The Fourth of July celebration is
assuming good shape, and (lie indica
tions are that the approaching cele
bration will be one of the best e ver
held in Gaffney. It is true that there
will be no speaker from abroad, but
a local speaker of ability will deliver
a tborl speech on that day. 'U:c

I day and with that end in view we
I expect a good deal of In ip from

IJiacksburg is going to take a deep
er interest in the- celebration than
ever before. An invitation has been
extended to her to play bail with us
on that day, and there is every reason
to believe that her ball team will
eon.o over. A number of her society
people will bo present and attend tbe
dance that night, and we hope seve
ral of her young men will take part
in the tournament. It has been de
cided to make all the prizes cusli
prizes, except the lamb and the pig
race. Every other prize will be a
casii prize. The amount of these
j prizes has not been settled on, but
the committee will make them just
as large us the finances at their dis
posal will admit. The following pro
gram, subject to change, (but if any
changes are made it will be to add
something to it) has been submitted
by t he committees:
Jlicyclo parade will form in front
of the National Bank, with decorated
wheels, at 8:d0. Two prizes will be
given—one for the best decorated
wheel, and one for the most comic
wheel.
The Heel races will take place at b
o’clock on Limestone street.
The tournament will take place at
10 o'clock on Rutledge avenue.
Reading of the Declaration of Inde
pendence will take place at Lime
stone at 11 o'clock.
The boys’ bicycle race, one-fourth
mile, will take place at ll :d ( J
This will be followed in quick suc
cession by the chasing of the lamb by
the litth girls, and the pig and boy
race. The girt who catches tbe lamb
retains if for the j r.z ■, and the boy
who catches the pigwii! be entitled
to it. There races will be confined
to boys and girls uich r 11 years of
ag.-.
Next v.ill be i wheelbarrow race, a
potato race, tl.rve-l aged race, etc.

resignation as chief of the fire depart
ment. This is not done to deliver
myself of the duties and rt sponsibili-

Having never belonged to a lire
company, and consequently having
had hut littJe experience in the work,
it is not proper that i should at tempt
to hold a position, or desire re-elec
tion to a position where experience
and knowledge are in such demand.
