Hoard has accepted n posi tion in live machine shop of the (inlT- ney Manufacturing Company. The Limestone Musical Club meets at 3:30 this afternoon ut Limestone College. The subject to be discussed is Hucndcl and his works. The Ladies Missionary Society of the First itaptist church will meet this afternoon at 3 o’clock at live res idence of Mrs. L. V'. (JatTney. A full attendance of the members is desired. Contractor L. liaker has almost completed work on the new Metho dist parsonage. When finished it will be one of the handsomest as well as most convenient dwelling houses in the city. Jones J. Darby has moved his in surance office over It. A. Jones & Co.’s store. Mr. Darby is making friends very rapidly in Galfney and will no doubt succeed in building up a good insurance business. Ground has been broken for the j foundation for the new Cherokee Foundry and Iron Works. This promises to be one of the biggest en terprises in Gaffney and will add much to the material prosperity of the place. The regular quarterly meeting of the Hoard of County Commissioners will be held in their office on Tues- ' day, January 2nd. Those who are interested in the matter will do well vo look up County Supervisor Lip scomb's notice in another column. The lire committee, Aldermen liaker, Cash and Smith, yesterday let the contract for three reel carts, fif teen hundred feet of hose and all the necessary appliances for tig!.ting tires. Soon Galfney will be well pro tected from lire, hut not any too soon. Superintendant of waterworks K. It. Casli is now engaged in putting in pipes in the ditferent dwellings that will take water from the water works. Alderman L. liaker was the first man to have water put on his premises. The wab r was turned on fur Mr. Haker Saturday. The work done by the contractors of the waterworks was of first-class order. There is scarcely a leak in the standpipe and the water mains were perfect. In most instances there is considerable leakage in the standpipe and water mains, but one would think from the way our plant works that it had been in operation several years. Constable Charley Deunnun ar rested in Sparoatburg Friday and brought to this city James Clary, a seventeen-year-old white boy, charged with horse stealing. Clary was turned over to Slier HI Thomas and lodged in jail to await a preliminary hearing. He takes his arrest very indifferently and does not in the least seemed mortified. Ucv. T. A. IMemmons, of Abbe ville, preached two very interesting sermons at the llaptist church Sun day morning and evening. Mr. IMemmons was a members of the State llaptist Convention week be fore last, and The Ledger will al ways remember him with a great deal of pleasure, and we hope to have him visit Galfney often. Cut glass and everything fine. It. A. Hawkins, one of Cherokee’s progressive planters, was in the city yesterday. liana says he does not believe that Jim Harris would tell a lie about a hog hut that he would have liked to have seen that eightet n months old hog that weighed 7.M) pounds. Runs had a pretty steep story to tell about some cotton. He says that with one peck of seed on a quarter of an acre of old and poor land, without any fertilizer, Iu gath ered 7<k) pounds of seed cotton, and then left a good deal of it in the field. The merchants of Galfney have supplied themselves with an ex traordinary large stock of well se lected Christmas goods this season and there is no good reason why any one should send out of town for Christmas presents when they can buy them from our home merchants. The Ledger firmly believes in the policy of patronizing home industry and we will not send one dollar out of town that we cun spend in town just for the sake of saying that we have ordered something from Chicago or New York. A Sorrowful Home. Miss Elsie Montgomery, daughter of Mrs. Emily Montgomery, of Trough Hhouls. died at her home Fri day of consumpton. The remains were brought to Gaffney Kunduy and interred at Limestone cemetery. A short service was conducted at the grave by Uev. W'. J. Langston, of Greenville. This is the fifth time that death has visited this home in the last few years and the cup of sorrow is almost full. The bereaved mother has the tenderest sympathies of a host of ac quaintances in this section and all hope that she may not be visited witii another sorrow in many years. I»llllii*«r-Wells. At the home of Mr. William Hus key, In this city, on Sunday, Mr. L. K. Dellinger and Miss Susan Wells, of Cherryvllle. were united in wed lock by Jtcv. W. T. Thompson. Thu happy young couple were accom panied to Gaffney l<y Mr and Mrs. Hess, of Cherry ville. The bridal party were the guests of Mrs. Agnes Wood Sunday night and returned to Cherryville yesterday morning.
