It contains some very interesting figures for the student of history to study. Some of these we give in this connection, thinking it will he of in terest to a large number of our readers. The whole number of battles and skirmishes both on land and water was 1MS2, lifty of which were in South Carolina. It was put up by Mr. Hopperfield, of Yorkville, and weighs 2r>00 pounds. An average of 220 murders a year for ten years is a bad showing for our State. It proves that the whisky and pistol dealers are doing a better business in their line than the schools, courts and churches. Out of a population of C/.H J06, (according to last census ) the State of Maine has only had an average of eighteen murders a year during the TRAGEDY IN UNION. Tom taoiiigH Tak«*H tli«* Lite.* of OV4frr Splawai. A very sad and deplorable tragedy was enacted in Fnion last Thursday ! the result of which John T. Splawn, j overseer of the spinning-room in the new mill, lost his life; Tom Goings, a 1 discharged section hand in the same mill, who did Die killing, is a fugitive from justice, and the families of both arc deep in sorrow. The Fnion Times gives the follow- I ing account of the terrible affair: “A tragedy occurred at the Fnion cotton mills yesterday evening at six- thirty o’clock. The particulars as near as we have been able to gather them are about us follows: Mr. Splawu, the boss of the new mill spinning room discharged Mr. Tom Going, a section hand. Going went away, and was heard to remark (that he would get even with -Mr. Splawn. Shortly afterwards he went up in the tower, where he found Mr. Splawn at his de^k. Going pulled his pistol and firt-d four shots into the body of Mr. Snluwn. The first of tlie halls severed the jugular vein, and another broke his right arm, another entered the left hip near the groin while a fourth penetrated the hack. Going’s ran down stairs and us he passed one of the men lower down he said “I have killed the ,” and tie went out and gut in a buggy with a grey horse hitched to it, which was in waiting, and drove off. He had not been caught when we went to press. Mr. Splawn was at once taken to his home and received every attention I by Drs. Smith and AusteB, assisted by a lauy physician, Mrs. C. E. Bixby. He was bleeding profusely at last account, and little hope was enter tained of hisreovtry. It is a deplorable affair and is deep ly regretted by all. It is said that Mr. Going was under the influence of liquor when he committed the terrible ! deed.” The way in which we do our work ! may not he of much consequence to , the world, but it is of the greatest consequence to ourselves.
