ANOTHER MOUND IN
QAAIANO CEMETERY,
The Night of Death Darkens
Another Home.
A GOOD WOMAN GONE.
Mrn. IClertru 1 taker I.ittle 1’anneH Away
at Her Home .Sunday Morning Funeral
ServleeH Conducted at the First ItapUst
Chureh—Interment at Oakland.
Life and death are complementary
and inseparable. Tbe work of the
Builder and the work of the De
stroyer progress side by side. The
funeral cortege treads close upon the
steps of the bridal party, and mourn
ing chases mirth as the shadows of
night chase the fleeting sunbeams.
Again we must face the inevitable;
again the solemn hearse robed in its
black drapery rolls slowly along our
streets; again the nigh( of death has
Hung its grim shadows over another
happy home; again a solemn crowd
assembles in Oakland, and another
mound is raised in the city of the
dead.
These reflections are called forth
by the death of Mrs. Electra Baker
Little, which occurred at her home
Sunday morning about 7 o’clock, the
cause being typhoid fever. She had
been sick about two weeks and for
several days preceding her death she
was desperately ill, and the members
of her immediate family and the
watchers by her bedside watched her
with bated breath and trembling lips,
scarcely daring to hope for her re
covery; so when the end came Sun
day morning it was not entirely un
expected.
Death is sad at all times and in
any form, but it seems doubly so
when it takes the young mother from
her doting children, and when it ri-
moves from a happy home one upon
whom were lavished in endless pro
fusion the affections of fond and lov
ing parents and the sweetest love of
brothers and sisters, leaving an ach
ing void in their hearts which noth
ing can till, and a gloom over the
home which the sunshine of years
cannot dispel.
Mrs.‘Little was thirty-two yeais
of age —just in the noonday of life, and
her entire life had begun in the place
where it ended. 8ho was a devout
member of the Baptist church for a
number of years, and died ip full
hope of Iter reward beyond the dark
and silent river where all is peace,
and joy, and love. The highest trib
ute that our Lord could pay to his
mother was to call her “woman;"
and. in a like manner, we may speak
of Mrs. Littfe. She was too well
known here to need any comments
upon her personal characteristics,
and wo feel that we pay the highest
tribute to her memory when we say
that she was a woman in the truest
sense of t|;o word—“pure as the
prayer that oi.ildhood wafts above,”
and true us the star* above to the
noblest instincts of human nature,
and the highest principles of truth
and right ami justice.
The funeral ceremonies were con
ducted in the new Baptist church by
Rev. B. P. Robertson, assisted by
Revs. C. K. Robertson and W. H.
Hodye^, ThP body was interred at
Oakt'and ceipetery in tiio presence of
the sorrowing members of the family
and the host of weeping friends who
had assembled to pay their last sad,
hut loving tribute to tli3 one they
loved so well in life.
'j’jiP nail bearers were: W. W.
Gaffney' ii. L. Spears, T. H. Little
john, F. 6. IsLcy amj W. ft.
To the bereaved family we extend
our sincekeet h»d warmest sympa
thies, yet we know how weak gnfj in

A higher than human power can
alone console and support them un
der this heavy stroke which has de
prived them of a gentle and loving
daughter and a fond and doting
mother.

The Houthbound vestibule on the
Southern railroad, which passes here
at 10:58 a. m., ran over and killed a
colored man lust Friday at the junc
tion just below Spartanburg. It was
the same old story of trying to cross
the track in front of a moving train,
and this man paid the penalty of his
rash act by being crushed to death
beneath the wheels of the locomotive.
Some of the passengers testified the
whistle sounded a warning and that
the negro had plenty of time to get
out of the way ; but he seemed to be
confused and instead of getting out
of the danger he stepped into it.
So man’s time is so precious or his
businesH so urgent that he cannot
wait even a minute for a train to go
by, and it is astonishing that people
will take such ritks after so many
have lost their lives in just such a
manner us plated above.

The following was taken frotn the
Scranton (Fa.) Republican of tbe 15Rh
inst:
Miss Roseborough, 17 years old, was
killed by a train on the Southern road
at Blacksburg just as she had saved
the life of a little negro child.
Miss Roseborough lives in Chester,
S. C., but was visiting at Blacksburg.
She saw a little colored child that nad
toddled from its home a hundred
yards away playing, and around a
nearby curve came the Southern ves
tibule train.
The girl sprang to the rescue, run
ning toward the train. The engine was
but a few yards away, fire flying from
every wheel under the grinding press
ure of air brakes, she snatched the
child from danger but could not save
herself.
|The place where the above tragic
scene was enacted and where the he
roic young lady sacrificed her life
for that of another, was at Lewis
Station, on the Charlotte, Columbia
«fc Augusta railroad, and not at
Blacksburg, as has been stated in
several accounts of the sad accident.
Had it been at Blacksburg The
Ledger would have published a full
and complete account of it long ago;
but as it occurred so fur away, we
did no more than make casual men
tion of the occurrence.
The work of erecting a monument
to the memory of Miss Roseborough
has been begun, and such a heroic
deed and such a noble and self-sacri
ficing spirit that prompted it deserves
to be honored in so appropriate a
manner.—Ei>.]
