In ttio tarty part of January nearly
three years ago, INKS, Mr J. E.
Hierck, of Philadelphia, then general
manager and director of a large and
successful Carpet Manufacturing Co ,
took a trip through the south for the
purpose of locating a site for a carpet
factory, a long cherished and much
desired undertaking, and thus start
an entirely new industry in the South
land lie was attracted to the town
ot GatTney; the result is that in our
town is established the pioneer ear-
pel mill of this section. The charter
was issued by the secretary of the
State on June 10th, 181)8. Ground
was broken for the foundation on
May 28th, and before the first of Sep
tember perfect rolls of carpet and
art .squares were being shipped to
different parts of the country. The
certainly was an example of energy.
The main mill is 128x71 feet, two
stories high, with a three story build
ing 71 x 18 feet, office increased from
11x22 feet to 58x22 feet, engine room
42x20 feet, boiier house 42x10 feet,
dye house 60x42. in addition to
these buildings the company has
erected dwellings for the operatives.
They have since been compelled to
erect a building 10x10 feet, for the
additional requiiemants of their busi
ness. They have their own water
works and electric light and fire pro
lection plant and are always com
plimented on the general good con
dition and appearance of the plant
and the efficiency of the fire depart
ment. Both male and female opera
lives are employed, the male element
predominating. The machines used
are of the most complete and latest
pattern. The plant is finely situ
ated, having a natural water supply
of 200,()()() gallons. There is over
thirty acres of land owned by the
company. The operatives dwellings
are nicely situated in a pine grove.
It. manufactures rugs and carpets in
manygradis. It sells its out-put in
all sections of the country to the
amount of many thousands of dollars
annually. The employees are the
most skilled and intelligent, as their
line of industry requires thought amt
an eye for color ell cts, in addition to
operating difficult Jacquid looms. On
February 17th 1899, the voters of the
tnvn decided by a vote ofJ278 to 29
to exempt the carpet mill Jfrom mu
nicipal taxes for li*.e years, thus show ■
iug the appreciation of the tirst
Southern carpet mill by the pro
gressive|cily of Galfney. In the last
issue of The Ledger a full list ofthf
dealers in North and South Carolina
is recorded to be multiplied by the
same number throughout the United
Slates. Their success is due to three
cardinal points, namely: First, an
assortment of patterns sufficiently
large to please the individual taste of
each customer und equalled by the
best foreign and domestic offerings.
Second, goods of sterling valu
Third, prices commensurate with
values given. They have studied such
points for years, and have proven
their ability to combine these requi
sites, hence the demand for their
goods which are sold in thirty-nine
states, and thus Galfney is now known
all over the country. JAny of the deal
ers whose names are ^printed in that
list will be very glad indeed to sup
ply the consumer with anything de
sired in carpets, rugs or mattings
A small order is given as prompt ut«
tention as a large one. They are “in

spectrally solicit your patronage,
thereby aiding this home industry to
turn out a far greater production
They wish you the merriest kind of
Christmas filled with joy and a pros
perous New Year and new century. It
is a mutter of gratification toMr. J.E
Bierck, president ana treasurer, that
the success estimated has been at
tained, and who says, “that before
many years the South will be the
greatest manufacturing centre of the
country.” He has been in this busi
ness all his life, is thoroughly ac
quainted with all its details, having
passed through each stage from the
lowest. Under his direction the rest
of the management have helped to
make this mill a success in their own
departmenrs, each one being manager
by persons who have had charge of
those special departments for many
years, and of tried experience and
ability.

GANGER
Sufferers from this horrible malady
neaily always inherit it — not necessarily
rom the parents, but may l»e from some
remote ancestor, for Cancer often runs
through several generations. This deadly
joisou may lay dormant in the blood fot
years, or until you reach middle life, then
the first little sore or ulcer makes its ap
pearance— or a awollen gland in the
•roast, or some other part of the !>ody,
gives the first warning.
To cure Cancer thoroughly and perma
nently all the poisonous virus must Ik
diminated from the Mood—every vestage
>f it driven out. This S. S. S. does, and
s the only medicine that can reach deep-
jeated, obstinate blood troubles like this.
When all the poison has been forced out
of the system the Cancer heals, and the
disease never returns.
Cancer begins often in a small way, as the
following Idler from Mrs Shirer shows:
A small pimple enme on my isw about an inch
below the ear on the left side of my face. Itgav*
me no pain or inconven-
einee, and I should have
forgotten atsmt it had it
not hetyun to inflame and
Itch ; it would bleed a
little, then scab over, but
«ould not heat. This
continued for some lime,
v,hen my jaw began to
■well, be com iug very
painful. The Cancer be-
«>an to eat and spread,
until it wasas large as*
half dollar, when I heard
of S. S. S. and determin-
tdto give it a fair trial,
e.nd it was temarkahle
what a wonderful effect
it had from the very beginning; v he *orebeg*n to
heal and after taking a few tx>ttles disappeared
entirely. This was two ye; rs ago ; theie are still
no signs of the Cancer, and my general heatlb
continues good.—Mrs R. Shire*, La Plata, Ma
