Last Friday was a great day for tho
colored people of this city and sec
tion. Althought it was the sixth of
July they were celebrating the glori
ous Fourth. This was done, not be
cause they were denied the privilege
of celebrating on the fourth, but be
cause they could got no suitable
grounds for the celebration on that
day and the grounds at Limestone
was placed at their disposal for the
sixth if they chose to use them that
dttv. Some of tho leading colored
people opposed the celebration and
as a consequence there was a split,
but the five or six hundred that turn
ed out had a great time and had just
as much fun as if the day had been
the fourth. Speeches were made by
a number of tho leaders of the race,
some of them being excellent. The
most worthy of the speeches were
those made by Dr. It. C. Cary, of
Charlotte, and Itev. D. S. Collier, of
Grover. Both of these made excel
lent speeches urging their hearers to
be temperate, virtuous and truthful,
assuring them that if they were
their condition would bo improved
and their lives happier. One fitting
sentence of Dr. Cary’s address was
this: “The best friends the colored
people have are the Southern white
people. You need not talk to mo
about emigation. This country
suits me and I do not propose to
leave it. You will lirtd mean people
in all races. You will find mean
white people, but the large majority
of them are the friends of the negro.
The great fault is with the negro
himself. He is ignorant and while
they have made great strides along
tho line of education they have not
taken advantage of the opportunities
afforded them.. Let them educate
themselves, industriously as well as
in u literary way, and they will ad
vance much more rapidly than they
have been advancing.”

The band made good music and
was liberal in its playing. Thegames
were interesting and everything pass
ed olf as quietly and peaceably as
possible could be. The behavior was
line. In fact it was the most or
derly gathering we have ever seen.
There was no drinking, notwithstand-
ing the fact that the dispensary was
open all day, no swearing and no
boisterous conduct of any descrip
tion. The day’s festivities closed
with an .outdoor festival at Limestone
clturch in tho evening, at which the
same good order was maintained.
James Miller and Rev. K. L. Beatty
deserve a great deal of credit for tho
manner in which the celebration was
gotten up and earried out. They
both worked hard and incessantly
and the fact that they had such a
crowd in tho face of tho crop condi
tions was a credit to them and show
ed that the people of their race
placed some confuience in them.
The Ledger is pleased that the cel
ebration was conducted on such a
high piano and assures tho colored
people that if they will always take
the advice given them in the speeches
delivered that (Juy tbfAt they will
never have cause to regret it.

The baseball fever is taking a good
hold on the people and Interest is in
creasing daily. The fact that Gaffney
has won two hard fought battles on
the diamond lately has aroused local
intctesi in t);p national game. To
morrow afternoon the buys will pross
bats with the Greers team at Lime
stone. The game will be a battle
royal as tho Greer? team is said to be
a strong one.
On next Friday the Gaffney team
goes over to Blacksburg to again try
conclusions with the noble Blaeks-
burgers. While the B'acksburgera
expect to give us a warm and gener
ous reception off tho diamond they
will also try to make it extra warm
on tiie diamond. They have lost two
gumes to Gaffney and intend to give
her a desperate struggle for the next.
Go out to the game tomorrow af
ternoon and watch the boys put it
on to the Greers team. Tickets to
the game will coat hut tpn cents.

The Annual B. Y. P. U. Convention
of the United States meets in Cincin
nati July 12-15. The State B. Y. P.
U. has sent President B. P. Robertson
a check to defray his expenses to the
national convention. This very gen
erous action on the part of the State
B. Y. P. U. is highly appreciated
and Mr. Robertson will leave to
night on tho midnight train for the
scene of the convi ntion.

few’of her friends handsomely last
Wednesday evening. Music was
furnished by Miss Ollie Scott, of Gaff
ney, and Miss Ella McCraw and Mr.
Jimmie Jeffries. Mr. Jeffries fur
nished violin and other music.

sherbet, fruit, etc., were served.

Episcopal Sunday school had a grand
time Sunday. The program “The
Crown of the Century,” was fully
carried out in the presence of a con
gregation that packed the house.
Each speaker acted his part well The
music was fine and up-to date. The
