LAST OF HIS FAMILY. 1I« Whh One of the Pioneers of This Sec tion and a Familiar Figure In Gaffney— Uls Karthly Pilgrimage Ended In Peace. Funeral and Uurlal. ’Squire Gaffney is dead. The last day of bis earthly pilgrimage has closed and the end was peace. The old oak that has weathered the tem pests for years and withstood the storms of time has at last fallen, and the monarch of the forest is^no more. Henry G. Gaffney was born on Feb. 2, 1816. and was therefore in hie eighty-fifth year. He was a son of Michael Gaffney, one of the pioneer settlers of this part of the country and was one of a family of ten or twelve children. It is said that in AN INNOVATION. The Gaffney Manufacturing Company to Abandon. The Check Syatem. The Gaffney Manufacturing Com- )any has decided to abandon the check system. Beginning on the 26th, next Saturday, they will paj off twice a month in cash and will hereafter isaue no checks. The pay days will be the 10th and 25th of each month. This is the old system that was in vogue before the check system was adopted. It has been str.ted that the company would, dispose of the mercimntile stock on hand and discontinue the business. This, however is not true. The store will be continued, but at tlie same time the operatives are to be paid in cash and they can use their own discretion as to where they will trade. Of course they will be expected to trade with the company store in pre ference to other stores, all things being equal. And there can certainly bo no objection to that. That puls the company in strict competition with other merchants and gives them no advantage whatever. Unless they sell just as cheap as anybody else they cannot expect the trade of the operatives. j. j>. ootjdeIvOCk:. Fire, Life, Accident, Health, Rent, Steam Boiler. Indemnity Bond. Money to Loan. It might be said that he was tbe father of Gaffney, and no fond mother ever watched her children with more interest than did he watch the growth and prosperity of this city. He was a public-spirited man in every sense of the word, and nothing seemed to please and delight him so much as the rapid progress Gaffney has made during the last few years. He, too, seemed to be specially in terested in the welfare of this news paper, and for that reason we had a warmer spot in our heart for him than we would probably have bad otherwise. 'Yet be was loved and es teemed by every one here, both old and young; not so much for his good deeds nor his deep interest in the affairs of the place, but for his own personal worth—for bis kindness and magnanimity to those in distress and for the many other sterling qualities that be possessed, which it is needless for us to name. For many years 'Squire Gaffney was a familiar figure on our streets; but for the last year or two he was too feeble to come out. It is hardly known just when the illness began which resulted in his death, as it was a gradual giving away of the vital powers that bad upheld him so long. He bad fulfilled the purposes of bis Maker and the bidden law began to fail to compensate the powers that were wasted; the tone of the thous and strings began to lose its fullness and its power and to grow weaker and weaker until at last it died away and the music was hushed for ever. The end came at 9:25 o’clock Friday night, while bis surviving children watched beside his bed, and it was as though he were merely going to sleep, so peacefully and so quietly did he pass away. He had a family of eleven children, seven of whom are still living: Mrs. A. V. Montgomery, Mrs. J. A. Nance. Mrs. R. R. WUkins, Mrs J. E. Gaines. Mrs. W. L. Johnson, J. J. Gaffney and H. M. Gaffney, of this city, and Mrs. R. A. Robertson, of Spartan* >urg. in the death of Mr. Gaffney this place has lost its oldest and most fa miliar landmark as well as a noble citizen, We fain would have kept him with us; but he had run the race that was set before him and had reached the goal, and it was meet that he should go to bis reward. The funeral took place from the First Baptist church Sunday morn ing at 9 :*J0 o’clock. The church was well filled with tbe friends of the de ceased. No other man in this sec tion has ever had auch a large con course of selfttjves to pay homage to their memory. Tiff* ik accounted for from the fact that Mr. Gaffney was one of the pioneers of this sec tion. He was an old landmark and few of the Gaffney generation ever moved far from their native heath. The connection is undoubtedly greater than that of any other family in this section of the country. After the bier bad been placed in front of the pulpit fcbp choir sang “O Bear Me Away on Your fewowy Wings”— a favorite hymn of the deceased. Rev. C. E. Robertson read the 28rd Psalm, a favorite piece of Scripture with the deceased. Mr. Robertson then related ao.me incidents In con nection with Mr. Gaffney’s life, quoting passages from the eighth chapter of Romans, also a favorite passage of scripture with the de ceased. Rev. W. If. Hodges then paid a tribute to the decp+»od * Christian citizen. The oholr aang “Let Us Pass Over the River and Rest Under the Itkade of the Tree,” after which Prof. R. O. tta^a paid a tribute to his friend an a deacon and brother. Rev. B, p. Robertson then read a verse from the 5th chapter of Job, the same verse that bad been used in the funeral service of the fa ther of the deeeaeed. Ur, Robertson chose this verse for tbe theme of bis remarks and paid a tribute to Mr. Gaffney’s manly Christian character. The choir sang “There ia jhlfe in the Cottage" aa the remains were con veyed to tbe hearse. The funeral services were coneludrd at Oakland cemetery, vbera the remains were laid to rest. The pall bearers were the following young gentleman—all grandsons of Mr. Gaffney: P. V. Gaffney, D. M. Gaines, Earnest Nance, William Johnson, T. Roland Gaines and Claude Gaffney. Th<’ Itour of a Itattle. The roar of the navy's four-point- seveu’s, their crash, their rush as they passed, the shrill whine of the sharp- uel, the barking of the howitzers, and the mechanical, regular rattle of the quick-firing Maxims, which sounded like the clicking of many mowing ma chines on a hot summer’s day, tore the air with such hideous noises that one’s skull ached from the concus- ion, and one could only be heard by shouting. But more impressive by far than this hot chorus of mighty thunder and petty hammering was the roar of the wind which was driven down into the valley beneath, and which swept up again in enormous waves of sound. It roared like a great hurricane at sea. The illusion was so complete that you expected, by lookingidown, to see the Tugela lash ing at her banks, tossing the spray hundreds of feet in the air, and bat tling with her sides of rock. It was like the roar of Niagara in a gale, and yet when you did look below not a leaf was stirring, and the Tugela was slipping forward, flat and sluggish, and in peace.—Richard Hardirg Davis, in Scribner's. A Baby’s Birth is very much like the blossom ing of a flower. Its beauty and perfection depends entirely upon the care bestowed upon Its parent. Expectant mothers should have the tenderest care. They should be spared all worry and anxiety. They should eat plenty of good nourishing food and take gentle exercises. This will go a long way toward preserv ing their health and their beauty as well as that of the little one to come. But to be absolutely sure of a short and painless labor they should use Mother’s Friend regularly during ttir months of gesta tion. Tnis is a simple liniment, which is to be applied cxternHlly. It gives t>tt'ecig>b vigor to the muscles and prevents all or the discu'iifnrtg pf preg nancy, which women used to think were absolutely necessary.
