Early Saturday inornin'' the town
was astir making preparations to go
to the Cowpens Itattlegrourul to at
tend the annual celebration, and in a
short time vehicles of every discription
loaded with all ages and conditions of

instead of $11,889.31, and the grand
total should have been $3,000.91 in
stead of $2,000.90.

the historic field. The same is true
of every neighborhood in reach of
the Battleground and by ten o’clock
a big crowd was on the field and they
were still pouring in from all quarters.
By noon the crowd was estimated at
two thousand people, all glad that
they were able to be present to do
honor to the heroes who fought on
the field.
The programme for the day was
much interfered with by the absence
of Gen. LoRoy F. Yeomans who was
expected to deliver the oration.
At half past II o’clock President
Horton called the meeting to order
and first introduced Miss Margaret
McKie of the 1900 class of Limestone
College, who had prepared an essay
on the battle. Miss McKie appeared
on the front of the platform accom
panied by i’rof. (Irillith who read hei
essay, which was a fine piece of his
toric literature, showing great j
natural ability and the fine literary i
training for which her college is fa
mous, and a knowledge of the battle
most creditable to her. Miss McKie
is a eharmirfg uaughter of Edgefield
of which the historic old county
should bo proud and of whom Chero
kee feels complimented by having
her educated in her b >rders.
Miss McKie was accompanied on
the stand by the entire class of 1900
which added much beauty and bright
ness to the occasion.
After Miss McKie’s essay Mrs.
Javous Kunbrel, about eighty jear.-
old was placed on the s'at.d. !She is
the daughter of the late Potter Enlno,
who was a Revolutionary soldier, and
as far as wo know is the only such
now living in the state. Mrs. Kim-
brel received much attention and
seemed to enjoy the occasion. She
was accompanied on tin* stai d by
her husband, who was a Confederate
soldier. Capt. II. P. Griffith in a
most patriotic and happy way toid
the audience who Mrs. Kimbrel was
and of the patriotic service of her
father.
Capt. J. \V. Carlisle of Spartanburg
then made a patriotic and encour
aging address giving much hope and
encouragement to those who were
working for the park.
After this the large crowd gathered
around their well filled baskets and
with their friends enjoyed the good
things they hud prepared for the
occasion, and then spent the after
noon in pleasant social intercourse.
The older ones talking of the good
old times and the young ones of the
good times coining when the Cow
pens Park will become a fact.
The Cowpens Memorial Association,
with \V. T. Horton president and E.
A. Trescott secretary and treasurer,
are still working for the park. It
has an option on the land and nearly
money enough to pay for it. Con
tributions are coming freely and it
will he paid for by the loth of June.

Sunday being the seventy-eight
birthday of Mrs. Mary Wh Ichel,
widow of the late William Whelchel,
her children, grand children and
great-grand children met at her
house in honor of the occasion,
which showed their filial ;■ flection for
their worthy mother. There were ten
of her children, seventy-six grand
children and fifty-four great-grand
children present and were as follows:
Samuel Whelchell five children and
six grand-children; Jane Whelchel
and Thomas Whelchel ten children
and fourteen grand-children; Sarah
Blanton nine chUdren and thirteen
grand-children; Mary Clary eleven
children and six grand-children;
Jude Clary nine children and four
grand-children; Nancy Pennington
one child; William Whelchel eight
children and three grand-children;
Joseph V. Whelchel thirteen children
and seven grand-children; Etta
Painter ten children and one grand
child.
This Whelchel family is one of the
oldest and most worthy in Cherokee
county, all engaged in farming and
are progressive and successful in
their business. We hope that the
head of this family will bo spared
many more years to rejoice with her
children us her birthdays come and
go.
