The Gaffney Lyceum has arranged
something more than the ordinary
oratory and entertainment than is
expected from the platform. This is
a real innovation which will be much
appreciated by the more progressive
of all communities. 8 j far the South,
being far from the eastern metropoli
tan centres, has had few opportuni
ties to see and hear the foremost lead
ers of progress. They have undeilaken
to bring on the courses the men who
are recognized as the national leadeis
of the most important movements of
the day, and first they will have the
international peace movement repre
sented by the secretary of the Amer
ican Peace Society, Dr. Benj. F. True-
blood, of Boston, who will lecture on
the “Colossal Crime of Europe.”
This comes very opportunely low, us
both the Anglo-Saxon nations are.
us many believe, unnecessarily at war
with weaker liberty-seeking ceople.
This imperial military spirit must be
educated out of the American neople
before it gets u permanent hold. Dr.
Trueblood, besides being secretary of
the Peace Society, is the editor of
• The Advocate of Peace,” and author
of that very able book, "The Federa
tion of the World.” Before being
called seven years ago to his present
position he was president for sixteen
years of colleges in Ohio ar.d Iowa.
The year of '92 lie spent in Europe
closely studying the colossal crime of
Europe, and* this is the lecture that
will be given. In the great peace
congress he represented the Amer
ican society and was one of the prin
cipal forces behind the throne of the
assembled statesmen Besides being
a director of the International Peace
Bureau at Berne, he is a member of
ihe International Law Association.
His dnte is this evening in the
Opera House.
The Weather.
After considerable rain Saturday
the wind came out from the West
late in pie afternoon and moved the
clouds out toward the East which
soon left the sky as clear as a bell.
By night the velocity of the wind was
increased and the mercury was falling
rapidly. .Sunday morning the wind
was still high and one of the coldest
days of the winter was with us. Late
Sunday afternoon the wind moderated
and the mercury rose several degrees
yesterday morning the weather had
moderated considerable but the
ground was sti'l trozen and clouds
gathered early indicating more ‘ fail
ing weather”

The books for the regi-tration of
voters for the election for Mayor and
Aldermen were closed Saturday at
three o’clock. The number register
ed footfd up 117 and if they all vote
at the election on the sixth ot-Mnrch
it will be by far the largest vote ever
cast in Gaffney at a municipal elec
tions. The following are the num
ber in each Ward: Ward 1. niiietv-
four; Wuid 2, seventy; Ward 3,
sixty-five; Ward 4, sixty-three;
Ward o, eighty-live; Ward 0, forty.

The municipal election which will
come off in Gaffney on the (>th of
March will be the first one since the
city has been laid off in wards.
There will be only one alderman
elected in each ward. Each voter
will vote in the ward in which he
lives and is registered and will only-
vote for the candidate for alderman
be wishes elected in his own ward
and for the mayor.
We publish the above as there
seems to be an impression with some
that the voter will vote for all the
aldermen as heretofore. So bear in
mind that you vote only for the
mayor and alderman from your own
ward.
We are glad that there is so little
excitement about the election and
trust they all will continue in their
present prudent course. All the can
didates have the interest and ad
vancement of Gaffney at heart and
such of them as will bo elected will
move forward with these interests
first, last and all the time in view,
and wili not lag, but will hoid Gaff
ney in the high niche she occupies at
present and push her higher when
ihe opportunity affords.
A Small Fire.
Sunday morning about three o’clock
the fire alarm was sounded which met
with a quick response. The locality
was found to be in a cabin belonging
to Mr. W. A. Doggett, and occupied
by colored people, not far in rear of
Carroll <fc Carpenter’s store. The
people went to work with a will, saved
most of the furniture and prevented
the house from being entirely con
sumed.

Colton manufactures of Denver,
Colorado, are making overturns to mill
workers in Gaffney to go to Denver to
work in cotton mills. It would be a
long trip and will not likely prove
advantagious to any of our people to
make it.
We have observed our mill people
closely and find those who have been
here longest are prosperous and with
no dispositio i to leave. When’you
have a good job hold and don't spend
money getting another that doesn’t
pay any better.

Car No. 1250 of the Swifts Kefriger-
ator Line left Chicago on the night of
the 19th inst. directed to the Whole
sale Harratt Magoess Co., of this city.
It was loaded with nwat, and came
over the Illinois Central. Seaboard
Air Line and the 8. C. A- G. E , Kail-
road and arrived in Gaffney on the23rd
inst. Making the trip in less than
four days.
This speaks well for the roads over
which it came and marks them as
buf-iness pushers.
