in this section of the state and his
time is always occcpied.
The county chain gang got two
recruits Saturday. One u white man
sent in hy the city court of Blacks
burg, and the other a negro boy from
the city court of (iatfiiey. They
have to put in thirty days each, im
proving the public highways.
The letting of contracts yesterday
for the building of the new Baptist
church and the large addition to he
made to Limestone College brought
a number ol prominent builders from
Charlotte, Spartanburg and other
places to the city yesterday.
Mr. J. (1. Galloway bus beard from
Mrs. Galloway since her arrival in
Ireland. Her many friends in GalT-
ney will be glad to bear that she had
a quick and pleasant voyage and that
she is enjoying herself finely among
her relatives in her old Irish home.
John C Fainter, one of Ghcrokc-e’s
best farmers was in the city Satur
day. Mr. Fainter says he made a
fairly good crop of wheat hut that it
was materially injured hy dry weath
er. He says cotton is doing fairly
well hut that the early planted corn
is nearly ruined.
Work on the county jail was sus
pended temporarily Saturday hy Con
tractor'Baker. Mr. Baker had had
the window frames made hy a factory-
in another city, and when they arri
ved they were not up to his mark, so
he rejected them and will have to
wait till he gets others made.
County Superintendent of Educa
tion McArthur, attended the State
Normal School at Rock Hill some
days last week in connection with
his official duties in the county. Mr.
McArthur is a life long educator, de
voted to his work, and will leave noth
ing undone that will advance the edu
cational interest of Cherokee.
Lieut. O. E. Surratt, of the 3rd
ITiited States Artillery, sailed on the
Sheridan some days ago from San
Francisco for Manila, hut owing to
some defect in tlie machinery of the
vessel it returned to San Francisco for
repairs and was expected to sail
again on the 23rd inst. Lieut. Sur
ratt has the best wishes of his many
friends in Cherokee who know they
will hear good accounts of him when
he gets on the firing line.
Sheriff Thomas sent a deputy to
Facolet Mills Wednesday morning
and arrested the young man sus
pected of passing the forged checks
here some time ago. He w as brought
to Gttlfiiey and placed in jail and on
Friday had a preliminary hearing be
fore Magistrate i'liillips. He resem
bled the check passer very much, but
the injuredjjpurtiefi here could not
positively identify him and Magis
trate I’hillips released him.

and saintly Rev. A. C. Dixon, of
Brooklyn New York, will preach in
his old home church in Shelby North
Carolina on Sunday July tub. And
in order that Mr. Dixon's many
admirers in Cherokee may have an
opporiunityj to hear him the South
Carolina and Georgia Extension Rail
road Company has agreed to run a
train over their road from Gaffney to
Shelby on that day.
Mr. Dixon’s great piety, profound
learning and eloquence, and being
wel! known to our people, assures a
full train from Gaffney.

crops grown on them this year, shown
the benefit of thorough preparation
of soil and general careful work.
Mr. Fetit’s crop ) itlded him a little
over twenty-two bushels of clean
wheat to one planted, and Mr. Blan
ton’s made him twenty-five bushels
to one planted.
These are object lesson that less
successful wheat growers might pro

citizen and Baptist minister of Cleve
land county, N. C , died at the resi
dence of his son, Mr. Joseph Jones,

had been in failing health for some
time and came to Giilfncy on a visit
to his sons, Messrs. Joseph and New-
