After another week of hard work the farmers came to town Saturday with tunned, faces and hands but with that cheerful appearance which results from a knowledge of duty faithfully performed. They spoke encouragingly of the growing wheat and oat crops and of their progress in working corn and cotton. Some re ported rain Friday night but most sections were needing it. Farmers have all the elements of independ ence in their own hand, and no farm ers realize the fact more fully or take advantage of them more quickly than do our farmers of Cherokee. Thomason, the genial, effi cient and gentlemanly agent of that road in this city and the manager of The Ledger. After spending two nights and a day prowling around over the cobble stones of Charleston they started back, home Thursday 1 foot-sore and weary, with soiled | linen and unkept hair and about four day’s growth of beard on their faces. Arriving in Camden about ore o'clock and having about three hours time they decided to go up town ai.d get dinner, and other re freshments in the shape of ginger ah* and sarsaparilla. Thomason had purchased a pair of slippers to wear and ns he limped up to the hotel i with those slippers on and his shoes under one arm w hile in Ills hand, he carried a bottle of ginger ale lie pre sented a sight that would excite the pity of anyone who had a heart in him. His companion was in no bet ter shape. He carried a grip swung across his shoulder, a bottle of sarsa parilla in one hand and a bundle in the other, while his hat was set hack on his head at an angle of forty-five degrees. As they sauntered up to the hotel office a sweet-face, eye-giassed creature of the fammine gender ten derly asked: “Gentlemen, have you any bag- gagcV” “No mam,” was the meek reply. “Well, then, I am sorry, but it Is necessary to pay in advance when you h'ive’no baggage.” “Certainly, certainly,” answered the travel stained re-unionists, and they went down in their jeans and protested as to which should pay for it. Finally the newspaper man let the railroad magnet pay for the din ner and they w r ere permitted to enter the dining room of the Workman Hotel. LIPSCOMB & BRO. Tliwniii* K. Ostfl'iiry Dt'iid. Mr. Thomas E. Gaffney, of this city, died Sunday the 11th inst., at his home on North Limestone stnet in his fifty-eighth year. At *the time of his death he was next to the oldest of the name now in this sec tion. Mr. Gaffney hud spent his entire life here, except when he was serving as a soldier in the Confederate army. His life was quiet and unob trusive and without evil deeds or thoughts towards any of his fellows. Ho leaves u wife and several chil dren among who are Mrs. John Thomas Ruppe and Mr. Mat Gaffney and many relatives and friends who I mourn because he is not. The services were conducted at the resideucd yesterday hy Rev. W. IL Hodges, of the First Methodist ; church, after which the remains were buried at Limestone cemetery in the presence of many friends and rela tives. The pall bearers were Messrs. A. i F.
