Mrs. Chambers begins a five
months term in stenography, free to
regular pupils, beginning next Mon
day, 27th inst.
The bowling alley is at present the
most popular resort in the city with
the young men, some of whom are
becoming experts. •
Rev. W. II. Hodges’ sermon on
“The Tongue’’ Sunday evening was
full of good practical advice and was
enjoyed by the entire congregation.
County Treasurer J. B. Jonos is be
ing kept very busy these days re
ceipting the dear people for tax
money. His office seems to be the
most popular one in the court house
at present.
Ed. Durham, one of the Ledger’s
staunch young friends from State
Line, displayed at this office yester
day two ancient Spanish coins. One
bore date of 1781, while the other
was made in 1803.
Mr. W. B. Painter, of Spartanburg
accidentally shot himself Saturday
afternoon while examining a pistol
at Mrs. Wood’s boarding house.
The ball passed through the left
thigh, inflicting a severe wound.
J. 11. Tollcson A Co., have moved
their grocery department into one of
the new store rooms that front on
Frederick street and have cut a door
through the wall so they can enter
from one store room to the other
without^oing outside.
City Census Taker VV. II. Ross has
finished taking the census for Ward
No. f>. He secured more than seven
hundred names in that ward and it is
next to the smallest ward in point of
population in the city. Make a
guess as to what the population of
the entire six wards will be.
The public is cordially invited lo
attend Thanksgiving service which
will bo held at Mesopotamia Thurs
day afternoon Nov. 30th, at 2:30
o’clock, p m. The Rev. Mr. Isom
will deliver a very appropriate ser
inon on the occasion, also the choir
will furnish some excellent music.
We hope to see a large congregation
out.
J. S. Kendrick, of Jonesville, a
brother oi our fellow townsman, Mr.
(). S. Kendrick, is thinking of mov
ing to Gaffney. We trust he will
keep in the notion until he puts it in
execution. Gaffney needs all the
citizens like Mr. Kendrick she can
muster and our arms are open to re
ceive them.
At the homo of the bride near
Blacksburg, on Sunday, Mr. Clar
ence Jones was wedded to Miss Ida
Hamrick, by J. R. Healan, Notary
Public. After the cerermony the
happy couple were taken to Blacks
burg in one of Cline it Borders’ best
turnouts, there to board the north
bound vestibule for several points in
North Carolina.
Chief of Police and Sheriff Thomas
searched the premises of Betsy An
derson Friday and found some cloth
ing belonging to Mr. and Mrs- E. L.
Eison that bad been stolen from
Florence Fernandez, who does Mr.
and Mrs. Eison’s laundry work. Betsy
will likely be arrested and bound
over to answer ^afc the next term of
criminal court.
Do not neglect to attend the meet
ing in the court house tonight to or
ganize a fire department and then
when it is organized if it does not
happen to suit you grumble about it,
but go out and assist in the orguni-
zafion and by your influence and
voice make it a better organization
than it would bo without you.
The good ladies of the Second Bap
tist church gave a hot supper Satur
day evening which was largely at
tended. During the evening there
were several cukes walked for. Ar
thur Pridmore and Walter Baker
were generally regarded as pretty
good cake walkers in this commu
nity up to Saturday night but now
Henry Phillips is the finest in town.
Mr. Phillips and Miss Whittaker won
in the cake walk. Something over
•tKK) was netted by the entertain
ment.
