P.\ it is, Dec. 17.—The Cross of Legion
of Honor has been conferred upon
Madame Hero-thorn, wife of the Aus
trian charge d'art'nires at Peking, for
her heroic conduct and assistance to the
Ereiieii during the siege of the legations.
Only one other foreign woman has been
tints decorated. She is Marie Schelle-
neck, a Helgian woman, who disguised
her sex and joined Napoleon's army as
a private soldier and became a corporal,
a sergeant and then a lieutenant.
She served 11 years, went through 12
campaigns and wascight times wounded.
Napoleon decorated her personally in
ISO*.

the decoration of Madame Herosthorn,
who, with her liu-baud, is rewarded for
their personal bravery tn defending the
Trench legation after Minister Pichou

On lust Triday night a most dt-
light fill rocetition was given at
Limestone College, at which the
chivalry of Galfney and the beauty of
Limestone mingled in ecstasy of joy.
It being the first time such an enter
tainment has been offered by the
college, there was a zest, a buoyancy
an enthusiasm among both guests
and entertainers rarely incident to
such occasions. The spacious par
lors, halls and reception rooms of
the college were brilliantly illumi
nated, tastefully decorated, and
thrown wide open to the assembled
guests, while one hundred beautiful
young ladies, charmingly attired, en
tertained with flashes of wit and
smiles of beauty, ali presenting a
scene of enchantment belonging
more appropriately to fairyland.
Refreshments were served in tiie
large dining-room and perhaps tiie
most striking feature of the occasion
were trie toasts and responses that
wi re listened to by all with eager de
light.
Col. J. G Wardlaw was toast-mas
ter and lie is without a peer or a rival
in such business as that. He was,
on this occasion, in ids happiest
mood and Ids bright, pointed and
graceful hits were among the most
j delightful things of tiie hour.
Dr. Lodge responded to the toast,
"Our guests,” in ids own charming
and eloquent manner, and our fellow-
townsman, I). Claude Ross, respond
ed to the address of welcome in a
speech which was admitted on all
sides to be the gem of the evening.
1’rof R D. Wilson, in chaste and
elegant words, responded to the
toast, "Gaffney,” Prof. Griffith to
"Limestone College” and Lieut
Oliver Surratt, of West Point Acade
my, to “Woman ” in enthusiastic
and eloquent words.
Mr. F. G. Stacy was called out
and made settle graceful and timely
supplemental remarks.
The speeches were all tine and
we dislike to make distinctions, hut
the effort of Mr. I). Claude lto?*s
really deserves special commenda
tion. He hud the audience witii
him from start to liuisli and even
his pauses were more eloquent than
the other speakers’ words. Each
word as it came from his lips was
weighted witii power, ami his perora
tion carried everything before it.
His fellow townsmen are all proud
of him and there is little talk among
them since the happy event but of
Claude and his speech.
This rect ption was called an “ini
tial reception,” and tiie young men
j of Gaffney nil ardently hope that the
name indicates that many more such
delightful occasions are to follow.

Presiding Elder W. P. Meadors
preached two able sermons in Gaffney
Sunday. In the morning he preach
ed for tiie Huford Street church con
gregation and in the evening to the
Limestone Street church congrega
tion. Mr. Meadors is one of the best
preachers in the South Carolina Con
ference and his sermons are always
edifying and uplifting, and his efforts
on this occasion came up to the
usual high mark of excellence Mon
day morning Mr. Meadors called in to
see The Ledger and spent a few (to

Rev. I) A Patrick, the new pastor
of Limestone Street M. K. church,
arrived in tiie city yesterday. He
preached at Gethsemane and Wil
son’s Chapel Sunday. This was Mr.
Patrick’s first work on his new
charge. Mr. Patrick comes from
Cordesville charge, in Berkeley
county, where he has been stationed
for tin past three years He is a
single man and an earnest worker and
will doubtless win his way into tin*
hearts of our people.

Ordination services were held at
tiie Second Baptist church Sunday
evening. Mr. Ford preached a special
sermon for tin* occasion. The large
congregations at this church is an
indication that Mr. Ford has not
only won the affection of his people
hut that he is retaining it. Mr
Ford is a genial and clever Christian
! gentleman and one of the best
preachers in Gaffney.

as Miss Della Rhyne, was faithful
to “Moses,” seeking him . ver with a
woman’s persistence.
"Cornelia,” the Roman matron,
was excellently impersonated by Miss
PollocK.
Mrs. Morris Freeman as "Cleo
patra,” fully sustained the Dart of
the fascinating woman who lost
"Mark Anthony,” the world.
With stately stepping came the
Virginia queen, ’ Elizabeth,” witii
tier queenly air and high rouciie,
well taken by Mrs. Edward Dougherty.
"Mother Bickerdick.” by Mrs.
Thomas llugiiej, was one of the
most popular characters of the even
ing. She was the spice and ginger of
tin* whole play.
“St Cecila” was sweetly repre
sented by Miss Gertrude Sherer. who
sang Gounurd’s “Guardian Angel.”
“Agrissi of Bologna” found u tine
interpreter in Miss Julia Guyton.
The woman philosopher,“Hypatia”
was present in the charming person
of Miss Anna Sherer.
The next turn of the crank brougnt
to tiie eyes of the prssent "Poca
hontas,” tiie pretty Indian maiden,
taken by Miss Edith Gaden.
Miss Julia Moore was the "Maid of
Orleans.” always u famous and in
teresting character.
The part of "Sappho” was taken
by Miss Annie Lee Freeman, who
sang' For i'liis” by D-Koren with
fine effect.
“Martha Washington” was very
picturefque. and tiie part well car
ried out by Miss Ethel Maxwell.
The last character left a pleasing
farewell with tiie audience, being the
sweet and pure “Priscilla” naively
taken hy Miss Edna Davis.
After the chorus, ' Vive la Chrono
than,” and march, the inventress
declared the characters dissolved and
they disappeared in Die midst of u
hazy but famous past.
Tne costumes to which much cate
and thought hud been given were very
beaut if til. The mechanical features
of tiie stage settings were well con
ceived and carried out, under tiie
management of Major J. F. .lories.

Some time ago Col. T. B. Butler
and Mr. Robert A. Jones went down
in tiie country a few miles to visit
their friend, Mr. James A Service,
and to have a day’s outing with gun
and dog. They returned to Gaffney
witii seventy-four birds us the result
of their hunt and their excellent
marksmanship.
A few days afterwards, these two
gentlemen, accompanied by Mr L.
K Ross, made another trip to tiie
scene of their former exploit ; and
this time they bagged eighty birds on
tiie same ground where tiie first ones
were killed. Thus, out of two short
hunts they brought down one hundred
and fifty-four birds, besides ten rab
bits which came in as incidentals,
insomuch as they did not go gunning
for that particular game.
These are mostly facts, and we
give them just as they were given to
us, without any variations

Rev. R C. Camphell, pastor of
Dunton’s Chapel M. E. church, re
turned to tiie city yesterday from
Darlington where he had been to at
tend the annual conference of his
church. The many friends of this
worthy colored servant of Christ
will he glatl to know that lie has been
returned to this charge for another
}ear. This makes the fifth year
that tiie Rev. Campbell ha* been in
Gaffney and lie husjmude a host of
friends with both races by his up
right walk and gentlemanly de
meanor.
