Work on the standpipe was finished Wednesday and the painters are now giving it a coating of red paint. The contractors have begun work on Mr. J. C. Otts’ house, and the work on the new brick stables for the county will soon be finished. Work on the stack of the power house is almost complied. This stack will add not a little to the busi ness aspect of this part of the city. Mr. J. J. Gaffney has accepted a position as salesman with O. E. Wil kins it Bros., and will be glad to see all his friends there. The publice is most cordially in vited to attend the services at the First Methodist church next Sunday. Bishop Duncan will preach both morning and evening. Delegates to the State Convention should send on their names to Dr. S. B. Crawley, Gaffney, S. C., if they wish entertainment. This is an im portant matter and delegates should attend to it at once. The revenue law says 10 per cent of the legacy of $100,000 left by I). E. Converse to Converse College must be paid to the internal revenue department. This will take $10,000 out of the portion left the college. Humphries, Miss Belle Scott, Pope Scott and E. Iv. Beluo. half as good as ours, yet cost twice as much, that’s looking ^or trouble too. It isn’t safe to form an opinion on the beauties of our goods by merely judging our prices. You would be unjust to yourself as well as to us by so doing. We always have what we adver tise and it is always just as good as we advertise it to be. Nor do we describe it as all wool, when it has only a speaking acquaintance with woo!. You can depend on it that if we say it is all wool it is every thread wool; if we say it is half wool, it is just about half wool. People nowadays are quick to discover frauds and sure to stay away from the stores that practice them. We have built up a reputation by being honest with our customers and we are going to Rev. B. P. Robertson will continue his services on “An Inductive Study of God” at the Graded school build ing next Sunday morning. We throw out the challenge by continual cutting and slashing of prices in a way that is bewildering to our competitors. They wonder where we get the goods to sell at such prices when the drummers they buy their goods from are all talking advancing prices, and in many case? they have to pay more for their goods than we sell ours at. We get the goods by intelligent, close buying at the right times and at the right places and by close, cash selling in large quantities. There is no mystery about it. The old “Dick Corry building” on Limestone street, owned by J. L. Spake, which has long been a den of infamy and an eye sore to that por tion of the city, is being torn down in order to make room for a couple of new brick stores which will be erected by Mr. Spake. We hope soon to see all that block filled with handsome brick buildings. Baker has contracted with the building committee of the First Methodist church for the erection of the new parsonage on their lot in rear of Dr. J. F. Garrett’s residence. The building will be a beautiful six room cottage with a summer dining room, and will be a credit to the Methodist people of the city. Rev. B. P. Robertson requests us to state that all citizens and church es of the town and community are most cordially invited to attend all the services of the State Baptist Con vention, and also requests that all Christians of the community pray that the rich blessings of God may be with us during the convention, and that the work may redound to the glorification and upbuilding of His kingdom. The Baptist State Convention will meet in this city, beginning Wednes day night, November 20. The Bap tist Ministers' Conference will meet Tuesday night, November 28. The Convention sermon will be preached by Rev. H. B. Buchholx, of Chester or by Rev. W. T. Tate, of William- ston, bis alternate. Our people are making arrangements to entertain the delegates and many visitors in their usual style. Thi' Nation;tl Tulon Inaurani'e. Mr. Milton Reed, deputy for the State, of The National Union, a fraternal benefit society of Toledo, Ohio, is in the city in the interest of The Union. He has already enlisted a number of our best citizens and will he ready fur a local organization by the 15th inst. The National Union has some ex cellent features about it and merits the consideration of the public. The Spartanburg and Greenville papers speak in high terms of the Union, in both of which cities councils have been organized. This is the Union’s twentieth year, and it has over 900 brunches in all parts of the United States. Mr. Reed will be In the city for several weeks, and will probably bring bis family here and make this his temporary headquarters.
