All honor th the Battle Ground women and men, fur the perfect arrangement for the celebration Saturday. The Union and Cherokee county Hughes were at the Battle Ground i Saturday. The same stock of Hugh- I es were there with Morgan 1 IS years I ago. Our over-the-river Cherokeeans were on the Battle Ground Saturday in good numbers. And just here j let us say that no part of the county has more cheerfully aided and ushs- ted in the preparation for the great celebraton than have our over-tbre- river fellow citizens. Cherokee county’s sturdy Whel- chell’s were on the Battle Ground Saturday, as full of integrity and manhood as were their ancestors flhen they stood on the same field with Morgan and consecrated it with their blood one hundred and eighteen years ago. We are requested by the Cowpens I Memorial Association to express its thanks and obligations to The Muni- i cipal Le ague of Gaffney for its libera! 1 contributions and earnest support of j ail measures of the Association which tended to secure ihe success of j the celebration on the battle ground Saturday. Supervisor Lipscomb closed a trade a few days ago with Mr. Charles Petty for land on which to build the county poor house. The tract con tains about seventy acres, is of good I quality, well timbered and adapted to the purpose for which it has been bought. It is located about two miles west of the city and we learn cost about $1,100. TALKING FOR GAFFNEY. How Om* of Our ('iti/.«*n* ToHloflt* Hro- tfr<*S*iV4*il«‘H.H. A citizen of Gullnoy was in a neigh boring town some days ago and while speaking of our town one gentleman | asked him to what cause he attribu ted the great success of Gallney. He replied: “To the progress!veneas of our merchants ; to the enterprise | of our citizens ; and the thrift of our i institutions, industries and manufac- j tories ’’ Our friend was asked to go ( more into detail, and lie gladly named [ over our progressive and prosperous | merchants, our churches, our schools ! and colleg. s, and our manufactories, i He told him that when any question arose which was of interest to the up-building and progress of the town | our people were almost a unit, and assured him that it was with a great | deal of pleasure that he Accounted such enterprises as the Lime Works; The Gaffney Carpet Manufacturing Company; The Gaffney Manufactur ing Company; The Victor Cotton Oil Company, etc., the last of which, though now only in its swaddling clothes, hut in the hands of its as tute and far-seeing manager, J. X. Lipscomb, will soon make itself felt as filling a long needed want, and be come a source of pride to our little city. He was glad to tel! him that there comes from a good source (which he was not at liberty to give him) infor mation that there w:il probably be planted in our town within the r ext few months certain enterprises that will eclipse in magnitude anything that we now have. He told him that in an election held here some weeks ago for the purpose of submitting to tiie voters the question as to whether or not the carpet mill should be ex empt from municipal taxes, the vo ters stood ten to one for exemption ; and that our town council had pas.- ed a general ordinance exempting all manufactories for five years from tuxes, and ordered an election to l e held on the .'list inst. for this ordi nance to be ratified by the people. In replying to his question ns to what the result of the election would be lie referred the enquirer to the history of the past as a sufficient an swer to his question ; and lie was told that our people hud always been friendly to manufactories, and that capitalists need not be afraid of pul ling their money here; that we ex pected to carry this election for prog ress and e. terprise by u larger major ity than we did the carpet mill elec- t ion. Our friend told him that we had as fine water from our new v.cll as the earth afforded; told him we had brave men and true; and last but not least, that our women were as pure and us beautiful as it has ever been man’s fort unate lot to see. That is the way to help build up a town. Talk about the good things it con tains and the good tilings we antiM- pat*. Gonzales, who honored Cherokee by being present at her celebration at the CowjAcns Battle Ground Saturday, left the city Satur day night for his home in Columbia. Mr. Gonzales was the guest of Mr. and Mis. Ld. H. DeCamp wldle in Gaffney. C. B. Sanders, a leading attorney of the Spartanburg bar, came over to the city yesterday on professional busim ss. Hon. Wm. Jefferies attended the celebration Saturday. A J. McUraw, of Grassy Bond, was in the city yesterday. E. R. Sapocb and Henderson Mar- tuin of Mount Baron were on the Battle Ground Saturday. R. J. Gambell, once a scdicol boy in Gaffney, but now a prominent business man in Belton, Anderson county, came over to the Cowpens celebration and spent somedajs in the city with friends. Capt. X. F. Walker of Cedar Springs attended the celebration on the Battle Ground. Maj. Lauson Erwin of THE SMOKER. CIO*. rU to the iutherford- celebration something ton came Saturday. Sunnny Humhries, of Byarsville, X. C., came to the city yesterday. Jack McKissick, was among his friends in the city Friday, and of course went to the Battle Ground. Mr. S. L. Hopper and family left this morning for Lenoir. X. C., where they go to open a summer hotel. Their place will he called the Com mercial Hotel anil those who stop with “Uncle Sam” anc may depend on having good to eat ail the time it it is to be had. M M. Fre man one of Cherokee’s foremost citizens was in the throng at the celebration. Dr. J. B. O. Landrum, the his- torian, attended the Battle Ground celebration and seemed to he enjoy ing the prucedings with a keen re lish. G. C. Herndon, a prominent citi zen of Cleveland county, X. C., made a busim ss trip to Uie city yesterday. Dr. B. B. Butler after attending the celebration Saturday remained in the city until yesterday. The Doctor expressed himself as pleased with his experience among us. He thinks Gaffney a good town. Misses Magraret and Vic Amos, of Spartanburg, viiited their sister, Mrs. R. C. Harratt, on Logan street, sev eral da\s the past week. Uncle Rial McKissick, of Union county, was on the Battle Ground Saturday, to again see the place where his ancesU-rs fought and to honor their memory. Mr. John A. Stroup, of Cherryvillf, X. C., was in the city Saturday with a load of Htroup Bro s. Bond Idly patent roller Hour, and while here paid The Ledger u pleasant visit. George Marlin came in to see The Ledger Friday. Mr. Martin took in the celebration. Maj. D. R. Duncan, o fSpartunburg, was ut the celebration Saturday. E. H Rridges came in to see The Ledger Friday while passing through the city on his way to the battle ground . J. H. McLane, of, Spartanburg, lately appointed U. S. deputy mar shal and assigned to duty in Chero kee county, arrived in the city yes terday. Rev.
