The Second baptist church Wed
nesday evening was the scene of one
of the prettiest church weedings that
has taken place in Gaffney recently,
the occasion being the marriage of
Pr. W. B. Settlemeyer to Miss Minnie
Fitzgerald. The church was prettily
decorated and the crowd that throng
ed it was the most dense that lias yet
been within the walls of the build
ing. It was 8:30 when Prof. T. H.
Westrope deftly touched the keys
and the strain of the wedding march
softly floated out upon the atmos
phere as Mr. 8. L. Settlemeyer and
Miss Ella Morgan entered t he church.
They were followed by Mr. Frank
Smith and Miss Bessie Fitzgerald, a
sisltr of the bride. These were fol
lowed by the bride and groom elect,
The contracting parties marched up
the aisle and took their position di
rectly in front of the altar where
Uev. J M. Bridges uttered the words
that made them man and wife. The
Rev. S. T. Creech invoked divine
blessing on the ceremony and the
bridal party h-ft the church, going to
the home of Mr. M. V. Fitzgerald,
the bride’s father. Yesterday morn
ing the newly wedded pair left on the
early morning train for North Caro
lina, where they go to visit Dr. Set-
tlemeyer’s relatives and spend their
honey moon.
The bride is a daughter of Mr. M.
V. Fitzgerald, and is a pretty young
lady of amiable disposition and many
Christian virtues.
The groom is a well known physi
cian in this city and a young man of
promise who numbers his friends by
the score. Both have the best wishes
of a multitude of friends for a safe
and happy voyage o’er matrimony’s
sea and no one will wish them any
thing but good fortune through life.

Yesterday morning about sun-up a
negro man in almost a nude condition
rapped at the home of another colored
man in the western suburbs of the
city. It was at once seen that his
clothing had been burned olf his
body and that he was badly burned
and was suffering intensely, lie was
taken in the house by the colored
man and provided with clothes and
and other comforts, lie said that
his home was in Spartanburg and
that lie was forced to camp in the
woods Wednesday night, and that
while asleep by the fire his clothes
caught on fire and inflicted the
serious burns which were on his
person.
Mayor Littlejohn was notified of
the occurrance, and fie had the un
fortunate man properly enroa for and
gave him a ticket to Spartanburg.
A trusty colored man was sent with
him to care for him.
In addition to the severe burns on
the negroes body, on the small of hit
back was a bunch of scars which
looked like they were made by shot.
While at the depot before leaving for
Spartanburg the man’s sufTerings
was great. He was recognized at
the denot by two colored men from
Spartanburg as being “little Bob
Sartor” who they sai l, spends his
time on the chuingang and dodging
the officers.

Last Sunday’s issue of the Char
lotte Observer was a model newspaper
in every respect. Besides the excel
lent news service, the well selected
mi-eeihii.v and the superb editorials,
..us filled in llie liriiii with an ar
ray of the l)"Kt advertisements that
have appeared in a southern daily in
this section of the country in a long
tim?. It contained more advertise
ments than any other North Carolina
daily paper of that date, and more
than three other North Carolina
dailies combined. They wore tersely
written and artistically display! d. and
well represented the progressive
merchants of progressive Chariotle.
Our Southern inerehants have been
slow to awake to the progres-ive idea
of tolling people through the press
what they have to sell, hut the man
ner in which the merchants of the
t^ueen City took hold of the matter
in lust Sunday’s sixteen page Ob
server is nn indication that they are
now fast learning ono of the most
essential lessons to the conducting
of a successful business. The Ob
server can truly bo classed us a great
daily.

tendered the position of editor of the
B. Y. P. II. department of the Bap
tist Courier by the publishers and
will accept the same. Messrs. Keys
end Thomas might have sifted the
State and they could not have found
a man that would have givenjthom Let
ter service than Mr. Robertson. Ho is
thoroughly familiar with tiis work,
an earnest Christian gentleman and,
withal, a man in every sense qualified
to do the work. The Ledger ex
tends congratulations to The Courier
first and tjicn to Mr. Robertson and
hopes that ho will find newspaper
work congenial and profitable.

of Supervisor of the Census George
W. Shell lias created a vacancy in the
census taking department that must
he filled at onco. The Ledgi r under
stands that its worthy friend, Col.
.las. L. Strain, of Etta Jane, Is a
candidate for the position, and it
would indeed rejoice to learn of Col.
Strain’s appointment. Ho is an
aide and painstaking man and is
well qualified to discharge the duties
of the office and the department enuht
make no mistake in appointing him.

short time our deep well water will
