Byprs has sold vegeta bles from her garden amounting to $118.50 up to the 1st inst. Mrs. Byars ia. an industrious woman, and others should emulate her example. A fair and carnival will be held in Shelby. N. 0., on the 7th, 8th and 9th inst. Extensive preparations have been, and are being made for the event, and it promises to be a great affair. We are indebted to little Dick Jeff eries, son of Jno. It. Jeffeties of Star farm for a mamouth beet which he kindly sent us a few days ago. It was a fine specimen and weighed six pounds. Col. and Mrs. T. B. Butler, who have been keeping house for Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Brown during their ab sence, have moved back to the city and are now boarding with Mrs. R. S. Lipscomb on Frederick street. During the Festival of the colored Odd Fellows here on the 10th and 11th inst.. there will be two games of baseball. On the 10th Gaffney will play against Spartanburg, and on the 11th the game will be between Blacks burg and Gaffney. Rev. W. P. Meadows, presiding elder of Spartanburg district, will preach in the graded school buildiug at this place Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, and will hold quarterly conference Monday at 10 o’clock in the law office of W. S. Hall, Esq. Dr. J. 1). Timmons, late of the Car olina Drug Company in Union, is now pharmacist at S. B. Crawley & Co’s drug store. Mr. Timmons is a young man of pleasing manners and genial disposition, and we hope he will make his stay in Gaffney a perma nent one. The excursion from Gaffney City last Sunday brought about 800 people to Shelby, while the Lawndale train brought about 200. They all came to hear Rev. A. C. Dixon preach and the great Tabernacle was well filled. Shelby was delighted to see them all. —Cleveland Star. On Sunday morning in the pres ence of a large crowd of admirers who had como down to witness the cere mony, Mr. John Blanton and Miss Lizzie Ellis were united in marriage by Magistrate Wm. Phillips. They are both worthy young people and have the best wishes of a host of friends. The Ladies Missionary societies within the Broad River Association are entitled to send one delegate to the centennial meeting of the associ- ation in this city from 22nd to the 25th instant. If the name is sent to Rev. \V. T. Thompson the delegate will be assigned a home during the meeting. As an evidence of the inorease of wheat growing in this section of the country, more implements for its culture are being sold here than ever bofqre. Notably among them is the hoe and dies wjicat drjllsoldby J. 0. Lipscomb of this city, which is said to be one of the best on the market for that purpose. Wednesday afternoon while a freight train on the Southern was shifting just opposite the cotton mill, two cars that were being switched jumped off the track. One car was loaded with flour and the other with coal, and the Dusks of both were con siderably broken up. Fortunately, the accident occurred on a siding and no trains were delayed on account of it. Miss Ora Thompson, of Gaffney, died Sunday. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thompson and was highly esteemed for the excel lence of her character, the purity of her life, her good influence at home and it. the neighborhood and her many kind deeds. She will be greatly missed in the circle in which she moved. Her parents have our sym pathy in this great affliction that has come to their lot.—Carolina Spartan. Tilliuun and Hickson. I Yorkville Enquire.] At Gaffney, on Monday,says August Kohn, Tillman took up his spat with the preachers and insisted on every thing he had said and reiterated that there was the “alliance,” willing or unwilling, between the barkeepers and ministers. He and Rev. F. C. Hickson bad a spat. Mr. Hickson asked whether Tillman believed the preachers nnd barkeepers were in alliance. Tillman explained and said: “You and the whiskey men are fighting together—that’s all, I say.” Mr. Hickson insisted that he opposed the sale of liquor. Tillman replied, “and so were the barkeepers for present purposes.” / Op<*iilng the Now llupUftt^hurl'll* On next Sunday morning the first service will be held in the new Bap tist church. Rev. W. M. Vines, pastor of tho first Baptist church, Asheville, Will conduct the service. Mr. Vines will remain in Gaffney a week, during which time he will con duct a meeting at tho new church. “How is Johnny getting along with his writing?” asked the fond parent. “Rapidly,” replied the teacher. “I think he is already competent to write his own excuses.” Nothing so thoroughly removes the malarial germ from the system as ITiicklyAbu Bittkks. Tho building is forty feet in width by one-hundred and seventy-five feet in length, and has a gallery in the rear end which gives it the appear ance of t wo stories—the gallery being used for the vehicle department. .The front is made of imitation gray,rough- hewn granite, set in small squares, which not only makes a substantial wall, but gives it an elegant appear ance. Inside is a nice, spacious office situated so as to command u view of the entire room. Overhead is a large skylight, so arranged with a move- able curtain that the light may he regulated as desired; and no feature has been overlooked by this enter prising firm that would add to the convenience and attractiveness of their establishment. They have added to all this and up-to-date stock of furniture, carriages nnd buggies and undertaker’s goods, and a larger and handsome emporium of the kind could not be found In a long day’s journey.
