Nobody can build a town’s pros perity but its people. There will be many campers on the battle ground the night before tiie 27th. Come to Gaffney on the 2Gth so as to get an early start to the battle ground on the £7th. Prof. it. G. Davis will conduct a singing at Grassy Pond the third .Sunday in this month. The McGowan volunteers, of Spar tanburg, will ho at the Hattie Ground on the 27th of May. The railroad agents in GulTney sold one hundred and forty odd tickets to the reunion in Charleston. Remember that competent officers will be at the Hattie Ground on the 27th of May, who will preserve or der. The Hoard of Health expects strict compliance with its rule re quiring lime to he used on private premises. The railroads have promised cheap rates to Gaffney to those who attend the Cowpen’s celebration on the 27th. Governor Ellerbe is reported to he improving rapidly, lie is now said to he able to ride over his farm and to visit his neighbors. The fall sown oats are heading and will soon he ready for the scythe. Wheat is growing rapidly with pros pects of a good crop. Sergt. Clint Alexander, of Shelby, N. C., and late of the First North Carolina Volunteers, has accepted a position in Uullney and will he here some time. On next Sunday morning Pastor H. P. Robertson of the First Haptist church will preach on “The Lord’s | Supper.” At the evening service, the subject will he “Jesus.” Capt. J. H. Hell has been invited by the Ladies Memorial Association of Salem church, and bus consented to deliver the oration on Memorial day, the 20th of May. Miss Edna Sarrutt entertained a number of her friends a few evenings ago at a sociable given in~ honor of her charming young friend, Miss Mayme Humphries, of Eiberton, Ga. The Yorkville Enquirer in pub lishing a list of “our Confederate Dead,” meaning the Confederate dead of York county, has placed not only York hut the whole .State under obligations to it. The Cowpens Memorial Association is receiving assurances of the attend ances of many distinguished visitors on the 27th. Every preparation is being made in Gaffney for their entertainment while in the city and while on the battle ground. The volunteers from Cherokee county in the war with Spain are re quested t6 appear in a body at the Hattie Ground on the 27th of May, the ranking officer to have com mand. Sergeants A, M. Deal and Hurncfe Lipscomb will please take charge and induce their comrades to turn out. The Ledger has received from Mr. S. H. Hardwick, A. G. P. A , of the Southern Railway Company, a copy of “Confederate Memories” issued by that company fur distribution at the re-union in Charleston. It is a work worthy of the enterprising Southern; is a beautiful “Yrteran’u Souvenir,” awakening at once in their memories events and men of the glorious days of the Confederacy. A Card. Mr. Frank Withers, the gentle manly representative of The Stale, called to see The Lodger while in the city yesterday, R. S. Lipscomb made a business trip to Union Tuesday. Capt. J. J, Magness, of Grassy Rond, was in the city Tuesday on business. B. E. Wilkins, of Cowpens, was in the city Tuesday. Josiah Blanton is spending the week with relatives in Blacksburg. H. J. Sarratt, of this county, who has just returned from Cuba, where he has been serving in the First N. C., Volunteers, paid Tho Ledger a visit Tuesday. Jack’s many frieqds in Cherokee are proud of his honor able service and his safe return. M. C. Lipscomb, of White Plains, and who, propably, cultivates more land than any planter in Cherokee county, came over to the city Tues day afternoon. Forest Austell, of Earls, N. C., came over to Gaffney Tuesday after noon. L. Baker went to Spartanburg Wednesday night on business. Jesse K. Burton was among his many friends in the city Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. John fcpears, of Kel- ton, Union county, are in the city the guests of Capt. and Mrs. J. C. Otts on Victoria Avenue. Mr. Spears is one of Kelton’s most suc cessful and progressive business men. D. D. Ison bower, the principle moulder in the Gaffney Machine Shops, was called to his home in Hickory, N. 0., Wednesday on ac count of the serious illness of Lis wife. Mr. and Mrs. J. I). Jones and children went to Blacksburg yes terday to visit relatives. J.C. Hayden, of Blacksburg, was on a business trip to the city Wed nesday. J. E. Foster, a prominent Chero- keean of Govvdeyville, was among his friends in the city Wednesday. C. A. Wood and A. 0. Pridmore, now in business at Concord, N. C., are in the city. John Thomas Ruppe, of Maud, was among ids friends in the city Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Darwin, and their iilile son, Master Bennie, of Kings Creek, spent Tuesday night in the city with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Robinson are spending sometime in the city with relatives. . M. C. The piuliminary investiga'.lon in the cdL>o of H e {stale against Calvin Tale and Jim Tate, charged with burning the stables and outhouses of Mr. Taylor Petty a few days ago, was continued in Magistrate Phillip's court on yesterday. Both parties were recommitted to jail to await the next term of court. As to Citi. Tate, the evidence was circumstantial, but the magistrate thought it sufficiently strong to war rant him in binding him over. The offence is a very serious one and no doubt the case will attract much attention when it comes up for trial. J. C. Jefferies appeared for the de fendant, Cal. Tate, while the prose cution was represented by Henry K. Osborne, of the firm of Butler A Osborne. Cal and Jim Tate are both colored. Cal has figured before almost every court since Cherokee wasorganied; so much so that the writer lias more than once heard hoys trying to imitate Solicitor Henry’s piercing voice when he would call, “Cal Tate.” The f ’oui’iTf Tonight. At Hie earnest solicitation of Hie members of tho Fust Baptist church, Rev. Arthur Crane, who so earnestly and with auch good results labored for Hie Master’s cause among the Gaffney people a short time ago, lias consented to come among them again and remain for one more week. He will be here on the lithofJune and will remain for only one week. Mr. Crane made many strong friends while here and impressed all who heard him with his earnest ap peals. He had come in from his suburban home to spend the day with his son-in-law’, Prof. \V. L. Johnson.
