and ready for market before Novem
ber lirst.
Elmer Folger, whose right arm
was crushed lust Saturday so badly
as to require amputation, is getting
along very nicely.
Rev. I». 1‘. Robertson desires a full
attendance at the church conference
Sunday as business of vital import
ance to the church will come up.
The October term of court for
Cherokee county will convene one
wetk from next Monday. There will
be quite a number of criminal cases
tried at this term.
Rev C. W. Boyd, the new Episco
pal minister at this place, is boarding
with Mrs. M. G. Montgomery. Mr.
Boyd is not an entire stranger to
Gaffney, having been raised in Union
county.
Contractor L. Baker commenced
work on Capi. S. 8. Ross’ new resi
dence Wednesday. This house will
add much to the attractiveness of
the neighborhood in which it is being
erected.
An inspiring sight to witness is the
passing of hundreds of boys and girls
to and from the Graded School each
day. Superintendent Sams expects
to enroll u good many more before
the session closes.
The Cherokee Drug Co., has made
a pretty addition to their store fix
tures in the shape of a show case and
counter combined. For convenience
in displaying goods and beauty of
appearance it cannot be surpassed in
the state.
Work on the new First Baptist
church building is progressing very
web, but Contractor Cooper will have
to get a move on himself if he expects
to complete it in time for the State
Baptist convention, which meets in
this city the luiler part of November.
.Miss Hattie Hall Henry, died Tues
day morning at the homo of her
mother in Greenville. Miss Henry
was practically an invalid all her lif?,
never having enjoyed robust health.
She was a sister of Mr. Chus. II.
Henry, one of the proprietors of The
Fair.

C., is visiting her grandmother, Mrs.
E. P. Woody. Miss Lillie is the
brigtit little daughter of our former
townsman, R. M. Woody.
Miss Effie Hopper, left Wednesday
morning for Lenoir after spending
several weeks witli friends and rela
tives. We trust it will not be long
before Gaffney can again claim her
for one of its pwn.
Hon. Wm. Jefferies, of Home, was
in the city yesterday. v Mr. Jefferies
is always one of the very busiest
men in Cherokee and his large busi
ness interests constantly keep him
on the move.
J. 8. 8mith, a hustling Cherokee
planter who lives near the Spartan
burg line, was in the city Tuesday
with cotton. Mr. Smith is one of

ated supporters.
Wm. Nance, of Grindall Shoals,
was among the hustling planters in
the city Wednesday.
F. G. Stacy spent several days this
week in Alabama on business.
B. G. L. Pettit, of Ravenua, one of
Cherokee’s substantial planters, was
among the visitors in the city yes
terday.
J. J. Gibbons, who resides near Hie
North Carolina line in Cherokee
township, was in the city Tuesday
and Wednesday. Mr. Gibbons always
receives a warm welcome to Gaffney.
Postmaster J. N. Miller, of Island
Ford, Rutherford county, was in the
city yesterday. Mr. Miller was here

J. Cieve Robbs, of Grassy Pond,
was in the city Wednesday.
Thos. B. Butler is attending court
at Dallas, N. C., where he is council
in a murder case.
John E. Jefferies, who has been

the lower part of the county for sev
eral days, returned to the city yes
terday.
Allen Jefferies, of Star Farm, was
in the city Wednesday shaking hands
with his many friends.
Miss Lalla Black a charming young
lady from Blacksburg, spent Wednes

John F. Jimmerson, of Bolinsville,
was a pleasant caller at this ofiice

Messrs. J. N. and N. Lipscomb in
the Victor Oil Co., arrived in the city

Rev. W. P. Witsell, well and favor
ably known in this city, stopped over
here for a few hours yesterday to shake
hands with his many friends. He
was on his way to Greenwood, where
ho goes to take charge of the Episco
pal church in that city. Mr. Witsell
lias just completed a two years course
of study in New York.

A parrot, in a remote English
country district, escaped from its
cage and settled on the roof of a
laborer’s cottage. When it had been
there a little time, the laborer caught
light of it. He had never seen such
a thing before, and alter much gazing
in admiration at the bird with its
curious beak and beautiful plumage
he fetched a ladder and climbed up <t
with a view of securing so grout a
prize. When his head reached the
level of the top of the roof, tho parrot
Hopped a wing at him and said,
“What dy’e want?”
Very much taken buck, the laborer
politely touched his cap and replied,
“I beg your pardon sir; I thought
you were a bird !”

cial statement that the cabinet only
decided to pardon Dreyfus today, and
that the pardon would not be promul
gated for several days, it is a fact
that the pardon was signed late this
a'ternoon and is effective at once.
It is expected Dreyfus will be taken
from Rennes tonight and liberated.
He will be escorted whenever he may
wish to go.
