company’s charter has not yet arrived, but a commission has been issued and tiie charter is daily expected The Acme Furniture Company was incorporated by Messrs, W. l'\, W. V. and C. C. Humphries, all business men of higit standing and with some experience in the furniture line. The capital stock is ten thousand dollars, divided into a hundred shares at one hundred dollars each, and the organi zation of the company was for Hie ^aie of furniture, stoves and tinware, buggies, wagons and other vehicles, undertaker's goods and for the manu facture of furniture. The Messrs. Humphries have secured the services of Mr. \V. \V (rienn, of Atlanta, (!a., to take charge of their undertaking department. Mr. Glenn has had many years of experience in some of the largest undertaking and embalm ing estabUshmcnts in (ho south and is an adapt in his profession. He thoroughly understands the art of embalming and comes highly recom mended in every respect and with his long experience in every bianeh of the business he will be valuable to the Acme Furniture Company. .Mr. Glenn is a native of Gaston county, X’ 0 , and lived in Gastonia for several years. Messrs. Ask the question, What great Symphony Orchestras have engaged him as soloist? With that eminent artist has he been heard in public? These are the tests of rank. The Violinist, Leonora Jackson, easily bears these tests. During the past thirty years thousands of Ameri cans have gone abroad for musical study; but very few have ever been heard of. She stands prominent as the one violinist who has earned a great European reputation and been able to command engagements from the most renowned Orchestral Soci eties of Germany, England and France, not to mention her own land. She has appeared in concerts with I’aderewski, Melbe, Xordica, I’atti and the greatest artists. Last spring she was the soloist here of the NVw York Philharmonic (two concerts;) Boston Symphony Orchestra (eight concerts;) Chicago Thomas Orchestra (two concerts;) Cincinnati Sym phony (two;) Pittsburg Symphony (two;) St. Louis Choral Symphony and Louisville Music Festival Orches tras (one concert each,) besides a long list of appearances with the most important Musical Clubs East and West. It is fairly overwhelming to think what this young artist has accomplished and whut honors have been heaped upon her. A prominent New York critic rightly said: “She has done her native land great credit." The coming visit to our city of this distingui-hd young virtuoso and her assisting artists will be an event of great Interest and importance. EMANCIPATION DAY. Cber(>k(*i > 'H Colored l’o|iiiliitlou Celebrate Eclat I.HHt Tuesday. The colored people of Cherokee county covered themselves with glory last Tuesday, the occasion being the celebration of Amancipation Day. About 1(J o’clock the strains of music could be heard on the streets and one could judge from the hustle and bustle of the colored people that the day was theirs and theirs only. The parade was lengthy and altogether creditable, Richard Corry was chief marshall, and Holomon in all his glory was never happier than was “Dick" on this occasion. Rev. R. C. Campbell, one of the best colored men in Cherokee, was the chairman of the celebration, and ho conducted the atlalr with credit to himself and his race. He was assisted by Rev. E. L. Beaty and Prof. P. M. Alexan der. Rev. It. C. Campbell read the Emancipation Proclamation. Speeches were made by a number of prominent colored divines and papers bearing on the race question were read. The celebration came to a close with an entertainment in the evening. Good order was maintained throughout the entire proceedings and the whole celebration was alto gether creditable to the promoters and the race Oil Mill atC'OWlM’UN. A charter has been issued to the Cowpens Cotton Oil Mill Company, of Cowpens, which has a capital stock of $1 000. The corporators of the company are: Win. M. Webster, W. B. Potter, E 0. Webster and Frank X. Moore, with C. B. Martin us presi dent and W. B. Potter, secretary and treasurer. This will be a good thing for Cowpens and we trust the enter prise may meet with abundant suc cess. Rei'i<|>Uon Abandoned. On account of the illness of their son Charley, Mr. and Mrs. B. K Hutnphrh-s announce that the recep tion, which was to have been given Wednesday morning immediately af ter the marriage of their daughter to Mr. T. L Brown, has been abandoned. The marriage, however, will take place at the appointed hour at the First Baptist church. Miss Bidez left the city yeste r duy for Claremont College to resume her duties as instructor in that insti tution. Last Wednesday at the home of the bride’s parents, in the Battle ground section of the county, Mr. Bookter Ray was united in wedlock to Miss Alice Scruggs, daughter of ’Squire and Mrs. M. B. Scruggs. The ceremony was performed by VV. T. Scruggs, N. P., a relative of the bride, in the presence of a number of Hie admiring friends of the contract ing parties.
