Wine of Cardui
takesaway all terrors by strengthening
the vital organs. It fits a mother for
baby’s coming. By revitalizing the
nerve centres it has brought chubby,
crowing youngsters to thousands of
weak women who feared they were
barren. It purifies, heals, regulates
and strengthens, and is good for all
women at all times. No druggist
would be without it. $i oo

Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Holmes are at

nearly all her wearing apparel in the
fire which destroyed their home Fri

result of a wagon wheel running back
on his foot while he was endeavoring
to scotch it. The injury was painful
but not serious.

The police were out iu their new
uniforms Sunday. They were a cred

appearance reflected credit upon the
city. There is no town that can boast
of a better set of ollicers than Gaff
ney.
Contractor Baker will soon be
ready to turn Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Morgan’s house over to the painters
and decorators. This will be a pretty
little house and will add to the at
tractiveness of the neighborhood in
which it is situated.
The Union Sunday School of the
Northern Section of the Broad River
Association met at Grassy Pond last
Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Prof. S.
A. Chambers, of this city, attend. The
meeting was one of the most success
ful in the history ot the association.
The duet sang by Mrs. Tbos.
West rope and Miss Edna Robertson
at the Presbyterian church Sunday
evening was the subject of much
favorable comment. Miss Robert
son’s splendid contralto voice har
monizes beautifully with Mrs. West-
rope’s soprano.
Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Hames have
one of the prettiest little cottages in
the city. They moved into it
yesterday and in a few days will be
at home to their friends. Capt. 8.
S. Ross and fuitnily will occupy the
house with Mr. and Mrs. Haines until
Capt. Ross’ dwelling, now in course
of construction, is completed.
Mr. Derbin Littlejohn, who suffer
ed a stroke of paralysis last week,
has so far recovered us to be able to
be about his place. At first it was
thought that he would not survive
the stroke but now it is believed that
he will fully recover. Mr. Littlejohn
is one of our best citizens and has
many friends who will be delighted
to receive these glad tidings.
R. H. Morse, of Charlotte, is in the
city working for God and prohibition.
Mr. Morse is regarded as a ‘‘crank”
by many people but we do not believe
there is a more conscientious Chris
tian anywhere than he is and he cun
be relied upon to say what he thinks
and to do what is right. No confi
dence imposed in him will be mis
placed.
The insurance companies were very
prompt to adjust the loss occasioned
by the burning of Mr. B. A. Holmes’
home Friday. The building belonged
to Mr. U. M. Gaffnev, and he will
receive $300 on the building. The
loss on Mr. Gaffney’s residence, fur
niture, clothing, etc, has not
been adjusted but Mr. Gaffney will
receive about $400 for his losses.
Oscar Wheat, son of Mr. Will
Wheat, a former resident of Gaffney
but now of Greenville, was found in
an unconscious condition Sunday
morning near the Southern depot.
Good Samaritans rendered assistance
and he was conveyed to the home of
his sister, Mrs. John Spencer, where
he now is. Ho received his injuries
from an attempt to alight from a
train that was moving too rapidly.
The standpipe is now over half fin
ished. The foreman of the force in
forms a Ledger representative that
he will have it complete in ten days
or two weeks if he has no bad luck
It is expected that they will be ready
to begin operations as soon as the
standpipe is finished, but the indica
lions are that there will be considera
ble hustling on the part of the other
contractors if this expectation is real
ized.
While the workmen were engagec
in rebuilding the burned bridge across
Broad river on the Southern railroac
last week a white man had the mis
fortune to fall and break his leg. We
were unable to learn his name. This
was the unfortunate man’s first at
tempt to work on a trestle and ho was
advised not to undertake it but wouU
not heed the warning. He was taken
to Blacksburg for treatment.
THE MISSIONARY RALLY.
Two Very Iiiteri‘nlliiK S«r\l»-e» on the Bve
of Mr. CTorkor'd l><-]mrtnre.
Two very interesting services were
held at the place of worship of the
First Baptist congregation Sunday,
one at 11 o’clock a. m., and the other
at 3:30 p. ni., the occasion being the
missionary rally in honor of Rov.
W. E. Crocker and wife, who will
leave for San Francisco Thursday
morning and from there will sail for
China on November Hth. At the
forenoon service Rov. E. E. Bomar,
of Aiken, Vice President of the For
eign Mission Board of the Southern
Baptist Convention for South Caro
lina, preached a most excellent ser
mon, his theme being “Witnesses
Fnto Christ.” At the afternoon ser
vice Rev. R. F. Treadway, pastor of
the Baptist church at Shelby,
preached a splendid sermon on “Co-
Workers With God.” Rev. F. C.
Hickson in his own attractive style
explained the arrangements of the
Broad River Association for the sup
port of Rev. W. E. Crocker and wife.
Mr. Crocker in a feeling and appro
priate manner made his farewell talk
to the friends that he was so soon to
leave behind. The entire service
was one of the most interesting thr.t
has been held in Gaffney for some
time. The music for the occasion
was appropriately selected and excel
lently rendered.
Ilnnk Examiner Henry,
National Bank Examiner Walter
R. Henry, of Charlotte, was in tho
city last Thursday on business. He
found the National Bank in its usual
normal condition. Mr. Henry was
once a very loud-mouthed populist
but one does not hear so much of
him since he has been provided for
at the p ! e counter. Like all poli
ticians about the only thing he
wanted was a good fat office, and now
that ho has it we suppose it is right
that he keep quiet. Notwithstand-

ng Mr. Henry it is nothing but fair
to say that he bears the reputation
of being one of the best bank ex

We venture the assertion that
there is not a town in tho Piedmont,
or anywhere else, for that matter,
that looks as new and bright ns Gaff
ney. This does not refer to the store
houses but to tho dwellings. Our
sture houses do not indicate the pro-
gressivenoss of the town but when
you go Inside they will compare most
favorably with Spartanburg and
Greenville. Of course wo know that
those two cities have finer stores
than Gaffney but wtien you consider
the size of the towns we believe Gaff
ney will eclipse them in point of
excellence of the goods carried in
stock. If our people would only
tear down some of the wooden shacks
on the main street and build pretty
store rooms to compare with our
dwellings wo would have one of the
prettiest towns in the state. Let
everybody who can use the paint
brusli before the Baptist State con
vention convenes, and those who can
not afford to use the paint brush can
use the whitewash brush the scrub
brush and the broom with good effect.
