LONE BANDIT ROBS A CAR.
Southern Itm11way Train In Held Up

Branchville, S. 0., Dec. 2. —An un
known white masked man robbed a
Sonthern Express Company car near
this place on tbe Southern railway lust
night.
The train had just left the station
when Messengers Ramsey and Rhodes
were corered with two revolvers held in
the hands of the robber. One messen
ger was made to stand with his hands
over his head and the other Was com
manded to hand over the money pack
ages in the safe. Abont $1,700 was se
cured and the robber, after warning the
messengers not to put a foot outside of
the car nutil the train had got under
headway again, pulled the bell cord and
jnmped off as the train slowed up.
The condaotor saw the robber escap
ing alongside of the track, but thinking
him a tramp signaled the engineer
ahead. When the train got under head
way the messengers came out and told
their story.
The car was a combination baggage
and express car, and the door had been
opened to permit the coudnctor to reach
the baggage section, which was in the
forward end of the car. It was on ac
count of this fact that the robber was
able to enter the car.
One of the safes in the car, which es
caped the robber’s notice, contained
$8,000.
The sheriff of Dorchester, with six
men and two hounds, have boon hurried
to tho scene of the robbery and will take
up the chase.
AGUINALDO IS UNPOPULAR.
Wheeler Says the Natives Would Not
Submit to His Ktile.
Washington, Dec. 2 —General Joe
Wheeler, in a personal letter received
hero today, dated at Angeles, Luzon,
says:
"There are more than 20 different
tribes in this island and very few of
them would submit to Aguinaldo’srule
Aguiualdo and his generals would like
to govern because it would give them
greater power and many of his soldier
like the war because for the first time
in their lives they have authority to
carry a gun They live by taking what
they want from tho people. Many of
them are robbers, who rob defenseless
people of their money and sometimes
murder them.
"If we should withdraw, there would
bo frequent warfare and anarchy in the
islands and the well-to do people would
get some strong government to come
and take control.
"Aguiualdo publishes a paper, which
is filled with expressions from people of
the United States who are called anti
imperialists, and I think were it not for
these expressions tho insurrection would
be closed. ”
ADVANCE IN COAL RATES.
Kailrouds Issue Notice to Shippers ol

Atlanta, Dec. 2.—The railroads have
given notice to shippers that there will
be u general advance in coal rates nbont
Dec. 15.
The advance will be from Kentucky,
Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama mines
to Georgia points and Alabama common
points and local points except the South
Atlantic ports.
The advance will be 10 cents per ton
both on domestic and steam coal. This
is lo cents below the old rate on domes
tic coal, but an advance on the steam
coal rate.
A railroad official who was asked
abont the advance stated that the price
of coal has been advanced 50 to 75 cents
a ton over last year, and that the rail
roads think that they are entitled to
some share of the profits.
Americans Take ILiyoiiboiig.
Washington, Dec. 2—General Otis
informed tho vvar department today of
the surrender of Bayonbong in tho fol
lowing dispatch: "Report received that
Bayonbong, in province Neuva Visaya,
surrendered Nov. 28 to Lieutenant Mon
roe, Fourth cavalry, who commanded
advance scouts on Carranglau train,
consisting of 50 men Fourth cavalry and
three native scouts. Insurgent General
Canon surrendered entire force, num
bering 800 armed with Mausers and
number officers; 70 Spanish and two
American prisoners secured and proba
bly considerable insurgent property.”
New Route to Coal Fields.
OnossviLLE, Tenn., Doc. 2. — Tho
Cumberland Coal and Coke company
will commence building a line of rail
road, leaving the Tennessee Central and
Piney Creek, 10 miles oast of here, to
their coal fields on Crab Orchard moun
tain as soon as the engineer completes
tho survey. Tho other work on the
Tennessee Central is being pushed rap
idly. The viaduct over the coke ovens
at Rookwood is completed and the con
struction train now climbs tho moun
tain ti miles this side of Rock wood.
Grading constructors are working
within 5 miles of town.
Met and Elected Directors.
Montgomkuy, Ala., Deo. 2. — The
stockholders of the Alabama Midland
railway, Abbeville Sonthern railway
and Southwest Alabama Railway com
pany, all of which belong to the Plant
system, met here and elected directors
for the ensuing year. The several
boards of directors subsequently met
and elected officers. No changes of
significance were made. Tho aff airs of
the several roads were fonud to be in
an admirable condition.

Mcltao to Have u Factory.
McRae, Ga., Dec. 2.—At a meeting
of representative citizens of McRae,
plans were agreed upon looking to the
establishment of a cotton mill hero.
Thirty five thousand dollars was sub
scribed to tho enterprise and the amount
will bo raised probably to $100,000. A
committee was appointed to carry on
the work.
Acadia College Is Hurtied.
Crowley, La., Dec. 2 —Acadia col
lege, a school located here, which has
attained a reputation throughout tho
state and which was attended by over
800 pupils this session, was completely
destroyed by fire lait night. Loss on
building and furnishings $40,000; no
insurance.
Called to Charlotte.
Rev I). W. Thotnasaon, a faithful
Baptist minister of this city, has been
called to tho pastorate of the Olivet
Baptist church at Charlotte. Mr.
Thomasdon is one of the best men in
GalTney ami we will all regret to lose
him. We know, however, that Char
lotte has acharm for Mr. Thomasson
and whs not surprised to leurn that
ho hud accepted the call.
Miss Florence Thomasson has ac
cepted a school at Fodder, 8. C., and
will begin her labors at that place at
once.
