A very pretty wedding was solem nized at Harlem Park Methodist Episcopal church, Baltimore, on Wed nesday evening November 28th, by the Rev. J. C. Eicholson. The con tracting parties were Mr. Howard 8. Kroh, well known in insurance circles, and Miss Annie Lyell Brohawn, daughter of Mr. John Brohawn of the firm of Daniel Miller, Co. The altar was elaborately decoratad with pot ted plants, the contracting parties standing under a bower of palms. The bride and groom entered the church to the strains of Lohrengrin. preceded by their ushers and maid of honor. The bride’s gown was of crepe de chine trimmed with mous seline and Duchess lace, besides she wore a tulle veil caught with dia monds and orange blossoms and she carried a shower boquet of bride’s roses. The maid of honor, Miss Rose Northam, was gowned in silk batiste with point lace and carried American beauty roses. The ushers were Wal ter Kroh, brother of the groom, Mr. T. A. Herring. Mr. VV’. B. Cromer of Baltimore and Harry Mayer of Dover, Del. Among the guests were Mrs. John Brohawn, in black crepe and jet, Mrs. J. F. Garrett of Gaffney, 8. C., in heliotrope trimmed in mous- scline and panne velvet, Miss Free man Garrett, who wore sage green and old rose, Miss Lula Garrett in brown and heliotrope, Miss 8. A. Brohawn, in grey trimmed in liberty silk and black velvet, Miss Helen Brohawn in ashes of rose bengeliue and green panne velvet, Miss Nellie Brohawn who wore pink silk, Mrs. Kroh in black silk and Mies Mabel Kroh in green mulle arid lace. After the ceremony the bride and groom left f >r a trip North, upon their return they will reside at 821 N. Fulton Ave. The presents, numbering over a hundred, were costly and beautiful. A Y. M. C. A. for Gaffney. A movement is on foot to organize a Young Men’s Christian Association for Gaffney. Several prominent bus iness men are taking an interest in the movement and there is every in dication that it will be a success. This is a move along proper lines. There should be some place for the young men to gather on Sunday af ternoon and pass an hour in religious development. The program could consist of short talks on religion by business men, vocal and instrumen tal solos, congregational singing, etc. The Ledger sees no reason why this enterprising little city of six thou sand souls should not have a Y. Owing to the bad weather there was not much of a crowd in town yes terday a 1 the salea were light. Several of our city friends came in to see us Saturday and took advan tage of tii9 dollar rate to have their subscriptions renewed. Mr. and Mrs. Barney Clary are happy over the arrival of a little vii-itor at their home on Buford street —it is a girl. There were services in the Second Methodist church Sunday night. Rev. Creech, the nastor, was absent, but. notwithstanding that fact, quite an interesting meeting was had. “Jij'L A. Willis, Esq., and bride, of Gaffney, were here this morning.” so says the Spartanburg Journal of Saturday. The Journal is u little previous, us Mr. Willis is not yet married. Joe McArthur returned from Tryon, N, C., yesterday morning, where he had been in search of th^ mules that were taken from his father’s stable Friday night. He did not succeed in finding eithir the mules or the men who sloie them. The demand for houses in Gaffney etiii exceeds the supply, notwith standing tiie fact that new ones are going up in almost every portion of the city. If there is a single vacant I dwelling house in the place we are | not aware of it. Mr. liii{;li<i« Dra«J Mr. Charlie Hughes, the convict guard, who wa« shot by Wilson, an other guard, in a difficulty at Blacks burg lust Monday night, died of his wounds haturdHy morning about 3 o'clock. The body was taken to Abbeville, his old home, for inter ment. Mr. Hughes left a wife and five children, who have, until recently, resided in this cltv; two of the chil dren working in the Gaffney cotton mill fora year or two. His family followed his remains to Ahbevilh: and I will make that place their home in the future. Wilson, who did the Shooting, and who was severely cut himself, is in juil at this place and is recovering from his wounds iiughtg’ tragic and untimely death was indeed a sad blow to his wife and children, and the entire affair is deeply regretted, insomuch that it was entirely uncalled for. The Lloyd & Genter Stock Company Not a Keprexeillative Organ Gat ion. The iio-called performance of the Eclipse .Stock Company at the opera house last evening certainly eclipsed Meeting of Cooper Literary Society The Cooper Literary Society of Limestone College will hold a public meeting in the college auditorium on Friday night next, Dec. 7th. The public is cordially invited to attend this meeting. anything ever seen in this town for acting purporting to come from pro fessionals. Indeed we have no hesi- tency in saying that there have been a number of ametuer performances in Gaffney in the past few years that eclipsed the Eclipse Stock Company from a histronic point of view. The truth of the matter is that there is not an actor or actress in the aggregation The people did not know their lines and they were as stiff as sticks. The Ledger has no desire to hurt the feel ings of anybody but when people as say to be professionals and endeavor to obtain the money of the public by claiming to be what they are not then it becomes the duty of this newspaper to inform the public as to their true character. We are sorry to have been “taken in” in such a manner but we are thankful that the inclement weather of last evening keep so many of the amusement lov ing people of Gaffney at home. The specialties were of the lower order, the only redeeming one being that of the innocent little boy. The whole performance was a disappointment aud neither this paper nor the opera bouse managers can or will endorse the Eclipse Stock Company. Of course people.are not expected to give a really first-class performance for the prices charged at this show but we do not believe the perfor mances are worth the prices charged, In truth we do not believe they are worth the time it takes to attend one, let alone the price. Clt-rku Sali-H. Silesday did not draw much of a crowd yesterday, owing to the bad weather, and the sales were few. In the case of J. J McClure vs. J. J. Smith et ul, 110 acres nf land near Thicke'y were bought by Dr. W. C. Hamrick for $220 00. One tract of 100 acres in case of Jolly vs. Jolly brought $950.00 and was bought by James Sparks. Tlie bank of Chester sold at private sale the lands on Broad river former- y held by the Magnetic Iron and Steel Ore Company containing 1208 acres and taking in the old “Chero- tee Iron Works.
