The/jourt heard some unimportant
cases appealed from the Magistrate’s
courts, and adjourned till Friday
morning.
Friday the case of Amos Ruther
ford vs. the Southern Itiilvvay Com
pany was taken up. J. C. Jefferies
and Mr. Haycsworth appeared for
Rutherford and Maj. D. R. Duncan
for the Railroad.
This was a suit for damages in the
sum of $1,000 damages for damages
for injuries received while in the em
ploy of the Company. The jury gave
a verdict for $.'»2.‘) for plaintiff.
The next case which consumed the
weekwasjHawkins,administratrix, vs.
the Southern Railroad Company for
killing Ed. Hawkins on February
22nd, 1897. It was pressed with
vigor on both sides and went to the
jury Saturday afternoon. The jury
remained out till a late hour and
failed to agree. The judge ordered
a mistrial.
A few minor matters were disposed of
when the court adjourned and jurors
were dismissed.

Whereas we, the Town Council of
Blacksburg, S. C., believe that the
existence of a disnensary at this
place is detrimental to the good mor
als and general welfare of the place,
And whereas, the people of the
town and surrounding country have
signed a petition to the State Board
of Control asking for the discontinu
ance of the dispensary at this place.
Be it resolved, That we, the Town
Council of Blacksburg, S. C., in ac
cordance with our opinion and the
wish of the people, respectfully ask
the Grand Jury of Cherokee county
to make, in its final presentment, a
request of a State Board of Control,
to discontinue the dispensary at this
place.

The Wave.
The intense cold wave which per
vaded the whole country for the past
few days has dealt out a liberal share
to Ibis section, i'p to Saturday the
weather was clear, but Saturday
morning the clouds were heavy and
before noon snow began to fall and
continued to do so until Sunday night
by which time it was five or six
inches deep. Monday morning the
mercury stood from four to seven de
grees, according to location, above
zero. The clouds soon began to pass
away and left the sun shining bright.
It gave a more cheerful outlook, but
only slightly tempered the brisk cold
wind that was coming outjfrom the
north.

I may say that I am not a stock
holder in this corporation, but I
heartily endorse the resolution of the
town council referring the question
to the voters cf the town as to
whether or not an exemption shall be
allowed, and think surely that the
voters will see lit and proper to vote
a large majority for the said exemp
tion. Our previous town councils
have been liberal heretofore in mak
ing such exemptions and I think
surely an exception should not be
made in this case, as this is the only
industry of its kind located south of
the Mason and Dixon line, and is but
a beginning of the glorious future
which wo predict that our town will
have by offering inducements to this
and other manufacturing enterprises
to locate in our midst.
In addition to the above facts,
what was said by a member in the
legislature a few days ago, namely:
That when the cotton mills were in
their infancy here, it was wise nec
essary, etc., that they should be ex
empt from taxation, as the then new
industry (to the South) must bo fos
tered, etc., applies with double forc«
to the beginning of the carpet manu
facturing here; for not only are con
ditions against it in not having the
raw material ready at hand, but
mu«t needs have it transported from
the north, with the railroads legisla
ting, so far as they are concerned,
against it, both us regards this and
the shipment of its manufactured
goods to all parts of the United
States, in favor of lafge northern
cities, such as New York and Phila
delphia, but uro obliged to compete
with those same cities whose strong
and powerful carpet manufactories
are doing their utmost to crush this
young and struggling industry.
Will not the people of Gaffney vote
to exempt it from municipal taxes,
and thus aid it to secure a firm foot
hold ; and in doing so cause capitalists,
and eni erprises to locate and establish
themselves among us?
