The pastor will baptize a number of now members at Coucher, in the inornig of the third Sunday in this month. Coroner Yinesott is rejoicing at the arrival of a ten pound hoy at his house. May he live long anti he an honor to and honored by his country. J. Eh Jefferies is building a store house and large lumber ware house on his lot adjoining the S. C. A (J. Extension depot on Frederick street. Rev. F. Q. Hickson, is carrying on a protracted meeting at Arrowwoo.l church this week. Mr. Hickson is a hard and earnest worker in the vine yard. The army worm has about disap peared. They did considerable damage but not so much as was feared. They, however.destroyed one whole field of young corn for Mr. Robt Clark. The seed house and the hull house of the Victor Cotton Oil Mill are now complete, and the brick work of the main mill building will he finished this week. The machinery for llie mill is beginning to arrive. L. Raker has the contract to build a handsome cottage on Logan street for Mr. Boyd T. Hames. Material is being placed on the ground for the building and with the work in Baker’s hands Mr. Haines will soon have his house. The Morgan Iron works of Spar tanburg have a force of men at work, putting in the steam heating aparatus at Limestone College. The system of heaters will permeate the whole building and keep it at an even tem perature. Prof. Wade It. Brown, who will be in charge of the musical department of Limestone College, will leave Win- thrope College about the first of Sep tember and move to Gaffney to be ready for his duties when Limestone opens. The South Carolina and Georgia Extension is building a spur from its track on this side of Broad river to the site of the old Cherokee iron Works in order to ship a lot of old material that was left at the old works years ago, and iron ore from the nearby mines. An Oltl Knife anil Itackltllinl. L'ncle Alfred Pritchard, now seven ty three years old, of Grassy Pond, one of Cherokee’s best citizens and an old Confederate soldier, is perhaps the owener of the oldest back-band and the oldest pocket knife in the county. The back-band he made out of harness leather w hen he was eighteen years old, and has used it himself every year since except when he was in the Confederate army, and it was used on his farm while he was a soldier. The back-bund is iifty-live years old and is good for many years of service yet. The pocket knife he carried into the Confederate war when it lirst began, carried and used it through the war and up to a short while ago when he laid it aside, it being too badly worn for future use. tittuerotiM. The Gaffney Manufacturing com pany lias notified the secretary of war that it will contribute li.OOO yards of shirting to the Puerto Rico storm sufferers. He only spent a few hours and expressed himself as highly pleased witli the condition of the county offices In which lie had busi ness. The General noticed the rapid im provements of the city, and took a drink of “natures nectar’’ from Gaff ney’s flowing well. Ui'iitliof Mm. Alll'ti. Mrs. Rachel Allen, mother of our esteemed fellow citizen, Mr. Win. Al len, died at the residence of her son in this city on Wednesday after a long illness. Mrs. Allen was in her sixty-sixth year. She was a native of Ireland and came to America when young and settled down ar.d married in Philadelphia, Pa., where she lived until about a year ago when she, with her son, moved to Gaffney. She was i life long Presby terian of the strictest sect and her faith sustained and comforted her during her long illness. The funeral services were con ducted yesterday at the grave by Rev. W. H. Hodges, in the absence of her pastor, and her remains were buried in Limestone cemetery in the presence of a large gathering of friends whose sympathies go out to her bereaved son. The pall-bearers were W. G. Roes, /. A. Robertson, C. C. Humphries and Forest Hum phries. M<n ing Alu'tiil. The stockholders of the Cherokee Foundry and Machine Works Com pany met Wednesday and elected the following directors: F. G. Htacy, T. H. Littlejohn, L. Y. Randall, J. I). Templeton and J. R. Killian. At a subsequent meetingof the di rectors tliey elected T. 11. Littlejohn, president; Ii. Y. Randall, vice-presi dent; L. 1). Snead, secretary and treasurer, and L. V. Randall general manager. This company will go to work at once and secure a suitable location and build all necessary buildings 'for its works and put in the lalest and most approved machinery. The of ficers are all practical men who have made with their own hands the money they have invested and whose names means success with any en terprise with which they are con nected. On Tuesday Coroner Vinesett was summoned hy telegraph to go to Ravenna to hold an inquest over the dead body of hilly 1’etty, a colored J girl about fifteen years old, who had died suddenly while sitting in a chair. Coroner Vinesett with his usual promptness wont to Ravenna as soon as possible and summoned a jury and called in Dr. Henry Tate to make an examination of the body, who after careful examination stated on his oath that Lilly i’etty died from heart failure. A number of other witnesses were sworn whose testimony only roh ted to incidents relative to her death. After the testimony Coroner Vine- sett charged the jury as to its duties. The jury then returned and rendered the following verdict: We the jury find that Lilly Betty came to her death from heart failure, and that no living person or persons are responsible for Hie death of the said Lilly Petty.
