The Ledger had the pleasure of a
visit yesterday from Mrs. R. Ann
1 Waters. Mrs. Waters has long been
i a friend of The Ledger, but, like most
good people, dues not agree with it at
times. We beg to assure her of our
most distinguished consideration and
hasten to say that we have at all
times endeavored to bo mindful of
our friends. —
L. D. Uouner, of Ravenna, was
among the progressive young Chero-
I kee planters in the city Tuesday.
James Turner spent several days
tins week at Spartanburg and other
j points on business.
Monroe Blackwood, of Star Farm,
was in the city yesterday. Monroe is
! a hard worker but he says there is no
| money in raising cotton, especially
I when the crop is short, even if it
j aoes bring T.l-c.
Frank Galfney, of Shelby, was in
the city Tuesday'. Frank had busi-
! litss to attend to and was in a terri-
| hie hurry. He says that Shelby is
j getting on somewhat of a boom and
j is likely soon to he a rival of (iaH'iiey.
Col. T. B. Butler was in attendance
i upon the Federal court which has
I bet u in session this week in Green-
| ville.
Contractor F. T. Lemaster spent
Wednesday in the city. Mr. Le-
I master at one time did business in
j GatTney and told a Ledger reporter
j that he was thinking of coming back
lit re to locate.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Landrum Brown
| and son. of Charlotte, are the guests
i of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Carpenter, on |
j Limestone avenue. Mr. and Mrs. i
i Brown have a host of friends who are j
1 always delighted to have them come i
j to GafTney .

A change is to be made in the man
agement of The Fair in this city.
Mr. McCarty, who has had charge j
since the establishment of the store'
in Gaffney, has accepted the position ,
of manager of the company store at j
Enoreo and will leave this week for
his new field of labor. Mr. Baxter
Lemmon, who made many friends !
during his stay in this city several ,
years ago, is to succeed Mr. McCarty
as manager of The Fair. Mr. Lem
mon comes from Spartanburg where !
he has been stationed since he left i
GafTney. He is a polished gentleman
and thoroughly understands his bus- i
iness. Messrs. Henry <fc Co. are to
he congratulated in securing Mr. !
Lemmon and we believe he will add j
to The Fair’s reputation for liberal ;
dealing as established by Mr. Me- .
Curty. There are a lot of people in !
this city and community who will
regret to lose Mr. McCarty, but
none will regret it more than The
Ledger. He is a whole-souled genial
Irishman and Ids sunny nature casts
a ray of brightness wherever he goes.
Will Kuce For Tin 1 I’rl/.r.
\Vill,Sarratt and Walter Clary left
Wednesday afternoon for Woodruff,
where they go to attend the fair.
Will left with the intention of taking
part in the bicycle races which took
place yesterday and today. If lie
shouldenter there will be work ahead
for the other racers, as he is one of
the very best bicycle riders in this
section of the country. We know be
will do all he can to win find Chero
kee may have no fears but what her
representative will do credit to him
self and thus honor the section he
represrnts.
llnine Kuittftl Celery.
The Ledger is indebted to its ver-
erable and respected friend, Rev. I. J.
Newberry, for an excellent specimen
of home-grown celery. For richness
of flavor and tenderness it surpasses
anything of the kind that is ever
shipped heie. Mr. Newberry is the
only person in this section who at
tempts to raise celery and the suc
cess that attends his efforts should he
sufficient inducement to some one to
undertake the culture of it here and
not have it shipped here as is the
c ise.

Cliineae Sun mid Moon.
In CTiiuti the stiu and moon are
brother anil sister. The moon is the
elder brother, who looks after his rath
er silly sister, the sun. This is exactly
the reverse of our legends, which make
the sun the day king and the gentle
moon lady of the night.
One day in China, so the legend runs,
the sun asked the moon if she couldn't
go out at night. The moon answered
very sternly: “No. Von are a young
lady, and it would be improper for you
to go out after dark.” Then the sun
said, “But the people keep looking at
me when 1 go out in the daytime.” So
the moon told her to take the golden
needles that she wore in her hair and
stick them into the eyes of people
when they stared at her. This is the
reason why no one can look at the sun
without pain.
('roan In Front ot lOnfciiim.
“One of the oddest traits in animal
nature,” said an old time Illinois Cen
tral engineer, “Is the desire of every
living thing to cross In front of the
locomotive. At first it filled me with
wonder, aud I used to lie awake nights
trying to explain it. Now it's grown
to be an old story with me.
“What goes in front of the engine?
Why. everything. Let me see! I’ve
seen snakes—and I’m a sober man,
mind you—stick up their heads to sec
what was making all the rumble along
the right of way and then deliberately
start to crawl across the rails. I've
seen many a quail spring up along the
right of way. fly along just ahead of
the engine and then shoot across in
front. Several times when I've been
running a mile a minute the engine
has struck these birds aud killed them.
In the old days 1 used to jump a deer
now and then, and the chances were
he’d cross the track every time. Cat
tle Invariably do it until they have
learned better; so do pigs and all do
mestic animals. Even chickens will
run fluttering across.
“It seems to me I’ve killed enough
animals to stock a farm and a men
agerie.’'—Chicago Inter Ocean.
