Tlie Gaffney baseball team, accom panied by a large contingent of root ers and admirers, went over to Muckeburg last Friday afternoon. They were given a warm and cordial reception both by the players and the good people of our sister city. The game was exciting from begin ning to end and furnished ample op portunity for each side to applaud and guy as they saw fit. Barring a few of the decisions of the umpire the game passed off quietly and without friction. The Ledger en deavors to be just and fair and In | tins instance we do not think we ex- j aggerate wiien we say “the umpire ■ did it.’ : As an instance of hisdisin- ! terestedness we will say that when ! Blacksburg would make a good play ! he would indicate his utmost ap- ^ provai by shouting for his favorite nine, while an equally good play on the part of Gaffney would elicit no comment from him whatever. The score at the end of the game stood 10 to 12 in favor of Blacksburg. It was a close game and shows how evenly matched the two teams are. The Blacksburg players are a gentle manly set of boys. They play good, square ball, and while they take all the umpire gives them they demand no more. But in Friday’s game that was enough. The umpire may have known something about the great na tional game at some period in his life but he is sadly in arrears as to how it is played in this day and time if Friday’s work is an indication. But it makes no difference with the Gaffney team. They played the best ball they knew how and were defeat ed and they accept the defeat just as gracefully" as the Blacksburg boys do. Besides, it was Blacksburg’s time to win and we know of no team we would rather see beat the Gaffney boys than the gentlemanly Blacks- burgers. The best individual playing for Gaffney in Friday’s game was done by Richardson. He played a good second, was at the bat live times and mad-e two two-base hits and three three-baggers. Hopper was In the box for Gaffney and up to the sixth inning pitched great ball. Out of eleven balls pitched in succession nine were “trikes. He did not yield a single foise on balls. Jones played his usual steady game, as did also Surratt and Little, L. Clary, E., and Clary, D., played good field and batted well. Hum phries, C., and Humphries. F., both had off days and their playing and batting was not up to the usual mark. For Blacksburg Whisonant, Alex ander, Shearer, Tripp and the two Gastons did the heat work- The hat ting of the entire Blacksburg team was unusually strong, and yet Hop per struck out five during the six in nings he pitched and Humphries struck out three in one inning. Blacksburg will come over to Gaff- nei' Saturday week to play the fourth game an.l The Ledger is assured by Manager Tripp that a atronj effort will be made by the Blacksburg boys to win the game. In case they do win each team will have a credit of two games lost and two won. The colonel commanding announces the appointment of Miss Mary Brown, of Gaffney, the daughter of as brave a soldier and as true a man as ever lived, as sponsor for the regiment at the reunion at Greenwood on Au gust 1st. She herself will appoint her maid of honor. It is hoped that the three camps composing the regiment will promptly hold meetings and elect full delega tions to the reunion, together with sponsors and maids of honor. Dele gates will please notify J. B. Park, secretary, Greenwood, S. C., of the number expecting to attend from their camp, including the ladies. This is important. It is further announced with great pleasure that Gen. C. I. Walker, the gallant commander of the S. C. Di vision, will deliver an address to our regiment at Gaffmy, or Limestone, on Saturday, August 11th. It is earnestly hoped that every veteran in the county together with the wives, sons, daughters and friends of the veterans will be present on that occasion.
