J. 8. Spencer brought in an open boll of cotton Saturday that he dates back to Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Turner are rejoicing over the arrival of a bright baby girl at their home. May the little one grow to happy womanhood and, prosper. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. McAllister are happy in the possession of a new heir at their home. The new comer is a bright little gentleman and too good looking to resemble his father. The third nine of the up town boys and the third nine of the down town boys played a game of ball last Fri day on Hickory Hill, which resulted to a score of 7 to 3 in favor of the up town boys. Rev. M. F. Sample conducted an interesting protracted meeting last week at Abingdon creek church. We learn that much interest was manifested and that the meeting was not wanting in good results, Capt. Coke Duncan, chiej of police of Blacksburg, brought a prisoner to the city and placed him in jail Sat urday charged with assault and bat tery, to await trial at the next term of the court of general sessions. Rev. W. T. Thompson attended the protracted meeting at Ararat Sunday. He reports Rev. W. E. Crocker as having done a good work at the meeting which has resulted in several acquisitions to the church. H. M. Maner, of Star Farm, and Jesse Wright and W. F. Kennedy, of Mercer, presented The Ledger with the lirst open boles of cotton Friday. Maner was about two hours ahead but Messrs. Wright and Kennedy had the best specimens. J F. Morse, of Gowdeyivlle, was in the city yesterday. Mr. Morse re ports that his four-legged chicken which was hatched out about May 1st and which was reported in The Ledger at that time ie still alive and in a flourishing condition, Rev. F. C. Hickson, the pastor, as sisted by Rev. F. 0. S. Curtis is carrying on a protracted meeting at Providence church this week. Messrs. Hickson and Curtis, are strong, earn est preachres and we look for much good as the result of their work. We note with pleasure that our friend and fellow citizen J. I. Sarratt is now engaged in putting a large ad dition to the rear of his already com modious store house. This addition will be used principally for wagons, buggies and farmers’ supplies gen erally. J. I. does not blow a great dear hut his steady expansion is an indication of his success in business. T. A. Phillips, a young white man of this county was arrested this rooming by Deputy Marshal, Harp F. Floyd, assisted by Bob Gibson, un der a warrant issued in May, 1898, by Commissioner Boll, charging him witlPmaking and issuing counter feit money. The young man was committed to jail to await a prelim inary examination before Commis sioner Bell. The concert given at the Graded School hall Friday evening was artistic in every respect and deserved a large attendance. Mr. Klenk is a master of violin and the pieces re- dered especially attractive. Mr. Cummings was in good voice and he is ever popular with the Gaffney public. Ine rest of the program by our home talent was rendered with taste and skill. E. Y. Meetz, one of our suburban farmers, was in to see us Saturday. Mr. .Meetz is an intensive farmer and his present crop is an evidence of the efficacy of his methods. He believes in and practices deep and thorough preparation ;befoe planting and says he has twelve acres of upland com that ho would not exchange for many fields of four times its area. He is equally successful with all other crops. If Mr. Meetz’s methods suc ceed nuder his hands they will be equa lly successful if adopted by others and point to him as a farmer for other farmers to watch. Mayor Littlejohn had a case before him Saturday that created considerable interest. A young white man was charged with violation of an ordinance of the city which prohibits the sale of spiritous liquors in the corporate limits. The defendant was represented by Col. T. B. ^Butler and the city by City Attorney* J. C. Jefferies. The defendant was con victed but Mr. Butler asked for a new trial on account of newly dis covered evidence, which was granted. At the second trial, which occurred yesterday the defendant was acquit ted. We hope that in the future the young man will keep his sur roundings such that they will place him above suspecion. An “At Home." The Misses Littlejohn entertained a number of their friends at a de lightful “At Home” last Friday evening in honor of Miss Nelson Garlington, of Spartanburg, who is spending a few days with them. The occasion was a most pleasant one. The Misses Littlejohn are most charming hostesses, as all who know them agree. _ Mnlrftdny. As will be seen from the statement of the Board of Public Works pub lished in another column the funds at the disposal of that body for water works is inadequate to meet the de mands for a perfect water works plant. It is generally known that the citizens will bo asked to votes an additional bond issue of .$10,000, $5,000 of which will be used to com plete the water works plant. As stated by the board in their report when the bond issue’was authorized the amount voted would have been adequate to the demand for a town of the size of Gaffney at that time but we must remember that events have transpired in the interim that neces sitates either an inferior plant or an increased appropriation. These events were an increase in the price of water works material such us pipes, hydrants, etc., an increase in population of about 2,000 since the bonds were voted, and the unavoida ble sickness of several months of Mr. Mlnsell, tho engineer, which neces sarily caused a delay in the letting of the contracts. Now the question is: Are the people going to allow these unavoidable delays and the increase in the price of material to interfere with a complete water w’orks system, or, are they coming to the front and support the Board of Public Works in their efforts to give us a complete system. The Ledger _is inclined to believe that there should be no half way ground. Those to whom water is already assured should be mag- namimous enough to vote the in crease of bonds for the benefit those who will not get water and fire pro tection in case the bonds are not is sued. We are assured that there connot be any increase in taxes be cause property, is now being taxed to the limit in Gaffney. Then again it will take just as much labor to sup ply water for a small system as it will for a system large enough to meet the requirements o? Gaffney. If the plant is increased the city will receive that much more revenue and thus enable them to meet tho pay ment of the bonds time much easier. The city should operate its own electric light plant by all means. It will he a paying investment to expend $5,000 on the elec tric light plant. The rent for in candescent lights for private pur poses and the saving on the arc lights for street purposes will more than pay the expense of running the plant and the interest on the money ex pended. So to look at the matter from a purely business stand point the city will bo the gainer by the issue of the bonds—hence The Led ger is in favor of it. From a selfish standpoint we are against the issue but in matters of public interest, where the welfare of the community is at stake, we lay aside our personal feeling and do what we think is for the best interest of the whole people. The man who lives for self alone has little to live for in this world, so let us all pull to- gethsr for our common good and live for the benefit of one another. The Army WorniH. There was a big crowd in the city Saturday, many were complaining of the army worms on their farms. The most we hear of them is from east of Broad river and farms near the river on tho west side. Farmers say that they are eating all the grass they come in contact with and in many ^instances are eating young corn planted on wheat lands. Tho damage to this time has not been great but our friends are fear ful if they continue their ravages they will attact tho older corn and cotton plants. BECOMING A MOTHER. Patrick one of the most upright young men in the coun ty, died Sunday night at the residence of his brother. Mr. Frank Patrick, in this city, and will be buried today at the Patrick grave yard, near Mercer, in this county. Robert C. Patrick was n member of that large, old and sturdy family of Patricks who have lived in the Union part of what is now Cherokee county for a century. He was the youngest son of the late Isaac Patrick, Sr., and was possessed of all the good quali ties which have marked his family for a century, and pointed its men and women out as models of Christ ianity and good citizenship. A Present. The Ledger is under obligations to its old friend, Mr. Thompson Hum phries, the champion watermelon grower, of Cherokee, for one of his mammoth and delicious melons, which weighed fifty-seven pounds and which Mr. Humphries presented to us Saturday.
