Hodge is night watchman for the Limestone Limo Company. The tinners aro at work putting tho roof on tho Victor Cotton Oil Mill. T. N. Creech, is building a pretty cottage on one of his Cherokee avenue lots. Some of the buildings being erected in the city are being retarded on ac count of material. There will be a call meeting of the Board of County Commissioner Mon day the 7th inst. Material for the pumping station of the city water works is being placed on the ground. Light lumber wagons come in from one mill near Kzells Wednesday, and four from another near by. The Quarterly Conference of Calf- ney circuit will meet at (Jethsemuno on to-morrow at 10:30 a. in. R. K. McCraw is having some re pairs made on his dwelling, corner of Montgomery and Betty streets. The many friends of Master Sam Fort, will be glad to learn that he is recovering from his recent severe ill ness. The recent rains makes this an op portune time to take the weeds from among the grass on lawns and along the ■ fences. Mr. J. IL Killian, boss carder at the cot tot* mill is having a pretty fence built around his handsome new home on Cherokee avenue. Quite a number of the good people of Mercer attended the Lurrying of Miss Montgomery at Limestone Cem- etury Tuesday afternoon. The place for the foundations of tho standpipe for,the city water,works has been excavated and material for the foundation is being placed on the ground. Lem Blanton, one of Cherokee’s champion farmers, is building a store house on one of his city lots east of the cotton mill. Of course it will bo for rent. The branch running from near Victoria avenue down across Buford street into Peoples creek is becoming popular as a place for locating machinery plants. The quicker you sow your turnip seed now, the better, 'lake this chance for an early crop then your chances for a lute one will he with the early one assured. Wo hope the wheat growers of Cherokee will meet in tho court house on next Monday and send delegates from Cherokee to the wheat growers convention in Greenwood. The crowds have not heen great in the city this week. The farmers are putting in some good farm work made necessary by the recent rains. Che rokee farmers will get there. Mrs. Charles Oats, a most estimable lady died at Cherokee Bulls on the 30th ult., and was buried at Long Creek, N. C. She leaves a husband and two children. Mrs. Oats had been in bad health for a long time. W. T. Humphries has about finished his handsome now residence out on his farm three miles north of tlie city. It occupies a beautiful site and the building is right up with tlie times in architecture and workman ship. On account of the revival at tho First Methodest church the congre gation of the First Baptist church will hold no preaching services next Sunday and Sunday week. The Sun day School services will take place as usual. There was a game of ball at Lime stone lust Saturday between Corinth and tho Carpet Mill, |in which Corinth came out victorious by a score of 21 to L There will be an other game tomorrow between the same teams. There is quite an inllux of negro laborers to tlie city to get work with the water works contractors. We hope they will get work that will give them steady employment, for to be from home without steady em ployment will work them a hardship. The mass meeting in the Interest of education which was to have been held at the Graded School building this evening has been postponed un til Thursday evening, the 2lt!i inst., on account of tho inability of Dr. Lee Davis Lodge, who is to be the princi pal speaker, to bo there. One of the teachers who attended the examination of teachers Wednes day brought dinner along and left it in the buggy. When dinner time arrived the buggy was intact but tho dinner was gone. Chief Camp inves tigated but failed to lind the dinner or tlie one who had appropriated it. John M. Porter, son of Mr. K, K. Porter has accepted a position with the South Carolina and Georgia Kx- tention Ituilrond. Ho attended the summer school at GulTney and went direct to his work. He is one of Clierokee’s best young men and will be a valuable accession to the road force. About twenty five applicants, were before the county hoard of examiners Wednesday, applying for certificates to enable them to teach in tho public schools. Hickson has been con ducting an interesting meetings at Gouclier church this week. He has heen assited by Rev. F. (). S. Curtis. Mr. Hickson and Mr. Curtis are both strong preachers of well known piety and aro doing a good and appreciated work at Gouclier among a good and appreciative people. The county summer school for teachers closed its exercises Tu< rday. Profs. Blake and Townes wont to their homes in Spartanburg and Greenville. Both of them honored The Ledger with a call before leaving and express ed themselves as pleased with Galf- ney and the character of Cherokee county teachers and the interest they took in the school. Genial Arthur Bridmoro is jumping ihe counter at the Company Store. A Ledger man was down there the other day and he was “marking up” shoes. When he had finished mark ing an outsider couldn’t fell whether they were pencil marks or a lien had walked across the box after scratch ing in a pile of cinders. But Arthur gits thar jist the same. Cotton, Uncle Dick Jolly was in to see us day before yesterday. He was in his usual jolly humor and talked ex uberantly of the prospects of a line crop. Uncle Dick boasts of one stalk on which there were thirty-six bolls and sixty-six squares and there were seventeen squares on the ground. 'I’his cotton is what is known as the King improved variety. Aunt Cindy Sarrutt, who lives on J. I. Sarratt’s farm, says Unde Dick’s cotton is “not in it,” as she has a stalk with 1 7‘> bolls and trot so tired counting that she quit before she finished. Her cotton is not of any remarkable variety, either. Till* Protn»<*t«'il Mf«*tin(j. Rev. W. If. Hodges will begin a series of meeting in the Grenard Street Methodist Church next Sun day. Mr. Hodges is an earnest worker and a fine preacher who is highly appreciated by all our people. He will he assisted at the coming meeting by Rev. M. L. Carlisle whose piety and ability is well known in Gaffney. With these able preachers and Hie earnest workersjof the Methodist church assisting them in every proper manner we look for an inter esting and profitable meeting. A Biff Boiler. The large boiler that is to furnish steam for heating purposes at I.ime stone College was taken down yester day morning. It is a pretty good sized boiler for exclusive heating pur pose, being about one hundred horse power and will furnish ample heat for the entire building. Mayor Littlejohn bad a 1th of July offender before him Tuesday charged with retailing whiskey contrary to law. The evidence was conclusive and his honor gave the offender tho option of paying a fine of $100 or serving thirty days on the county chain gang. After a little reflection he took the days. Wednesday morning his honor had a case of “drunk and disorderly” before him. The charges were not sustained and the young man was released. More \\ :itcr Work* Money. A petition is being circulated in the city asking the city council to order an election to authorize the city au thorities to issue ten thousand dollars of five per cent bonds to supplement the eighteen already issued for the city water works, and to improve the electric light plant. The petition is being readily signed and when the election is ordered the bonds should he voted. A \ iKitor. Kditor W. F. Marshall, of Tlie Gas tonia Gazette, run over to Galfney yes terday and visited several points of interest In the city, and paid I’lie Ledger an appreciated visit.
