Misses Eloise Wilkins and Katie Hamilton are clerking for J. W. Tolleson. With two sucli charming assistants as these Mr. Tolleson should be enabled to build up a nourishing business. John (Jatlney, a colored youth, ; was arrested yesterday afternoon for i entering the house of Mrs. Alice j Sarratt and stealing a lot of house- | hold goods. He was given a hearing | this mofning before Mayor Littlejohn. Col. Sam Jefferies had the misfor tune to have one of his hands pain fully injured last week. He was work ing around his gin when his hand came in contact with the machinery and was lacerated. Mr. Jefferies has lost none of his vitality, however, and moves around with a sprightliness that would be a credit to a much younger man. There were quite a number of peo ple in the. city yesterday in attend ance upon court. This is the second week of court and on account of there j being no civil cases tried at the last ! term the docket was quite heavy, j T he criminal business was completed | last week and this week will be de- | voted to civil cases tbut are to be j tried by jury. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will (iibson died Sunday. The little waif has not enjoyed the best of health since its mother died sov- | eral weeks ago and the Architect of ! the universe has deemed it best to take it home to join mother. May the bereaved father and nil who have so tenderly cured for it be enabled by grace to say “Thy will be done.” Judge Buchanan attended services at the Presbyterian church Sunday morning and at the First Baptist church in the evening. Ho was ac companied by Clerk of the Court Jefferies on both occasions. The 1 judge expressed himself as being par- ; ticularly well pleased with the music j at both churches, and especially J Holden’s “O Kaluturis Hostia,” as rendered by Miss Minnie Carroll at the Baptist church in the evening. B. l\ Robertson will bo delighted to learn that he lias, after mature deliberation, withdrawn his resignation and has consented to serve the church with which he has been so long identified for a while | longer. Mr. Robertson’s detcr.nina- | tion is indeed a fortunate one for his ; church, especially at this particular period. He has done much to pro- j mote the interest of the church, and has been the prime factor in the building of the handsome new edifice now under course of construction and his resignation, while a distinct loss to the church at any time, would have been almost a calamity at this critical period. Cole, an aged and respected citizen of this city, died at his home last Friday night afler an illness of some time. Mr. Cole was about eighty-three years of age at the time of his death, and had been in feeble health for some time. lie was an old Confederate soldier and hud done honorable service in behalf of the cause that was dear to every South erner.
