GutTney’s overflowing deep well which has been tho wander of tl o I’ie Imont since it was bored 550 feet into the earth nearly a year ago, is stiil overflowing. Since the well was bored a substantial brick power house Juts been built, boilers and engines have been placed in it, a standpipe has been built and water- mains have be<. t ] u. in, all connec tions have been made, tho power turned on and tho standpipe and mains filled with water which has been pronounced “pure” by tho pro fessor of chemistry, of Cletnso i col- lege.^ It itas been tested here very satisfuctmity b* consumers w' o glod over its purity ai d healih-giv- ing qualities and is be rg piped into ell of our magnificent colleges, schools, roiidentvs, offices, banks and business houses. This deep well water is now ready for general use, aid no people know betur than those >i Gallney how to utilize so great a boom. Three hose reels and fifteen hun dred feet of hose have been bought and have arrived in the city, and in the future, in the hands of the Gaff ney yeomanry, will make short work of both accidental and incendiary lires. Tuesday afternoon it began to pass from one to another that a test of our waterworks system would be made that afternoon. K. It. Cash, the ellicientjmanngcrcf the plant, and Alderman L. Baker, who is always foremost, when city improvements are being agitated, made or tested, were seen to be interesting them selves with tho machine. This caused the crowd to begin to gather, and soon quite a large one was in front of the court house. It in cluded the mayor, sevei’al aldermen and members of the Board of Public Works, prominent citizens and county cUlciuls, boys too numerous to mention, and representatives of The Ledger. Everything being in readiness, w ith manager Cush master of ceremonies, a fifty foot hose was attached to the hydrant in front of the couit house. Numerous volun teer nozzlemen were present, but Tom Edwards, the faithful colored employee in the power house, got first place and promptly took it. The water was turned on and with only tiic pressure from the standpipe was easily tliiOvvn over the tow’er of the courthouse. City Clerk W. Henry Boss, Chief cf Police Camp, Henry K. Osborne and others took turns at tiie nozzle and showed that when needed they would bo ellicient lire- rm n. After fully demonstrating what could be done with only pressure from the standpipe', the pumping en gine was attached and the pressure from it put the water all over the court house and in the' air above. The experiment fuily verilied Gaff ney's good sense in making the neees- sary expenditure i.i money to secure so great a boom and should induce our city official, and all our people to further effort, to the upbuilding and protection of our pretty and grow ing city. The court will be regularly conducted and tho public will have an opportunity of seeing how courts are managed. Capt. .1. l». Bell will preside as judge. Messrs. Butler, Otts and Willis will appear for the plaintiff, and Messrs. Hall, Osborne and McWhorter will represent tho defendant. A i'urrt.'ctiun, A typographical error in our last | issue made us say that Supervisor 1 Lipscomb was building “unneces sary” buildings on the parish farm, when we intended to say “necessary”* buildings. We gladly make the cor rection, not only in justice to Mr. Lipscomb, but to The Ledirer us well; for our worthy supervisor’s record as supervisor, and his known good busi ness sense, precludes the possibility of “unnecessary” work under his direction. 4- KB J , 1900.
