The meeting held in the court
house Tuesday night preliminary to
the organization of a volunteer fire
department, was very slimty atten
ded, when the importance of the sub
ject is considered. A. number of our
most progressive citizens and largest
property holders were conspicuous
only by their absence.
Capt. S. S. Ross was made chair
man of the meeting, and Ed. H. De-
Camp secretary. Speeches were
made by Col. T. B. Butler, Mayor
N. H. Littlejohn, Alderman L.
Baker, J. D. Jones, Dr. W. C. Ham
rick, J. A. Carroll, City Attorney H.
K. Osborne, Prof. W. S. Hall and
others. The subject was generally
discussed. Several motions were
made, carried and withdrawn. Fi
nally a motion hy Col. Butler to the
effect that the meeting request the
City Council and the Board of Public
Works to petition the people for
funds to buy apparatus, prevailed.
Prof. Hall was requested to draw up
a paper setting forth the needs of a
lire department. The following is
Prof. Hall’s paper:
There are .nsny good reasons why
a liberal response should he made to
their appeal
1st. It should be our ambition to
have our town to rank with the best.
This is a duty that pride and patriot
ism demand of us. A town, shabby
in appearance, and without those
conveniences so necessary to health,
beauty and security, commands no
respect at home or abroad.
2nd. A well organized and (quip
ped fire department is a saving in
dollars ana cents. Gaffney now ranks
as a fourth class town so far as in
surance goes. A consultation with
our most prominent insurance men
discloses the fact that the rates are
from ](;:f to T14 P or cei ‘k higher by
reason of having no fire department.
Calculate the saving on your policies
and see if it will not benefit you
financially to donate to this worthy
enterprise.
Suppose you carry no insurance.
Calculate the probabilities of total
loss, with and without a fire depart
ment, and see if you cannot wisely
invest a small sum to secure pro
tection of life and property.
ffrd. Business men are cautious
about investing where insurance is
high and protection low. It is Gaff
ney’s interest to attract people and
capital to secure that development
within the range of her oossihilities.
We wish to take and hold rank with
the best towns of our country.
4th. Whether insured or not. wo
wish to he reasonably secure from
loss hy fire. The money paid on a
policy in case of a lire may not cover
the entire loss—certainly not when a
home with its sacred memories and
associations of the past is consumed
by fire. Such a home can never he
replaced.
5th. Experience has taught us
that frequently the loss hy robbery
and vandalism exceeds the loss hy
fire. With a well organized lire de
partment this evil will be obviated.
When fire is discovered fire limits, or
danger limits, will be established at
once, and no one will be allowed
within the lines except the trusted
members of the department, who hy
their systematic work will protect
property from vandals.
Gth. A largo number of public-
spirited men in Gaffney are will'ng
to organ!** themselves for the pur
pose of systematic and efficient work
in the effort to protect your homes
and placeD of business from loss.
This good work should receive the
sympathy, aid and hearty co-opera
tion of every citizen of Gaffney.
Some of the noblest examples of per
sonal courage and sacrifice of life to
duty are recorded of firemen.
Lastly. It is to the interest of
the town and her whole citizenship
to sen that tiiis laudable enterprise
achieves the success it deserves.
The committee desires means suffi
cient to so equip the depart
ment that its services may extend to
the utmost limits of our town, there
by giving to all greater security of
life and property and that peace of
mind which accompanies the knowl
edge that our interests will ho care
fully guarded by a trained force of
men devoted to a lofty purpose.
In order to inspire confidence in
this undertaking the city council
proposes to duplicate every dollar
donated by the citizens of Gaffney.
A Mult) Stolen.
Some one stole a mule, buggy and
sliot gun from Junius Sparks, about
eight miles below the city, Wednes
day night, and got off with them and
is thought to have passed through
this city about five o’clock yesterday
morning. Mr. Sparks followed in
about two hours in pursuit, and he
was followed in a short time by
Sheriff Thomas. At this writing
nothing has been heard from them.
It is hoped that the thief will be
caught and receive the punishment
ho deserves.
KdUou'n Projecting Klnetoxcopo.
This evening at 8 o’clock at the
Graded School building A. F. Lamond
will exhibit Edison’s Projecting Ki-
netoscopo. This invention is one of
tho latest of the Wizard of Enlo
Park. It is a series of moving pic
tures, among the most interesting
being Jefferies and ' Fitzsimmons’

A 1*011 litr Young Couple Surprise Tlielr
Friends hy l lilting In Wedlock.
Wednesday morning the city was
somewhat surprised at the announce
ment that Prof. James R. Dye and
Miss Kathlene Hall had married on
tho evening before. The young
couple have been in each others com
pany a good deal of lute hut no one
gave the matter serious thought.
Miss Hall was teaching school in the
country and boarding witii Mr. W. N.
Turner. Prof. Dye has been paying
his respects to her, so on Tuesday
when he called at Mr. Turner's there
was notiiing thought of it. He had
not been there a great while when he
and M iss Hull left in a buggy and
came to Gaffney. They drove to the
Methodist parsonage and were mar
ried by Rev. Mr. Hodges. They
then drove to the home of Prof. W.
S. Hall, a brother of the bride, and
informed them of their marriage.
The fact • did not become generally
known until Wednesday morning
when the friends of the happy couple
lost no time in extending congratu
lations.
Prof. Dye is the principal of the
Gaffney Graded School. He came to
Gaffney only a few months ago from
Chester, and has won his way into
the hearts of the people, and, hy way
of parenthesis, into the heart of one
of Cherokee’s fairest maidens, by his
manly conduct and generous im
pulses
Miss Hall lias not been a resident
of this cojnt) a great while, but she
has been a frequent visitor since her
brother, Pros. W. S. Hall, came to
Gaffney several years ago, and has
won many friends hy ner amiable
disposition and Christian virtues.

CANCER IS DEADLb

Cure Found at Last.
-A
This fearful disease often first appeajj
as a mere scratch, a pimple, or lump
tho breast, too small to attract art
notice, until, in many cases, the dcadq
disease is fully developed.
Cancer can not be cured by a surgic
operation, because the disease is a virulei
poison in the blood, circulating throughout tho system, and althouc
the sore or ulcer—known as tho Cancer—may be cut away, tl
poison remains in the blood, and promptly breaks out afresh, wil
renewed violence.
The wonderful success of S. S. S. in curing obstinate, deep-seat€
blood diseases which were consider xl incurable, induced afev-’d
spairing sufferers to try it for Cancer, after exhausting tho skill
the physicians without a cure. Much to their delight S. S. S. provej
equal to tho disease and promptly effected a cure. Tho glad :
spread rapidly, and it was soon demonstfated
beyond doubt that a cure had at last been
found for deadly Cancer. Evidence has accu
mulated which is incontrovertible, of which
the following is a specimen :
“Caucer is hereditary in our family, my father, a
sister and an aunt having died from this dreadful
disease. My feelings may be imagined when the hor
rible disease made its appearance on my side. It was
a malignant Cancer, eating inwardly in such a way as
to cause great alarm. The disease seemed beyond tlie
skill of the doctors, for their treatment did no good
whatever, the Cancer growing worse all the while.
Numerous remedies wero used for it but the Cancer
grew steadily worse, until it seemed that I was doomed
to follow the others of the family, fori know how deadly Cancer is, especlall
