mencement|week of nineteen hundred
were inaugurated at Limestone Col
lege, the occasion [being the deliver
ing of the baccalaureate sermon by
Rev. H. C. Buckholtz, oj Chester.
The beautiful auditorium was
thronged witli youth and beauty, old
age and wisdom. The program was
both beautiful and elaborate, it is
sullicient to announce that Prof.
Wade R. Brown had charge of the
musical department of the program.
The solo singing of Mrs. Brown was
up to the high standard of which she
is capable. The duet of Mrs. Brown
and Miss Carroll was a treat, while
the baritone solo and trio by Prof.
Brown, Mrs. Brown, Miss Carroll and
Miss Fort was exquisite enough to
satisfy the most exacting.
I'pon the platform was seated the
graduating class, the members of the
faculty and the ministers of the
city. The program was so arranged
as to employ the services of each
minister prese t. Mr. Buckholtz se
lected as Ins text these appropriate
and beautiful words from the book
of Esther: “And who knoweth
whether thou art come to the king
dom for such.a time us this.’' The
theme was “The duty of the hour,"
and the preacher lost no opportunity
to impress upon the young ladies of
'iit* graduating class the duties of the
hour. In a clear and forceful man
ner he pointed out to them the pos
sibilities that lay before them and
bid them grasp those opportunities.
Tin? peroration was worthy of the
man and the occasion. All in all it
was one of the most appropriate
baccalaureate sermons it has been
our pleasure to listen to itf several
years. Mr. Buckholtz has won the
love and esteem of Gallney by his
able discourses.

At 10 o’clock yesterday morning the
annual meeting of the Alumnae As
sociation of Limestone College was
called to order by the president, Miss
Mary E. McKie.
After the reading of the minutes
and the treasurer's report, the oili-
cers for the following year were
elected.
These are Mrs. Clarke Waring,
president; Miss Florence Griffith, re
cording secretary; Mrs. Edna E.
Harris, corresponding secretary;
treasurer, Miss Alma E. Turner.
The question arose as to the use of
funds. It was decided to appropriate
them for the support of the reading
r join. Then resolutions were read,
voting thanks to our retiring presi
dent for her deep interest and faith
ful and efficient services during the
past year. Our meeting was made
doubly interesting because of the
presence of several members who
were students here thirty, forty and
lifty years ago.

social ion with reminiscences of her
school days under Dr. Curtis, and
paid many beautiful tributes to his
memory.
Mrs. J. E. Harris and Mrs. Clark
Waring compared the old Limestone
with the new and made us feel, that
although their youth, in years, was
spent they were young in spirit and
enthusiasm, to upbuild the cuujG oi
their Alma Mater.
Lust (veningat 8:30 Mrs. Clark
Waring, of Columbia, delivered an
address before the alumnae associa
tion. Mrs. Waring has made quite a
reputation in the literary world and
is now actively engaged in literary
pursuits. j he address last evening
was full of interest to the friends of
Limestone and showed that its au
thor hud given her subject much ear
nest consideration.
Today is class day and will be full
of intere t to till who may desire to
attend the exercises, which begin ut
P) a. m.
Tomorrow the faculty of the college
will hold ti reception and those who
attend may indeed count themselves
fortunate.
Thursday evening at 8:5)0 the com
mencement exercises proper will take
place. Tho addressed will he deliv
ered by Muj. John W. I'owell, LL. 1).,
head of tho Bureau of American
Ethnology, Washington, 1). C. The
simple announcement of the depart
ment with which Col. I'owell is con
nect! d should be a sufficient guaran
tee for those who have no knowledge
of his ability.
A charming feature of the com*
menccmeut week exercises is the cor
dial manner in which visitors are wel
comed. Dr. Lodge warmly welcomes
every one. He extends a cordial in
vitation to everybody within reach to
attend these exercises, and t von goes
so fur as to extend a special Invita
tion to the citizens of Gaffney. In a
few n murks Sunday evening he im-
■prt sjed upon the people of Guilt ey
the fact that Limestone was their
college and that they were thrice
welcome at all the public receptions
and entertuimmiitb that took place
there.
A Hututlful Service.
The union service in the Presbyte
rian church Sunday morning was one
of tho most beautiful ever held in
Gaffney. The singing by the choir
was all that could be desired. Prof.
Johnson wielded the baton with
grace and dignity, while Prof. West-
rope’s deft fingers passed over the
keys with such precision as to bring
forth tones of the sweetest harmony.
Mrs. Westrope delighted the congre
gation with a beautiful solo, which
was rendered in such style as to bet
ter fit the worshippers for the treat
that was in store for them iater on.
The sermon was an idea! one and
the preacher, Rev. H. C. Buckholz,
of Chester, was in every sense of the
word capable of the task he had set
before him. He chose as his text
these words: “Take heed how ye
hear.” He began with a very clear,
and at the same time, entertaining
elucidation of the organ of hearing
and for forty minutes attracted the
most profound attention of his audi
ence. The sermon was commented
on by many and, by some, was pro
nounced the best that had ever been
delivered in Gaffney.
