Advertisements are the wings of business. Monday opened a day fit to work, and Gaffney builders went at it with a vim. The fire alarm whistle was tested yesterday afternoon. The test was satisfactory. Rev. J. N. Isom will hold a special service at Mesopotamia next Sunday at U o’clock p. in. Interesting services were held in all the churches in the city Sunday. Large congregations attended. The county chain gang has been put to work getting Cherokee bridge in place, and will have it in shape as quick as possible. You might as well wink behind black glasses at a pretty girl as to try to do business without advertising— no one will know what you are up to. The strike of telegraphers on the Southern is still on and Mr. Rowell says the telegraphers are going to win. The Southern is still operating its trains and says it will continue to do so. quite ^ number of people went out to see broad river Sunday. The wa ters had greatly receded, but the water marks were still present and showed that the river had been higher than in many years before. We are indebted to Mr. J. W- Smith for the first strawberries of the season. They are fine speci mens of this delicious fruit and makes us, with longing appetite and acque- ous mouths, fondly anticipate the others that arc coming. The Cherokee bridge, on the Gaff ney Ferry road, stood the recent high water and much travel took place over it Sunday as the water had subsided; but Sunday night it col lapsed. The foundation of the west end abutment seemed to have been undermined, and the first passer Mon day morning found the bridge had fallen in the creek. I). C. Painter came up from his farm Monday. He says farm work is at a stand still, that seeds will do better planted when the ground gets right than if planted before the rains. But they ought to be planted as quick as possible now. He says wheat is booming and that spring oats are making a good start. An electric plant on Broad river, a 12 .'>00 spindle mill in Gaffney and a knitting mill in Blacksburg, does pretty well for Cherokee, so far this year; but this must he only a begin ning. There are other possibilities in Cherokee which must he taken advantage of. Get your money to gether. Gherokeeans. and come again. Watch Cherokee in 11)00! Daring the press of work in The Ledger office Saturday it was found tiiat the usual force was inadequate to our demands and w<* had to ask for outside help. InterestlnK Meeting at Limestone On Sunday afternoon at four o’clock a very delightful public meeting was held by the Missionary Society of Limestone College. The Society, of which Miss Ida Lansdell, the head of the Art Department of Limestone, is lady manager, is now in flourishing condition. Great interest has been shown by the young ladies in the missionary movement. At this meeting entertaining and instructive addresses were made by the Rev. C. E. Robertson, of the Presbyterian church, the Rev. W. H. Hodges, of the Methodist church and the Rev. B. P. Robertson, of the Baptist church. Miss Georgie Steedly was the pianist of the occasion and the Society rendered some very sweet sacred music. ’1 lie members of the college were greatly pleased at the presence of a number of friends from Gaffney. The people of Gaffney are always liearlily welcomed at the college. Miss Landsell is to be congratu lated upon the successful years work of the society under her charge. Big Crowd. There was perhaps tho largest crowd in the city yesterday that has been here since Christmas. About 2 o’clock p. m., a gentleman interested himself for a few moments and counted 1G8 wagons and teams without going to the wagon yards to see how many more were there. He was satisfied more than 200 were in the business part of town at 2 o’clock p. m., and that from 7>j to a 100 had already gone home. The people were hero loo, from every quarter did they come, York, Union aud Spartanburg counties in this state were represented as well as •Rutherford and Cleveland in North Carolina. The Gherokeeans were out in force which altogether made one homogeneous band of good citizens a credit to the county. WiihboutH on thtr Knullicrii aud S. C. & G. K. Hallroadx. Last Tuesday rain began falling in this section and continued steadily until Saturday morning, and reports of high creeks and rising rivers soon begun to reach the city. It was b urned .Saturday morning that there had been a washout on the Southern railroad near Thickety creek and that five freight cars had been dumped into the ditch, the engine passing safely over the break. Four of the cars were loaded with stone and lum ber and one with baled cotton cloth. The working force of the company was soon on the ground and trains began to pass about 2 o’clock Satur day afternoon. There were no trains on the S. C. k G. E. Saturday. While we were unable to learn the extent of the trouble on that road, we hear that it lias be n considerable. The creeks and rivers are reported higher than they have been in two y.-urs. A gentleman who has lived on Cherokee creek all his life says it was higher Saturday morning than i>e had ever seen it before. Broad river began to fall about noon Satur day. We have heard of no bridges being washed away in tho county. Considerable damage was done the streets in the city, and some small bridges were displaced. The damages done the S. C. k G, Iv, Railroad by the recent ruins, have all been put in shape and all trains were on time yesterday. Polk Miller. Those who braved Hie weather last Friday evening to attend the enter tainment of Mr, Folk Miller spent a most delightful hour ami s. half with the Old Dominion negro delineator. Mrs. the wife of the man who it from Whitney, and her child, now have it, and these are the only cases yet originated in Gaffney. These people are in an isolated house and are closely guarded, which we think makes any further spread of the disease improbab'e. Those who have dodged are still being hunted and vaccinated as fast as found, and the thousands who properly comprehended the situation at the start are nursing sore arms and feel immune. Business is brisk and no further trouble is apprehended. Mayor’* Court. Charges against sinners were plen tiful intte mayor’s court yesterday, but few of the sinners were on hand. Our vigilant officers had, however, had the offenders to make ample cash deposits, and the offenders prefering to part forever with the deposits to showing their faces before the bar of justice remained away, and the deposits were covered into the city exchequer. The session was quiet and uninteresting but rather a re munerative cne. Antioch Democrats. At a meeting of the Antioch Demo cratic Club, held last Saturday aftcr- ternoon at 2 o’clock, Seventy mem bers were enrolled. E. Hardin, J. A. Whisonar t and .1. B. Hambright were elected delegates to the convention which me ts on the first Monday in May a! in court house. Mr. Hum- brighl is chair nan of the delegation. Wo trust lliat all c.ubs will be as prompt, and have full delegations at the county convention. Delegates must bring credentials. A Happy Marriage. Mr. Iv zy Mostly and Miss Willie Butler, were married in tho Lime stone Street Methodist church Sun* day evening by Rev. W. 11. Hodges, as-isted by Rev. S. T. Creech. There has been few State prisoners in Cherokee jail since court in March and but two United States prisoners. All the State prisoners have been out some time and Friday tho two United States prisoners were carried to Greenville to answer to charges in tho United States court against them, thus leaving the jail empty. The United States prisoners express ed an opinion before leaving that they would probably return in a few days. They returned and will occu py thoir old quarters for the next six months.
