COURT OF COMMON PLEAS.

C'tifieM. •
There has been considerable in
terest manifested in the proceedings
of the Court of Common Pleas t his
week and there have been quite a
number of visitors in the city the en
tire week. Tho two most notable
cases were those of M. M. Freeman
against C. C. Hughes and J. F.
Whisonant and the case of Callie
Perry against tho Gaffney Carpet
Manufacturing Company. In the
former case the defendant was given
a verdict for *ir>0. Tho later suit is
for damages which the plaintiff
claims by reason o£tho colored water
from the vuts in the dye house of the
carpet mill running into a branch
that passes through his lands. This
case was engaging the attention of
the court yesterday and had not
been decided at tho time this article
was written. Other cases that oc
cupied tho attention of the court
during the week were :
J. L. Spake plaintiff vs. .1. H.
Itelew, Johnson Oglesby, ct. al., de
fendants. Consent verdict of *.">
damage in favor of plaintiff.
The I). F. Briggs Co., plaintiff vs.
S. B. Crawley A- Co., defendants.
Consent verdict, jury No. 1—*ldSffO

John W. Parker, plaintiff vs. the
Town of Blacksburg, defendants.
Defendants demurered to the com
plaint because it does not state facts
sufficient to constitute a cause of
action upon the grounds in the de
murer filed. After argument of
council the court ordered that the
demurer he sustained.
Blacksburg Machine A Iron Works,
plaintiff vs. Scott Bros., defendants.
Appeal from mayor's court, appeal

.Manner Pipe* l.nying Contract Let.
Work on the waterworks plant is
once more progressing in a most sat
isfactory manner. The material for
the standpipe arrived the first of the
week and has been placed on the
ground. The building of the stand
pipe will be pushed from this on
with great vigor. Mr. Thompson,
the foreman of tho force of workmen
engaged at the power house, reports
everything as progressing as nicely
as could bo expected. He bus had
some difficulty in getting a founda
tion for the reservoir, but thinks ho
will eventually be able to secure a
lirm foundation.
A largo amount of the new piping
lias arrived and has been distributed
along the thoroughfares where it is
to be laid. Mr. John C. Lipscomb has
been awarded the contract for laying
this pipe and will commence work
right away. Mr. Larkin Little will
superintend the laying of the pipe
for Mr. Lipscomb. There will he
about two miles of tho new pipe.
This will enable the Board of Public
Works to cover a good portion of the
town with pipe, thus supply ing nearly
every section with water.
An IiiccnillHry Itarn liiii-nlni;
The barn and contents belonging
to Mr. James Jolly, of Kzells, was
destroyed by an incendiary fire last
Friday morning. The fire occurred
just before day, and not only com
pletely destroyed the barn but con
sumed everything in it. One horse
and a mule, two cows, about three
thousand bundles of fodder, a wagon,
a bale of cotton and a lot of wheat, in
all about five hundred dollars worth of
property, was destroyed. Mr. Jolly
did not carry any insurance and the
loss is a particularly heavy one on
him. He is a hard working and in
dustrious man and has made what he
possesses by strict attention to bis
own affairs, and tho fullest extent of
the law should be meted tint to the
scoundrel who fired his burn if ho
should bo caught.
An Kiil<*r|irUiiii; Colored Man.
B F. Bridges is an industrious
colored farmer who lives near Gaffney
that sols an example that would ben
efit others of his race if emulated.
For years he lias been working lands
belonging to Mr. it. M. Gaffney and
Mr. J. O. Daniels. Ben was in town
Wednesday and was proudly carrying
around in bis pockets receipts for
over *200 that be bad just paid the
different people with whom he deals,
and he hud just closed a trade for a
farm of his own. We like to see
thrift and industry among the colored
people as well ott the white people,
and we note that the majority of the
industrious colored people in this
county, like Ben Bridges, are subscri
bers to The Ledger.
A Sulisl It utc for Mr. Illi-rrk.
Harry I. Kllerhe left yesterday on
the vestibule for Huntsville, Ala.,
where he goes to read a paper before
the Southern Industrial Convention
now In session in that city. Mr.
Kllerhe will read bis paper today.
Mr. J. K. Bicrt k was to go and read
the paper but ho has been detained
in Hie city on account of a law suit
and sent Mr. Kllerhe in his stead.
The paper is on the subject of frlogbt
rates and was prepared by Mr. Biorck.
It is a valuable paper and treats ex
haustively of the abuses to which
Southern manufacturers are sub
jected by railroads in the unjust dis
crimination in friegbt rates.

After Six Years of Intense
Suffering, Promptly Cured
S.
every claim
Obstinate sores and ulcers which
refuse to lioal under ordinary treat
ment soon become chronic and deep-
seated, and are a sure siign that the
Du C C C entire circulation is in a depraved condition. They
DJ Oi Oi are a severe drain upon the system, and are con
stantly sapping away the vitality. In every case the poison must
ho eliminated from the blood, and no amount of external treatment
can have any effect.
There is no uncertainty about the merits of S. S. S.
made for it is backed up strongly by convincing
testimony of those who have neon cured by it
and know of its virtues by experience.
Mr. L. J. Clark, of Orange Courthouse, Va., writes:
" For six years I had an obstinate, running ulcer on my
ankle, which at times caused mo intense suffering. I was
so disabled for a long while that I was wholly untit for
business. One of the best doctors treated me constantly
but did mo no good. I then tried various blood remedi ’s,
without the least benefit. S. S. S. was so highly recom
mended that I concluded to try it, and the effect was
wonderful. It seemed to get right at the seat of
disease and force the poison out, and I was soon
pletely cured.” Swift’s Specific—
