Msadors will hold the quarterly conference in the Metho dist church Wednesday evening at 7 :30 o’clock. Col. W. D. Camp has finished tak ing returns in different portions of the county and is again at his desk in the court house. Yesterday being cold tlere was an unusually small crowd in the city. Those who came had important busi ness and left for homo early. The many friends of Rev. W. T. Thompson will be pleased to learn that he is again able to be up and about his business after quite a se vere attact of pneumonia. A. M. Jones and family have moved from Gaffney to Union. Mr. Jones is a urghly nice man and Union is a grand old town, but it looks strange to ns for a Gaffney man to leave Gaffney to go anywhere. Good luck to him. Our worthy citizen Tom Alexander, came in yesterday and embscribed for Tho Ledger to be sent to a friend in North Carolina That is the way to encourage home enterprise and show V'ur town lo the world. Whenever The Ledger goes Gaffney is known and further information is wanted. state geologist Prof, Holmes, th of North Carolina, delivered an in teresting and instructive lecture in Gaffney a year or two ago on good roads, and we feel that Cherokee county was beneiitted by it. He lectured a few nights ago before the South Carolina legislature on the same subject, and we trust that his lecture will have a similar effect on tho state at large, and that his pres ence at the Capitol will impress on our legislators the necessity of South Carolina having a state geologist of her own. The second entertainment of the Gaffney Lyceum Association will take place Friday night. The attraction is Dr. A. W. Lamar. Dr. Lamar has during the past four years lectured before more than sixty of the leading Chautauquas, before more than thirty of the Pennsylvania Teacher’s Institutes, and before more than one hundred Lecture Course audiences, lie is often recalled lo give the same lecture by special re quest in the same place. During April and May of ’99 he has repeated his lectures many times in Philadel phia, and people go from place to place to hear the same lecture several times because of their wonderful faei- nation. lie can hold an audience at will for more than two hours, and old and young alike are sorry when he stops. He has to decline many call ers on account of his limited time for this work. The Columbus, Ohio, Dispatch has the following kind notice of “The Husband and Wife Copartnership,” which is the theme of Dr. Lamar’s lecture: “Rev. Dr. A. W. He has vis ited the Grassy Fond school, taught by Rev. A. .). Hensley; the Hick ory Grove school near Barnett Hus key’s, taught by Miss Eunice Peeler; Blue Brunch, by Mrs. Mary Smith; Goucher, by Miss Addie Brown; school near Sheriff Thomas’ farm, by Miss Bell Scott ; Lawn, by Miss Olive McKown; Mclvown’s Mountain, by Mrs. Charles Lizzie,and Ranennu, by Mr. T. G. Chalk. Mr. McArthur ex presses himself as highly pleased with the attendance, general condi tion and the highly efficient and consciencious manner in which tho teachers are doing their work, and says that some of the schools will be run seven months this year. Air. McArthur has also visited several negro schools and says lie linds tho attendance much better than before Christmas. Ho will continue his visits to the schools this week until lie lias seen them all. He thinks the county fortunate in its teachers this year, and looks for energetic and progressive methods along the vvhoic line which arc calculated to elevate the standard and generally improve the educational interest of tho county. County Uciuis. 1!ie good work done on the county roads last summer and fall has told this winter. We see lumber wagons coming in with regular summer time loads on them, and tho teams do not look like they have .been wor ried almost beyond endurance as wo have seen them in winters gone by. Let the good work go on. Cherokee is already becoming famous for her good roads and with her progressive disposition we look to see the work of permanent road building continued on an extensive scale this year. The few miles ol macadam roads already built in tin county are object lessons of their value, and no one will realiz-; lit more readily than our ever ul< rl supervisor and count y commissioners. A Generous Act. The Gaffney Manufacturing Com pany has employed Dr. Mason W. Smith as mill physician, who will practice on the mill operatives free of charge. The company will pay the bids.
