Clean up your premises for the re
ception of visitors the latter part of
this month.
The authorities at Limestone are
building a house for the outside over
seer, Mr. James Scruggs.
The bill collectors were very much
in evidence on Wednesday, that be
ing the first day of the month.
County Treasurer Jones is collect
ing taxes at T. D. Littlejohn'store
today. He was at Brown’s store yes
terday.
The State fair opens Tuesday.
The railroads will sell reduced rate
tickets. Go down and meet your old
friends and enjoy yourself.
Everything is very quiet in police
circles these days. It is only about
once a week that Mayor Littlejohn is
compelled to sit in judgment on some
malcontent.
Paul V. Gaffney will go to Colum
bia next week and have an exhibit of
the product of the Gaffney Carpet
Manufacturing Co. in that city dur
ing the fair.
The current for the lighting of
the court house during the session of
the State Baptist Convention will be
furnished by the Gaffney Carpet
Manufacturing Compay.
The indications are that the water
works plant will be ready for opera
tion in a couple of weeks. This in
formation is obtained from the pipe
fitter at the power house.
Sheriff Thomas is quite lonely
these days. He has no boarders.
Of course this speaks well for the
morals of the county but it is not re
numerative for the sheriff.
The contractors have about comple
ted Mr. 0. K. Wilkin’s new house and
he is expecting to occupy it shortly.
Mr. Wilkins has one of the prettiest
as well as most convenient and most
substantial cottages in the city.
The circulation of The Ledger has
no bounds, it is now sending papers
to China and Manila and we expect
some day to send them to every civ
ilized country on the face of the
globe, that is if we live long enough.
George McGraw and family moved
to Pacolet Wednesday. We dislike
to part with such people as Mr Mc-
Graw. He has conducted himself In
such a manner since he came to Gaff
ney as to win the respect and confi
dence of our people.
We want our correspondents to
arouse themselves. They have been
derelict in their duty lately and as a
consequence this feature of the paper
has not been as full as it should be.
Let the friends of the paper bestir
themselves and keep it up to the
high standard it has attained.
Get a move on you and begin to
clean up your premises for the re
ception of the State Baptist Conven
tion. Apply the whitewash brush,
the scrub brush, the broom and the
paintbrush. .Don’t put it off until
you will be rushed so you will not
have time, but go to work at once.
Mrs. Fletcher Smith and Miss
Nellie Wood were out driving Wed
nesday evening when their vehicles
collided in front of the court house.
Both vehicles were considerably
damaged but fortunately no one was
seriously hurt. Both were driving
spirited animals and found it impos
sible to prevent the accident.
Henry Phillips, of Spartanburg,
has accepted the position as manager
of the clothing department of the
store of the Gaffney Manufacturing
Company. Mr. Phillips arrived in
the city Wednesday and al once took
up his work. Mr. Phillips will be a
welcome addition to the force of the
Company store and the social circle
of Gaffney.
Anyone having a copy of The led
ger of August 11th will confer a
favor on us if they will send it to
this office. There is a friend in
North Carolina who wants one of
that date and we do not happen to
have one on hand. Look through
your old Ledgers and see if you can
not find one of that date and send to
us.
H. C. Moore has changed from the
Henrietta Mill to the Gaffney Manu
facturing Company, of this city, and
will next week bring his family to
Gaffney. Mr. Moore has been with
the Henrietta Mills for nine years.
We trust he will find it agreeable to
remain with the Gaffney Manufac
turing Company for even a longer
period.
The little son of Mr. John D.
Phipps was seriously injured Wed
nesday morning while ut play. The
little fellow is about eight years old
and was sliding down an incline when
his leg came in contact with a sharp
substance that lacerated it terribly.
The wound was so severe as to re
quire some seven or eight stitches by
the attending physician, Dr. 8. H.
Griffith.
Prof. K. O. Sams has presented
The Ledger with a specimen of genu
ine Alabama ribbon cane which was
grown in his garden, it is a splen
did specimen and demonstrates very
clearly that it can be successfully
grown in this section. Prof. Hams is
also a successful grower of celery and
the specimens from his gardens will
compare most favorably with that
shipped here, if indeed it is not bet
ter, being more tender and fresh
