Team Coes to Mlackshurg This Afternoon.
The ball game between Greers and
Ga'Tney Wednesday afternoon at
Limestone Park was good. It was
fast and exciting. From the moment
that the first man for Gaffney went
I to the bat until the moment the last
man was put out it was intensely in
teresting. Although GalTney had a
lead of three runs at the end of the
sixth inning there was never a mo
ment when interest lagged for in the
very next inning Greers made three
runs and tied the score. These
three runs were made by an unhappy
bunchings of hits on the part cf
Greers and a number of costly errors
on the part of Gallney. In the next
inning GalTney was shut out while
Greers added two more runs and in
turn succeeded in giving Gallney an
other goose egg, thus ending the
game with a score of 7 to 5) in favor
of the Greer giarfts..
The star playing for the Greer
team was done by Green, the pitcher.
Although he had six chances to held
the ball and accepted every one he
made no error. He, however, did
not pitch the game that Richardson
did but fielded his position with
credit to himself and the team.
There is no doubt but that he saved
the game for Greers by his excellent
field work.
All the other Greer boys acquitted
themselves with credit and their con
duct oil the field was in every respect
manly.
While GalTney suffered defeat at
the hands of her antagonists she has
nothing whatever to be ashamed of.
The game was in every respect
worthy of the boys who battled so
royally to retain the good reputation
they had already achieved and they
deserve a great deal of credit. Greers
has a strong team but it is not a bit
stronger than Gaffney and it was
only by a streak of hard luck in the
latter part of the game that the game
was lost to Gaffney. There is no
telling what will happen in a ball
game.
’ Stonewall” Jones had an off day
and two wild throws to first in the
first inning enabled the Greer hoys
to cross the rubber twice. '•Stone
wall,” however, got down to work
after that and played excellent hall.
Rich was in fine form. At the end
of the game lie had a record of
eleven strike outs to Green’s seven,
which is an indication that Rich had
a great deal the better of the game
from a pitcher’s standpoint. Rich
did not yield a single base on balls,
while Green yielded six.
Sarratt played the steady game
that he always does at first. if he
would manage to get u little quicker
move on him he would develop into
an exceptionally fine player.
O’Brannon, at second, played good
hall. He made one costly error but
otherwise his playing was brilliant,
he making several sensational stops
of difficult haiL.
Hopper at short sustained his rep
utation as a fast player. Barring a
wild throw to the home plate his
playing was of the gilt edge variely
He goes after the hull as if he wuntul
it and he generally gets it. There is
no discount to be placed on Hopper’s
playing.
Little, !>., at third, is u peach.
He plays ball like u fish swimming.
In jother words he is perfectly at
homo on the diamond. Ho is fast
nd furious and generally accurate
and when he starts after one you may
depend upon his getting it if he can
Tossibiy reach it.
Gaffney's outheiu was composed of
lyars, Clary and Little, L.. and
they each one acquitted themselves
with credit. Each one caught the
Jail when jt came within reach and
Little made a difficult running catch
that elicited the applause ol the
rooter?.
Gaffney s team is what can justly
be termed a “pony” team. It is
composed of small players entirely,
except Richardson, and they make
as pretty a sight on the hall field as
one wishes to look at*. With a little
more practice they will certainly he
abU to travel in fast company.
Gaffney should be proud of them and
give them all the support they ask.
This afternoon at 11:30 the tea.n
goes over to Blacksburg on a special
train over the 8. C. & G. K. It. It. to
again cross hats with the noble
Blackshurgers. They have defeated
Blacksburg twice, but the margin in
both instances was very small in
deed, being hut opo run, and it may
bo expected that the Blacksburg
boys will do their best to turn the ta
bles this afternoon. A special coach
will bp carried along to accommodate
the ladies and their escorts and the
train will return to Gaffney after the
game, leaving Blacksburg at U :3u.
Gaffney should send over a large
crowd to cheer the boys. Hopner
will be in the bo* for Gaffney In this
game and will demonstrate the fact
tiiat ha is a pitcher as well as a
shortstop.

The com mitt co of tlireo who were
the promoters and ‘‘bunkers” of the
Fourth of July celebration have set

tion with that even, and while the
gross receipts of tiiat day were some
what less than the expenditures,
skill, everything came out in a way
satisfactory to those who were most
deeply interested and they havo no
cause for complaint. The committee
is under deep and lasting abligations
to Mr. J. A. Carroll and l)r. Lee
Davis Lodge for their kindness in
donating the grounds for the celebra

spired by hearts glowing with kind

Dr. Lodge may never derive any
pecuniary benefit from their dona

deed will he to them an ample reward
for their generosity.
