Charlotte is even ahead of (JalTney in some respects hut we must all re member that Charlotte was a town more than one hundred years before Gaffney’s Old Field was put down on the maps. We like to take a day off now and then and go to Charlotte. One gets relief from the buzz of swiftly revolving machinery, the noise of the saw and the hammer and the smell of fresh paint and the din occasioned by workmen building a city, for Char lotte has been built, whil 'Jatlney is in the process of.building. We bad not been long in the city before a friend asked ns to go to the city hall and witness a marriage re- mony. The contracting couple v ere two long, lank and hungry looking dividuals of ebony hue and each pos sessed a mouth of ivory that many a person might envy. Their teeth were the only pretty things about them. This couple had decided to marry, so a messenger was dispatched for Col. 1) (Jr. .Maxwell, the genial and jolly chief magistrate of Charlotte, while a courier was sent out to announce tho fact that the celebrated ‘•(’oon- |)og Ceremony’’ was about to be pronounced. At the city hall Mayor McCall and Chief Orr and a number of others had the prospective groom surrounded in one room, and were plying him with all manner of ques tions,while in the adjoining room was the bride elect, seated on a bench wit h one lone female companion who had come under tho ban of the law that morning and was waiting for Officer Cugsbill to escort her to the county hotel. Finally ’Squire Max well arrived. Hemet the bride and groom in the anti-room, gave them a few instructions and the wedding parly marched in to the Mayor’s court room. Chief Orr acted as best man. There were no attendants upon the bride. The Mayor’s desk hud been removed from the rostrum and the couple were stationed upon the plat form while Chief Orr occupied a seat in the background. Mayor McCall, clean shaven and blushing like a shy maid en, seemed tickled almost to death ns he listened to the ’Squire. Rotund Electrician 15. .1. Maxwell is and has been for years Initod States Commis sioner and Magistrate at Charlotte. .Judging from his appearance no one would ever believe that he was old enough to have fought in the Con federate army. He enjoys the esteem and confideneeof all whoknow him and likes a joke better than almost any one else. His ceremony is legal in every sense of the word. He has married more couples perhaps tban any other man in North Carolina. He seldom uses this ceremony, how ever. He possesses a quiet, refined and dignified air and has a lofty regard for decorum and a keen percep tion of humor. Nt‘xv lOntfi’itrirti in CitlTiicy. The Secretary of State has granted a commission to the Cherokee Foun dry and Machine Works, which will he located in (JalTney. Tho corporat ors are 1.. V. Randall, T. H. Little john and J. 1). Templeton, and the capital stock is $5,000. The stock has all been taken and the company will elect its officers next Monday. The corporators are young men of energy and fine business qualifica tions, Mr. Randall being a practical machinist. They have several loca tions in the city in view, and will soon decide on one and begin the erection of necessary buildings which will be equipped with modern ma chinery, and in every way titled up in first-class style.
