Cotton is bringing a better pric
home than abroad—certainly a ih ,*
thing under the sun. When the
price of cotton in this part ot the
country rules higher than in cw
York, it means that our own nulls
are competing with one anoti ‘r n t
the cotton producers are g r■ the
full benefit. Hut for the ixstence
of the cotton mills in our midst, ino
dillerenco between the price of ec'.-
ton here and in New 'fork would
nscessarily range from ono to one
and a half cents on the pound. 1 ins
means that the cotton miih- have put
at least $30,000 during tills s.ason
into the pockets of the fanners cf
Cherokee county—that they have
paid directly in cash from $1 to -fti to
every man who lias raised : bale of
cotton.
This is worth thinking about.
And this is not ail. They have
raised the price of everything that
the farmer has to sell, from a hen
egg to a cow, from a peck of snap
beans to a wagon load of corn. 1'or
many of these things they
created a demand which never be
fore existed, which, but for them,
would not have been created tor a
generation to come, if ever. There
are farmers near Gaffney who have
sold hundreds of bushels of sweet
potatoes this full at f>0 cents a
bushel. Twenty years ago these
to get hint, might get out of the
way. That is all very pretty to talk
about, but war is war, and no amount
of refined courtesy can do much to
wards mitigating its horrors or justi
fying its existence.

The stars were peculiarly un-
propitious last week, and not only
refused to fall in accordance with
the predictions of short sighted men,
but seemed to send down from their
silent spheres some mysterious, bale
ful influences which filled the hearts
of many with unusual malignity.
Resides the Haselden-Sellers battle
in Marion, there was a tragedy en
acted in Pickens county, in which
one ‘•Dr.” James was killed and
several others were wounded. “Dr.”
James and two of his sons got into
a row with a man named Lanier at
the latter’s house, ran him from
home, followed him to his father-in-
law’s, where Lanier shot “Dr.’
James in the head and face with a
double-barrel shotgun at close range,
killing turn instantly. A woman
figures dimly in this case. At Lau
rens tin re was great excitement
caused by the report that a public
school teacher named P. B. Lock-
wood hud assaulted several of his
little girl pupils. The parents of
the pupils followed Lockwood and
would have lynched him but for the
interference of friends. In Chicago
a mar. named Corcoran killed his j
four children and closed the tragedy j
by killing himself, and all around
there was the usual number of wife
murders and other horrors. We hope
the stars will be propitiated by these
bloody sacrifices, and will send down
gentle, soothing, and more propitious
influences during the present week

would not give Gaffney for two such

had Mrs. Davis visited us oftener
than she lias recently she would have
moved here, as she acknowledged
that Gaffney was a much larger and

Last Thursday night the hangers-

1 spectacle. About 11 o’clock, Chns.
Dowdlo and Katie Mayes, two well
known colored people, stepped into
the store and informed Mr.

the pair were united in the holy
bonds ot matrimony in the most ap
proved style. The witnesses were

and Hilly Johnson. At tie* conclu

from the shock Bert Hollmun stepped
up and kissed her.
